“We are very afraid…” Passengers recount horror of crash as Kanchenjunga Express arrives at Sealdah

The Kanchenjunga Express, which met with a tragic accident near Rangapani Station in Darjeeling on June 17, arrived at Sealdah railway station on June 18 after the completion of restoration work. The accident claimed eight lives and left around 25 injured. Medical booth and help desk were established in Sealdah station, along with transport arrangements for all the incoming passengers. Few victims who sustained injuries are even finding it difficult to walk properly. Kolkata Mayor Firhad Hakim interacted with the survivors, assisting them with the special transport services organized to ensure they reached their destinations safely.
Speaking of the horror that the passengers witnessed, one of the onboarders said, “I was in S7 when this accident took place...We are very afraid after this accident...My parents are also worried...”
Another one said, “Within half an hour of boarding the train, it met with accident.” Speaking about the situation in Sealdah station post arrival of the train, DRM Sealdah, Deepak Nigam said, “We have asked about the condition of the passengers from them...The Doctors team and RPF team are also on the spot. We have ambulances also on standby, if needed we will use them...Medical booths are also here to guide the passengers...”
Speaking about the arrangements for the passengers and about the incident, CPRO Eastern Railway, Kaushik Mitra said, “We have arranged doctors, food and ambulance. We have arranged more than 10 beds also...Prima Facie seems that the Goods train driver overshot the signal...”
