  • The book of Genesis is foundational to the rest of the Scriptures. What a person believes about creation influences their view of the entire Bible. In this verse by verse examination of Genesis chapter 1 we'll uncover the origins of the universe and gain a greater appreciation of God's power, wisdom and care. Although many questions about the specifics of creation remain unanswered, we can rest assured that "In the beginning God."
    This teaching is from our series Genesis - 2009 with Skip Heitzig from Calvary Church.

    I have been so happy to hear your discussion tonight. Genesis is such an exciting book especially about the creation of all things. I'm a retired 65 year old lady. I spend most of my time rock hounding for beautiful rocks. I also hunt fossils. I don't take sides on how old they are I don't really care to be honest. I love them because they are part of God's creation. Each one I find are mostly sea creatures. They are a piece of the Earth's history proof there is a Creater he is a Mighty God with a funny sense of humor. He had the zoologists going with the Duck Billed Platypus 😆. Loved your explanation looking forward to next week with great anticipation.

    Thanks Pastor Skip. I`m glad you spent time on Genesis 1:1. It is one of the most important verses in the Bible, because like you said, if you accept it as true then there's no reason to doubt any other verse of scripture - whether it be parting the Red Sea, talking donkeys, or Christ raising Lazarus from the dead. God is the Grand Author of all scientific laws and is able to manipulate atoms and molecules and energy and even time at will.. When it comes to the origin of the universe, there's really only 2 possibilities - either the universe came into existence from nothing (and there's a well known American theoretical physicist who has actually written a book, called "A universe from nothing") or God created the universe from nothing. Many years ago during a university lecture, I asked the author of the aforementioned book if he was ready to proclaim himself to the audience as just a computer made of meat and a man without a soul. He was taken aback and just sort of chuckled and moved on to the next question without answering. Many point to DNA in all living creatures as proof that evolution is true, but it actually just shows the presence of the Common Designer who created the vast diversity of creatures we see by arranging DNA base pairs in different numbers, sequences, and chromosomes. For many of these scientists profession of belief in God would mean ridicule from their peers and not being able to publish in "prestigious" scientific journals. But then sometimes malignant cancer comes along and they chuck their pride because they realize the letters after their name are insignificant. The fact is you could take a dead housefly in a jar to the UN. And if the fate of the world depended on the UN bringing the greatest scientists in the world together to raise the dead fly back to life...the world would perish. Prideful humans trying to exalt their puny brains above the throne of Almighty God!

    I believe in a young Earth and that the six days of creation are literal 24-hour days. To believe otherwise is to superimpose material into the text that is not present. "When the plain sense of Scripture makes common sense, seek no other sense; therefore, take every word at its primary, ordinary, usual, literal meaning unless the facts of the immediate context, studied in the light of related passages and axiomatic and fundamental truths indicate clearly otherwise" (Dr. David L. Cooper)

    • @GeoffBosco
      @GeoffBosco 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      “Earth” you guys keep using that word as if the author of Genesis 1 even remotely had the conceptual category of planet in his worldview. The Hebrew word used there is “erets” which simply means "the land”.
      “”
      What I am not saying is that people don’t superimpose material into the text…I’m saying it’s nearly impossible to not do that at any level since we are so far removed from the cultural context which it was written. The idea that you can simply hold a young earth position to not be guilty of this is, frankly, laughable.

    If God is light and the earth was void and dark. Wouldnt that mean that darkness was from Satan until God reformed it. He says he doesnt know what happened between verse one and two but God is light and in Ezekiel 28 12 it explains satan was in eden which we know that but im saying do we really not know that the darkness and chaos a void would bring is from Satan

    When God finished the creation he said it was very good....why then did he need to create the garden of eden for adam and eve to live in?

    • @CalvaryABQ
      @CalvaryABQ  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello @Fabio, while there are several ways to approach the Garden of Eden it seems that one reason that seems to be certain as to why God created the Garden of Eden was to a) give Adam and Eve their first place to call home, and b) to provide them the blessing of work.
      In Genesis chapter 2 we learn in verse 5 "...and there was no man to till the ground;" and in verse 6 "but a mist went up from the earth and watered the whole face of the ground." Here we have God introducing the concept of work for the first time in which man is the one performing the work. In verses 8-9 we learn "The Lord God planted a garden eastward in Eden, and there He put the man whom He had formed. And out of the ground the Lord God made every tree grow that is pleasant to the sight and good for food. The tree of life was also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil." Perhaps in addition to the concept of the blessing of work and work being a means of living out our purpose God also made it to show that he provides and it is our choice to choose Him everyday.
      Hope this helps!

