Beta was my overall favourite format & of those machines, I always found Sony models to be the most solidly made, though they did have their faults, many of which I’ve watched you fix. I worked for Dixons/Currys for many years & I seem to remember we had more Sanyo returns but the price & quantity sold might have had a bearing. I have a collection of vintage recorders, representing most of the main formats, some working (by varying degrees) & some only useful as interesting “ornaments”. I play the working ones regularly through my Grundig C7100 22” Supercolor CRT TV. Fascinated by your posts. Rob
Sounds like you have quite a collection there. I do agree with the Sony build quality and just the joy in using the machines. Can you remember what the main fault with the returned Sanyo were back in the day? Really glad you like the video.
@@MrBetaByte if I remember rightly, it was chewing tapes that was the main cause. I’d always assumed that it was caused by lacing & unlacing more often than the Sony equivalents did. We did sell an awful lot though, as I said, so maybe that just added to the impression that they were less reliable. Generally speaking, I usually found that Sony models ran for longer before they exhibited faults, meaning their warranty had expired by the time they started to fail. At least the Sanyos went wrong fairly early on & were exchanged. Often the customers then paid the extra for a Sony one, as I recall. Keep up the great work, your videos are always informative & entertaining. I love the fact you leave your mistakes in as well.
@@MrBetaByte yes & the seller was so helpful. Did a full demonstration & gave me his beta tapes, which I wasn’t expecting. Still have to clean the head’s & tape path, looking forward to finding out what’s on the tapes.
A lovely NX100! I´m still waiting for one to add to my little collection. They seem to be very rare here in Europe - at least in decent shape and with all doors intact.
It really is! Would be great to see some machines from your collection - I'm making up a video to release in the future of viewers machines and collections and would love to feature yours if you'd be happy to? If you are, drop me an email to mrbetabyte@gmail.com and we'll take it from there.
I didn't know this was a rare model. Hopefully I've still got mine in storage and it wasn't one that ended up in a skip when I had a big clearout around 2007/2008. I didn't spot it when I moved stuff between storage units back in 2020, but some things were boxed up so it might be in one of them. I think it had a servo fault, or maybe just a bad tracking control as it was very difficult to get the tracking to work correctly.
I'm keeping my fingers crossed it's still safe. The tracking controls are quite weak and this NX100 did have a dirty control causing apparent tracking/ servo issues but it soon cleaned up especially with the help of some contact cleaner. I do really like these machines - simple but do the job well.
Hi, have you ever worked on a Sanyo M50? I acquired one a few months ago, I have only tested power so far and the clock lights up nicely but will not power on :( but something I'm looking forward to investigating :) love betamax machines :)
Not worked on an M50; only the M40 which probably is very similar. More than likely it'll have the same issue my NX100 had but would be very interested to know what you find with it once you've investigated.
@MrBetaByte hi, well got it working and the fault was that good old stk reg :) have a beautiful picture but unfortunately no hifi sound, did try a quick recording with a stereo input but as soon as I pressed play the hifi light goes out :( not sure if it's the hifi heads or something in the hifi circuitry. The internals of this seem almost identical to the m40. Would appreciate any insights you might have on the hifi issue :)
Colin has the manual available if you contact him via his website: www.colin99.co.uk/extras/reelidler/how_to_service_a_sanyo_beta.htm - scroll right down to the bottom of the page and you'll see it there. It is just a scanned manual to individual JPGs but it is all there. Yes, VNR and sharpness are not options on the NX100.

Incidentally I purchased the Toshiba V8600B that you featured on your recent eBay review & added it to my working collection.

Oh wow - did it turn out to be a good machine? I guess so. Main issue is belts and head wear.

I didn't find a free Circuit Diagram (9$50+), but a Product Description that makes Me assume that VNR and Sharpness were dispensed with here.
