Jeep Wrangler TJ One Year Review Pros and Cons Compared To Newer Jeep Wranglers A Buyers Guide

  • I have wanted an offroad vehicle for a while and when we made Arizona our home base this became the perfect time to purchase one as we have about six off road areas within a 30 mile radius of our home.
    I first started looking at side by sides, but quickly realized that they are very expensive, they run about the same price of a brand new two door Jeep and they don’t have A/C which I felt was a must have for the Arizona desert.
    So, I started looking at Jeeps as they have always been a vehicle I wished to own. I quickly started looking at Jeep TJ’s which are Jeep Wranglers made from 1997 to 2006 mainly because of price, I feel the Jeep TJ’s are the best bang for the buck Jeeps. I did look at Jeep YJ’s for a bit, they were made from 1987 to 1996, but I had a difficult time finding one that had Air conditioning, so I ruled them out.
    So I mentioned price was a concern when shopping for a Jeep, but what I also found beneficial about the TJ compared to newer Jeeps was its size and weight. The Jeep TJ is much narrower than the newer Jeeps, making it perfect to fit down tight trails and the fact that it weighs 700 lbs less than a new Jeep made it ideal to tow behind our RV. This is a great advantage of a Jeep TJ that a newer Jeep will never have.
    I knew whatever model Jeep I would buy, I was going to mod it out the way I wanted which meant I was going to be adding weight to the Jeep and at a stock weight of 3200 lbs the TJ was a good starting point compared to a new Jeep that weighs over 3900 lbs.
    And at a 10,000 price tag I felt this Jeep was well worth the price. Jeep shopping is extremely frustrating, especially for these older ones. I looked at some many Jeep TJ’s that had much higher asking prices, but a list of issues some even including the 4x4 not working, but this Jeep here for 10K has zero rust and was in perfect working condition, I would even say the body is in excellent condition as well and everything on the Jeep works the way it should. This Jeep TJ also has many features I was looking for, Air Conditioning was a must on my list, but also I had Cruise Control on my wish list, but was not a must have, which this Jeep does have.
    I was also able to get dana axles and the bullet proof 4.0 liter engine, this engine is known for it’s unmatched reliability. I was also able to find it in the 5 speed manual which was a must have for me, the 5 speed just makes it a fun driving vehicle, on and off road. I also wanted and got the 3.73 rear gear ratio and the Tru Track Rear Diff which is what Jeep calls their posi rear, what that means is both rear wheels will get power when stuck compared to an open diff where power goes to the wheel with the least resistance so if you have one tire in the air that is the tire that gets power instead of the wheel on the ground. This Trutrac has worked very well for me offroad.
    The TJ I suppose does have some downsides compared to the newer Jeeps. No powered locks or windows, I suppose this is a downside as it would be nice to walk away from the Jeep click a button and have everything lock on it including the swing gate.
    Power windows really isn’t that big of deal as it is so narrow I can just reach across and role the windows down.
    Some people will say that the TJ has a rougher ride than a new Jeep, personally I don’t think this is true, even Sabrina feels as if my TJ rides better than a JK, which I know is not the newest model of Jeep, but I haven’t driven in a new JL two door to compare.
    I had Ranchero Shocks installed on my Jeep which I highly recommend, these have been great for comfort on and off road.
    Jeep TJ’s did not come with blue tooth radios, although it was fairly inexpensive for me to purchase a new radio that was Bluetooth enabled.
    My TJ like most others also does not have anti lock breaks, so that is something to think about when shopping, I’m pretty sure all of the newer jeeps will have antilock breaks. I grew up in a time thought that most of my cars and vehicles did not have antilock brakes so I am comfortable not having them. Also you will find that newer Jeep Wranglers have a much better airbag setup then the TJ’s all I have is the two front airbags and that is it.
    Finally the last negative of the older Jeep is they are louder than the newer Jeeps, I wouldn’t say by a whole lot, but this Jeep hear even with the hard top on is pretty loud at highway speeds, once you hit 65mph it sounds like a window is open, I have taken the top off checked and even replaced some seals and it’s still pretty loud compared to the newer wranglers.
    Honestly, they are the only downsides to the TJ, which I personally don’t think is that bad and am 100% satisfied with my purchase of an older Jeep.

    I got my most recent Jeep TJ around 8 years ago for $10K. It only had 48K miles. Garage kept, and it still had it's original clear coat. It was a Florida Jeep, so no rust, also no A/C, 5 speed, but I still feel I got a steal. I now have 115K miles since it's my daily driver, but I could not imagine driving anything else. I've been installing the A/C this past year myself, and I can fix the water pump and radiator myself.
    Those will be your weak spots. Because my previous 4.0 Jeeps (1 TJ, 1 YJ) each had over 280K miles when I sold them. My YJ had 368K miles, and I still got $2K for it, and I realize today I was robbed.
    My point is that 4.0 is one of the best engines ever made anywhere, anytime, by anyone. Absolutely bulletproof..