    Probably the whole of Genesis ch.1 is a loanword from an ancient Sumerian praise hymn to creation (a priestly hymn related to the fertility calendar), inserted in book of "Genesis", only after the return of the Jews from the Babylonian captivity, carried out by the scribe Ezra. It seems that the Sumerians counted the year as 6 double (solar-lunar) months of 60 days each, which seems to be the basis of the text of Gen. ch.1 When the first (solar) half of the double 60-day month (~ 30.4 Sun days) ended, "evening" came. And when the second (lunar part of ~ 29.5 days) passed - the "morning" of the new solar-lunar (60-day) double month (time period) came. It is the expression "and there was evening and there was morning" (see Genesis 1: 5,8,13,19,23,31) that reveals exactly this very specific way of counting the Sumerian year (6x60 days). The first double month began on December 22 - "Let there be light!" - in the oldest myths it is always the day of the Winter Solstice. After 60 days, the second double (solar-lunar 60-day) month came - characterized by an ebb of the waters, during which drought appeared. After another 60 days - the new crop emerged - on trees and all kinds of seed-bearing grasses. After another 60 days, summer came - associated with the largest religious cults of worship to the two (large and small) celestial luminaries. After another 60 days in Sumer came the time when fish and birds multiplied. Finally, the last 6th part was devoted to the fertility of animals and the authority given to man by the creators over all creation. Most likely, the scribe Ezra plagiarized and crafty adapted this ancient Sumerian hymn as a priestly (badly molded) justification for the requirement for the Jews (after the captivity) to observe the Sabbath - the seventh day, as a rest (allegedly since the time of creation).

    Its very simple, the Earth is around 6 to 10 thousand years old. God made everything including man at age. The stars and their light, animals, plants all made at the age of old and young. One question:
    Gen 1:27 "So God created man in His own image ... male and female He created them."
    Gen 2:21 "And the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam"
    Gen 2:22 "And the rib or part of his side which the Lord God had taken from the man He built up and made into a woman..."
    Is there a conflict in the timing in the creation of women?

    • @CalvaryABQ
      @CalvaryABQ  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No, the Lord first created Adam then Eve, both made in his image. 1:27 is more like an epilogue of what's to come in the Lord's creation of man.

    • @jannaswanson271
      @jannaswanson271 ปีที่แล้ว

      Or.....He created mankind and gave them all of the trees to eat from with no restrictions and had them fill the Earth. THEN He created Adam and Eve, gave them the restriction about the Tree of Life and put them in the Garden. When Cain killed Able and was exiled he thought anyone who would find him would kill him. Both he and God knew there were other people on the Earth or that conversation would have been silly. God always had a Chosen People. For a time that was Israel and now some Gentiles have been grafted in. The Bible says Eve is the mother of all Living. Living could be understood as the ones who choose life, to walk in the way of God. Romans 9 bears this out with, "What if God, intending to show His wrath and make His power known, bore with great patience the vessels of His wrath, prepared for destruction? What if He did this to make the riches of His glory known to the vessels of His mercy, whom He prepared in advance for glory- including us, whom He has called not only from the Jews, but also from the Gentiles?"

    I enjoyed a lot of this interpretation, however I don’t understand why he would start off by mentioning that the Bible isn’t a biology book and then he began addressing things about evolution, carbon based life forms, literal 24 hours etc. Very clearly our modern cosmological understanding of the order of the universe was being imposed on the text which the authors were not privy to, and honestly, forces us to be dogmatic.
    Also: what’s the point in claiming dinosaurs and humans existed at the same time? It’s irrelevant to the text and according to current evidence, just not true…

      Hey Abdool. Unlike the Quran, the Bible has been translated into many languages so that ordinary people don't have to learn Hebrew and Aramaic and Greek in order to read it. The variations from translation to translation are not that significant, so you basically get the same general message regardless of translation. Some are more literal, others pay more attention the whole ideas and then try to capture the meaning of that idea in idioms that are familiar to the culture into which it is being translated. That being said, there are languages (besides English) in which you only have one or two translations. But if you want to read the Bible in English, any of the following should help: ESV, NASB, RSV, NET. KJV won't be as accessible because it's old (Shakespeare's) English. So it will feel archaic and difficult to follow. Hope this helps.

    Genesis 1 says the Earth and day/night was created before the sun, moon and stars. God said He hung the sun, moon and stars within the firmament (now "translated" as sky or expanse) which makes no sense because the firmament divides the waters above from the waters below. That means it is solid. Man says the sun shines on the moon. God says the moon is a light. The Bible says over and over that the Earth does not move. 1 Chronicles 16:30, Psalm 33:8-9, Psalm 93:1, Psalm 96:10, Psalm 104:5, Isaiah 14:7, Zechariah 1:12, I Samuel 2:8
    Man says we are hurdling through "space" at a curious 66,600 mph. The Bible NEVER supports the spinning ball/endless space theory. They say it has been "proved" but actually their proof is that they say so. Believe God, not man. Have faith in God, not man.

    In the Beginning Yahweh Elohim created the heavens and the Earth.
    Do not add to or REMOVE from the word.
    The 3rd commandment originally translated ( Otiot first Aramaic Hebrew)
    states to NOT let his NAME come to nothing.
    ( This means with the use of titles or false names )
    Jeremiah 6:16
    Thus says the YHWH Elohim: “Stand by the roads, and look,
    and ask for the ancient paths, where the good way is;
    and walk in it, and find rest for your souls.
    But they said, ‘We will not walk in it.’
    Like you said 'This is Foundational A man built his house on sand ."
