Across fifty states of mind I didn't feel inclined You waited yesterday I didn't come your way Now time is moving on I know it won't be long Till I'm shuffling away With nothing more to say When I'm printed on your wall My face won't change at all The smile beneath my hair Hangs lifeless in the air Like a net in water I'm running through it all And I'm shuffling away With nothing more to say It's been preying on my mind And now I'm just resigned You smile for yesterday I think I'm in the way You seem concerned And say I should slow down But how can I see the stars If my feet are on the ground?
It's Tuesday, June 13th 2000 and I'm driving home from (mechanical engineering) school where I've just aced a test, listening to a mix tape I made. Trying to overtake a huge truck I realize I won't make it, hit the brakes, the wheels lock, i release the brakes with wheels pointing right, they unlock and the car turns violently to the right and out of the road, the car falls into a pit and start rolling. After it rolls 3-4-5 times, I don't know, it lands upside down, I 'm hanging upside down from the safety belt, but the stereo it still playing. I hear the lyrics "you seem concerned and say I should slow down but how can I see stars if my feet are on the ground". I saw some stars alright.. RIDE are THE best band of the 90s.
Love this song and this album! Criminally underrated band. Along with MBV, Lush and Suede, Ride was constantly in my playlist rotation in the early 90s. Saw them twice...at the Roxy on the "Nowhere" tour and at the Hollywood Palace on the "Going Blank Again" tour. Both were great shows.
It’s 25th February the world is slowly falling apart with news of the war in Ukraine and stuck here in hk with no end in sight to the pandemic, I revisited listening to this band a little over a few weeks ago and oh boy the memories it brought me back. I started listening to rock and metal earlier on in my teenage years but never really appreciated it until the last two threee years when I really started diggin in to music I went out today at noon for a run with a playlist that had ride right in the middle of my one hour and something list and I listened to this song thrice over my 10 k run It made me run faster I was absorbing all the beats to the beautiful song and was so glad to have stumbled upon this good piece of music and to have finally revisited this again recently when I’ve started appreciating all the good songs so much more The lyrics just perfect ❤️ thanks for the beautiful track
Always thought this should have been the immediate follow-up to ‘Leave Them All Behind’ because for me, ‘Twisterella’, no matter how good, was vastly different and, at the time of release, was lost on many fans of Ride’s earlier eps.
@@jamesoncroft2980 weird, I think this album has a uniquely great flow that works from beginning to end. I believe it totally qualifies as a creative masterpiece.
So does the line "Cool your boots, man" uttered twice in the last minute of the song. The opening line is said by Marwood (the 'I' character), and the title line is uttered by Danny the drug dealer. Headhunter to his friends. Headhunter to everybody: he doesn't have any friends.
there are perfectly normal and nice guitar pop songs.....and then there are normal and nice guitar pop songs with BASS AND DRUMS AND PRODUCTION like this.
Fuck me. 1997, a gang of us expats are driving from Sydney to Canberra, 2 of us adored this album, so we became stereo nazis and put it on repeat. By journey's end we has converted 4 others. We were also drinking heavily :-)
Subject to misguided teenage loathing on my part, I hated 'em, Loved the Manic Street Preachers but this is fucking brilliant! Lyrics are acutely well observed too, wish the author every happiness Across fifty states of mind I didn't feel inclined You waited yesterday I didn't come your way Now time is moving on I know it won't be long Till I'm shuffling away With nothing more to say When I'm printed on your wall My face won't change at all The smile beneath my hair Hangs lifeless in the air Like a net in water I'm running through it all And I'm shuffling away With nothing more to say It's been preying on my mind And now I'm just resigned You smile for yesterday I think I'm in the way You seem concerned And say I should slow down But how can I see the stars If my feet are on the ground?
El baterista le pega como si quisiera destruir la batería, todos tocan súper firme en cada uno de sus instrumentos, se puede sentir esa presencia de cada uno...
I had never got around to reading any of the Narnia books, but then in my first year of teaching I read The Lion The Witch and the Wardrobe when preparing a unit of work on it. At the same time GBA had just come out, and I was giving it its first playthrough while reading LWW. The section here from 1.43 and especially from 2.07 meshed magically with the sequence where Aslan shows Peter Cair Paravel in the distance "shining like a star on the sea". Two ideas forever bonded in my imagination. Still a golden track from a wonderful album.
LADIES AND GENTELEMAN THIS IS THE BEST INDIE GROUP EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!! NO BAD SONG TILL THEIR REAL INDIE PERIOD ( GOING BLANK AGAIN ALBUM0 ALL SONGS GREAT NOT EVEN ONE MEDIOCRE
Agree with most of the comnents below. Obviously Nowhere was THE album but this has some great tunes. I dislike the cover though. I always have it turned over.
I think but could well be wrong that the song is Withnail's all encompassing apology to I, finally heartfelt. It posits a situation where Withnail did find fame and was then at a remove from his friend ' printed on your wall'.... I don't know that's how I read it, fuck it it's just a great piece of music
Across fifty states of mind
I didn't feel inclined
You waited yesterday
I didn't come your way
Now time is moving on
I know it won't be long
Till I'm shuffling away
With nothing more to say
When I'm printed on your wall
My face won't change at all
The smile beneath my hair
Hangs lifeless in the air
Like a net in water
I'm running through it all
And I'm shuffling away
With nothing more to say
It's been preying on my mind
And now I'm just resigned
You smile for yesterday
I think I'm in the way
You seem concerned
And say I should slow down
But how can I see the stars
If my feet are on the ground?
This band, song and album STILL sound so great. RIDE are a gift from the stars.
the greatest band on the planet, sampling one of the greatest films ever made, what could be better.
The last 3 minutes of this are indie guitar heaven with the best drumming ever
Yes Indeed
Glad someone else caught this cause that outro drumming always moves me
Da hast du vollkommen recht, the best
I removed the track from the album. Leave Them All Behind was not just a song but a command. Only good song on there.