      I paid 5k for my TJ with 215k on it, ten years ago.... Age ain't nothing but a number. Rebuilt the block in a day and that was just for fun. It's never let me down.

      @@timsully8054I paid $5k for 02 stick shift and 110,000 miles….doing lots of little fixes like brake lights and ignition switch. I didn’t know you could add AC after the fact. My big issue right now is getting it smogged here in Cali…..i have been reading the forums to see how to get that done

    I've owned every model of wrangler made; YJ, TJ, JK and JL, and currently own every one except the YJ which I sold. The TJ is the golden age for Jeeps. It has the best balance of modern features (anti lock brakes, airbags, etc) but it's not a rolling computer (JL). It's simply the best jeep ever made

    I bought my TJ in 2005, it has 54,000 flawless miles on it, and I'm never selling it. Mine is Yellow which is not a favorite color of mine for vehicles, but it has grown on me and it is somewhat rare. The TJ goes wherever I aim it, up mountains, down mountains, and everything in between. And as you say, it has AC! I wanted a manual transmission when I was shopping for mine and I'm glad I did buy a manual especially when I am off road. Good Luck!

    I paid $8k for my 2002 sport manual, inline6, 80k miles, in 2011. Best $8k I ever spent.

      700 lb lighter than the JL. Great power to weight ratio in sand. Leave anything for absolute dead. 700 lb extra weight in JL is equivelent to having 4 extra adults in back if you were sand driving. Imagine jamming 4 more adults in back of the tj in sand.

    You have the best Jeep ever made, TJ w/4.0 and 5sp. Working ac and cruise is a plus. Mine is a 99 Sport, same setup. I've had 85 CJ7 (loved that one), and a 89 YJ Sahara, and my TJ is the best. Anything made after they discontinued the 4IL6 is not really a Jeep imo. Enjoy!!!

      I have often wondered if Jeep has ever thought about bringing back a modern TJ Wrangler, something with no frills, smaller size than the current models with only updating what ever they need to meet today's safety passes. The TJ is so loved, that I feel there might be a market for it. I heard a rumor that they are bringing back a straight six engine, so why not put it in a small Wrangler (I know wishful thinking) The TJ really is my favorite wrangler, but I really like those CJ's as well!       I agree, I learned how to drive a TJ 4.0 5sp in 2002 and I fell in love at first sight and drive!!! I haven't owned an automatic since!
      I own a 23 2 door 3.6 6sp and I LOVE EVERYTHING ABOUT IT, but something about the rawness of that TJ, does have something intangible but recognizable like you imply. 😇

    I grabbed mine '02 for $5000. No rust , 164k miles. Owned by a lady... marketplace. Runs great. Love it. And it came with remote door lock

      I have an 02 TJ sport with a 4.0, automatic with cruise and a/c, 2 1/2 suspension and 1 1/4 body lift, 33" BF Mt's and only 110,000 miles on it....zero rust. Absolutely love it....drop the top and hit the trails.

    I miss my 04 LJ, it was a great Jeep. One of the easiest vehicles to work on and was reliable. Had very little issues.

    We have recently purchased a 2003 Wrangler Sahara. We primarily use it as a recreational vehicle as a toad, cruising around destination towns, and off-roading. We absolutely love it! Enjoy the good times!

    Holy smokes, brother, our TJ stories are nearly identical. I live in the Las Vegas valley and have been trail riding with friends and their side by sides (I don't own one) for years. In late '22, I decided I wanted a Jeep and started researching what I'd want. After several months, I decided to hunt for the TJ with a 5spd, 4.0L, hard top, and A/C. After another several months of looking at numerous lemons, I found the perfect '01 TJ. Previous owner had already accomplished much of what I had planned. Came with 4" lift, 33" KO2 tires (now 35"), 4.56 Dana 44 axles, JKS sway bar disconnect, JKS adjustable track bars, Currie Currectlync steering, winch, and Wilderness Racks front and rear bumpers (with swing out tire carrier, jerry can holders and ice chest rack). It had 194K (now about 198K) miles on it with zero leaks and zero oil consumption/loss. Negotiated to $9,500 and drove it home. I couldn't be happier with this Jeep!

    I have a 1997 TJ thing is a beast off road it needs a heater core and some gauge cluster lights but it goes anywhere I love it I bought it from a guy that put over $15 grand in it new lift new tires winch everything is like new I love it

    I've owned my '05 LJ (TJ Unlimited) for several years now. My previous Jeeps from years ago were both CJ5s. My LJ is my forever Jeep. That's it.

