Best-known for his Southern Reach trilogy, VanderMeer is a three-time World Fantasy Award winner as well as a teacher, publisher, and frequent anthologist. His latest vision of the future finds a ruined city where people survive by scavenging. Once dominated by the Company, a biotech firm, the city is now menaced by a giant, flying bear, the maddened creation of the Company’s cruelty and failed experiments. But when Rachel finds a tiny green lump clinging to the bear, she falls under its spell. Naming it Borne, she nurtures it and teaches it to talk, glimpsing in its innocence an antidote to the devastation around her. But the Company may still be in operation and as Borne grows, this creature threatens the city’s precarious balance of power.
VanderMeer is in conversation with the writer Ann VanderMeer, his wife and frequent collaborator on anthologies including Sisters of the Revolution

Borne is such a shockingly imaginative novel. I revisit it periodically, it holds up really well on repeated readings.

Gratitude for sharing, I am loving Wonderbook! I started it in July after finishing Jessica Brody’s Save The Cat Writes a Novel. When we are able to have such a discussion, please have both authors back to cogitate on Novelcraft!

Who were the authors that they mentioned?

Karin Tidbek is the Swedish author that Ann mentioned along with her novel Amatka. Then Jeff named the Catalan author Mercè Rodoreda and the American author Kai Ashante Wilson. I had to listen to that part several times to make out the names. All of them have pages on Wikpedia and are also listed on Goodreads if you want to check them out.