Wow.
Woah
I don't know you, I've never met you, but I am really glad you survived.👍
Darn. I was hoping the mix tape had said, ”even a stopped clock..."
Andy Bell's favorite Ride song is mine as well 🙃
Love this song and this album!
I saw both the same shows!
Nice to see someone who loves MBV and Suede!!! Not a huge fan of Ride but their shoegaze-ish records are quite good
Did you ever listen to The House Of Love as well?
oh man this song is just incredible
Love the guitar effects used on this one.
Absolutely stunning. Pure genius. Full stop.
Agreed.
The drums in this song are out of this world
in my very, very humble opinion: their best tune
yep, top 3 without doubt.
ONE of their best
Damn straight!!
the ending drums must have influence many drummers.
the ending drums must have influence many drummers.
Cant believe the abysmally low views on RIDE songs. God, the world is missing out on some fantastic tunes.
I was a bit busy earning a living and raising a family when Ride's star rode, but this song takes me right back to my teenage years emotionally
Glorious song. Amazing drums.

agreed, this album is full of fantastic songs but they don’t flow into each other very well.

@@sunshaped If you said that in regards to Nowhere, I’d agree.
Manchester Polly 1991?2 Greystoke halls of res. This was my crutch. So happy to hear it again. Beautiful times. :)
Those drums!
+Dave Caughley that bass.x
is it a banger? how many drops?
Loz - best drummer ever
Amazing album
The drums.. the drums.. THE DRUMS
Fun piece of trivia: the opening piece of dialogue comes from the 1987 film ‘Withnail and I’
as does the title
And is also featured in Orbital - Planet of the Apes (1993)
So does the line "Cool your boots, man" uttered twice in the last minute of the song. The opening line is said by Marwood (the 'I' character), and the title line is uttered by Danny the drug dealer. Headhunter to his friends. Headhunter to everybody: he doesn't have any friends.
what a tune this is..blows my mind
q temasooooo. la furia y melancolía del largo final es de los mejorcito del disco, mucha polenta, recomendadísimo

I would definitely marry that final bass line if I could
this and Sennen two my favs, so f'kin beautiful
Their best
There were not enough Rickenbackers and Fender Jazzmasters to go around when Ride recorded this.
This track is one of my best ever. And I am 56 😂
