      Purrete
Strong candidate for ‘Most Ridiculous Comment on TH-cam’.
To compare the music of the two composers in the manner you have attempted to do shows that your understanding of either one is as limited as your knowledge of the other.
Corelli’s Opus 5 violin sonatas are arguably the greatest set of such sonatas ever composed; his Opus 6 concerti grossi, along with Handel’s Opus 6, are the two greatest sets of Baroque string concerti grossi.
In short, your comment is nonsense.

    • @Purrete
      @Purrete 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

@@dbertobis Jacob H, Elaine Blackhurst, how can all of you be so mistaken? The assessments of a grand or a mediocre work of music (or any other art expression) are matter of simple emotions and taste but not scientifically measurable, rather people with a deep knowledge, very few indeed, may be able to say if there's genius in it because of the uniqueness, originality, novelty and unsurpassed complexity of the notes in the score. BTW, those that give an opinion must be widely acknowledged as talented and unique in their field. If Picasso would've said that Renoir was a mediocre painter (which he never said) probably many would've taken it as true.
In our case nobody in the last 350 years said that "Corelli's violin sonatas or concerti grossi are the greatest ever written" specially if our respected Elaine doesn't give 1 single evidence of such an opinion. In the Baroque period Corelli, together with Scarlatti and Gabrielli were indeed fore-riders of what short time later would become the Classical period or most influential and rich period in the history of music. That Corelli was a great there's no doubt.
I'm dismissing the 4 words of DBERTOBIS because they are thrown out straight from the belly and not thought out seriously.

I would actually disagree with almost every word of your contribution here, some of which is nonsense - your claim that Corelli, Scarlatti and Gabrielli being fore-riders of the Classical period, as just one example.
As you did not read my original comment properly, I will not prolong this debate - for example, you missed out the word ‘arguably’ from my comment about Corelli’s Opus 5/6 and therefore in effect completely mis-quoted me for your own purposes.

it was the 80s...i was very much into punk rock at the time having just spent several years exploring prog rock and the likes of poets like bowie and lou reed....and really interested in most anything the radio was keeping from us. i was in a used cd store and found a cd with no inner-sleeve/artwork called Concerti Grosso Op.6 by Corelli. of course i knew what classical music was and heard Beethoven and Bach most notably in Stanley Kubrick's movies. However bringing this cd home which i paid 50 cents for was really a turning point for me. i still have that cd now amongst a library of at least 500 classical cds and it still reigns as one of my fave pieces ever. this version is a treat for which i must thank you....so indeed thank you very much for sharing..

Michael Bellamy authentic tuning varied from region to region. Don’t think it ever went as low as 400Hz. In Budapest was until even very recently actually higher at 442. A reasonable estimate in fluctuation would be between 430 and 444. The reason varied widely, even to the particular tuning fork of the local harpsichordist passing hands down the generations. There were no exact tools those days.

Pitches varied from 392 Hz to 415 Hz and organs were pitched higher (Chorton 466 Hz-470 Hz) and treated as transposing instruments by J S Bach in some of his scores.. Leipzig in Bach's time was circa 420 Hz although some scholars believe it was closer to A=415 Hz.
Pitch inflation occurred in some areas of the German States that exceed 500 Hz, which some of the singers complained of injury to their voices.. Modern standardised pitch is A=440, and is ignored more often than followed. From the early 18th century, pitch could be also controlled with the use of tuning forks (invented in 1711) by a trumpet player after a permanent injury (split lip) took up the lute and required a reliable reference., although again there was variation. For example, a tuning fork associated with Handel, dating from 1740, is pitched at A = 422.5 Hz, while a later one from 1780 is pitched at A = 409 Hz, about a quarter-tone lower.A tuning fork that belonged to Ludwig van Beethoven around 1800, now in the British Library, is pitched at A = 455.4 Hz, well over a half-tone higher. An 1815 tuning fork from the Dresden opera house gives A = 423.2 Hz, while an 1826 fork from the same opera house gives A = 435 Hz. At La Scala in Milan, the A above middle C rose as high as 451 Hz
British attempts at standardisation in the 19th century gave rise to the old philharmonic pitch standard of about A = 452 Hz (different sources quote slightly replaced in 1896 by the considerably "deflated" new philharmonic pitch at A = 439 Hz.
New York Philharmonic and orchestras in Denmark, France, Hungary, Italy, Norway and Switzerland use A = 442 Hz. Nearly all modern symphony orchestras in Germany and Austria and many in other countries in continental Europe (such as Russia, Sweden and Spain) tune to A = 443 Hz, some orchestras like the Berlin Philharmonic lowered their highest previous standard (445 Hz) to likewise use a slightly lower pitch (443 Hz)
The general trend since the middle of the 20th century has been for standard pitch to rise, though it has been rising far more slowly than it has in the past.
And you can blame it on the conductors who believe string players parts sound more brilliant at higher than 440 Hz standard pitch.

The amount of incredible artistic talent produced during the Baroque period is so staggering that one might be tempted to believe it was a Providential occurrence rather than mere happenstance.
This is especially true in music. A truly incredible number of first-rate composers flourished at that time - so much so that those who are not particularly knowledgeable about classical music might not even have heard of the great Arcangelo Corelli (unfortunately for them).
In any field of endeavor, however, there is only so much room at The Top. Corelli - born just three years after Bach, Handel and Domenico Scarlatti (stiff competition indeed, in addition to a plethora of other stellar composers ) - nonetheless remains very near the top of the classical music summit after 300+ years. His compositions have more than survived the most significant criterion of Greatness - The Test of Time.

I was very fortunate to see Mr. Bohdan Warchal play with his Slovak Chamber Orchestra while he was still alive, although an old gentleman at that time. He got the orchestra together in 1960 and they toured the whole world until his death in 2000. Today the orchestra is led by his son, also named Bohdan.

great painting depicting instruments - it is interesting how the playing style has changed - the cellist is holding the bow like one would with the contrabass (large upright bass fiddle), and the bows have been redesigned since, although you can still get some in that style.

I personally met Mr. Bohdan Warchal. His Slovak Chamber Orchestra (SKO) was the real pride of Slovakia. He was a heart guy, but he was just as strong to himself as he did to the chamber orchestra and to his students at the Music Academy. Some afraid of him :) . His son BW junior is welknown producer of violin strings WARCHAL brand.

Ok, I already commented on this before I think, but I have to say, every time that I press "play" on this upload, my heart is warm. I LOVE the sound of strings on vinyl, and for this particular type of music, I think that it actually makes the mid-range sound better, than most modern mixes are made to sound. I agree it is not for every genre/sound, but this recording makes me so happy.

I get what you mean, sometimes pieces are hard to listen to cause often the track isn’t compressed enough to where the bass is too low and the treble is too high as to where it’s hard to listen to.