    Kenny, you almost got me Jonesing for another Wrangler! GREAT representation for the best engine and model. I had a brand new 2001 60th Anniversary Edition with dual tops as my first Jeep. Someone broke into when I had my handyman business so I traded it in for a Ridgeline with the locking trunk in the bed. Fast forward to 2019 I came across the '05 I bought Lil' Red Ride-n-da-Woods as I finally got to properly mourned my Dad and Godfather passing within 8 months of each other. There is no other sound of the road, air, and various quirks of the body design that brings back all the laughter, smiles, conversations, or longing stares of concentration of them both in my Dad's Jeep (CJ-5) as well as mine. Can't wait to share some of the same with you in yours one day! 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽😁👍🏽

      Lynwood, I hope one day we can go offroading together. You will have to let us know when you are in the area, I know plenty of trails that your truck would be just fine, no Jeep needed. Now, of course if you do get a Jeep that would be even better lol

      Unfortunately the Jeeps do seem to be an easy target for breakins, even if the hardtop on, I bet the TJs and older Jeeps have even a higher break in Rte since we have to remember to lock each door

    Being patient in the search for a TJ and taking it to a mechanic is super important. My third jeep purchase was an impulse buy and , even though it appeared decent, it has had nearly every possible issue that a 24 year old vehicle could have. Whittling through the repairs has been pricey and I am too far into the process to cut bait. The only silver lining at this point will be having the first hand knowledge of the repair history. Beyond that, this jeep is still a blast to drive and I look forward to years of driving enjoyment after all the issues are sorted out!

    Thank you for the detailed review.
    I like the fact that the TJs had A/C. I absolutely don’t give a cr@p about the lack of Bluetooth or any modern tech or power windows and locks or safety mumbo jumbo.
    The TJ is right up my alley. I agree with you on the manual transmission also.
    Someday hopefully I’ll get to post a review about one.

    2000 Jeep TJ (black)
    I am convinced now that the TJ is my favorite car of all time. With that 4.0 I6 there is nothing better. There's just something about it that sucks you in. Once the TJ is part of you it never really leaves. Yup, I traded in a 2017 car for a 2000 one and it's been spectacular. I notice the little things, like the newer Jeep door handles suck compared to the TJ ones. Don't need all the fancy electronics, 4 door fakeness, or satellite radio that has turned Jeep into a Mom car.

    The TJ is the best generation of Jeep with its classic rugged, utilitarian looks and stance, and the off-road prowess of its MB grandfather, only the TJ is far better. There's nothing like the military 2 door, short wheelbase from '41 - '06. Add in the coil suspension, you have the best and most fun Jeep ever built in the TJ.
    I thought about a 3" lift w/ 33's but fortunately very early on getting into off roading Jeeps, many told me, their TJ became very sluggish going from just 32's to 33's in addition to a domino effect of needing additional expensive parts. And I'm glad I listened! Because I drove a TJ with this set up and it didn't have that excellent low-end torque and was very slow off the line. And most of them returned to 32's while some fell for the aftermarket bait, very expensive bait.
    I get many who want to know what the perfect build is. Which is not easy to answer because everyone does different things with their Jeep.
    But I would like to share mine since my '05 TJ Rocky Mtn drives and handles absolutely amazing on and off-road.
    Keep in mind, I am NOT a rock crawler, I'm an adventurer who takes the family beach wheelin, beach camping, surf fishing, and we hit fun, moderate trails in the fall and winter getting to our favorite fishing holes and camp sites. Which is why the build is for what's near and for what we do, nothing was put on this TJ unnecessarily for show. I see too many "spotless Jeeps" with 33's - 38's.
    As long as you have good off-road instincts and common sense, a modest, high-quality build will allow you and your family to have a lot of fun!
    All in, I'm at $29k with my '05 TJ Rocky Mtn. And I can honestly say build wise, I'm done!! I might Raptor line it since the TJ has a few rough paint spots and won't ever have to worry about off road pinstriping again. The best part is, this TJ not only keeps up, but outperforms a lot of these $45k - $95k JK's & JL' s. Due in part to people's inexperience and just "over building". The '05 TJ has a modest build, yet is extremely capable, durable and best of all, affordable. And you don't need a 2nd vehicle or rental to take that long out of state trip anymore because this build affords you excellent on road manners too besides being an off-road animal.
    I encourage any Jeeper to search for a rust-free TJ 4.0 I6, preferably stock, 3.73's w/ LSD and a Dana 44. And to use my build as a "guide". Although I highly recommend this build for anyone who is an adventurer, not a rock crawler. Best of all, it will eliminate you from chasing your tail, and the aftermarket will have one less "just empty every pocket" victim out there!
    It was a lot of trial and error, but it has been well worth it.

    *If you have an "05 or '06 TJ, I highly encourage getting a Wranglerfix.com PCM. These 2 years are notorious for having erratic shift point and "so-called trans issues". Keep in mind, the 42RLE auto trans is actually very good, it's the lousy Chrysler pcm's that have given them a bad rap. Since installing this Wranglerfix pcm, it's like having a new TJ out of the showroom, excellent, smooth shift points and very nice acceleration now with no goofy, unwarranted codes. Thank God, because replacing a trans is something no one wants to do. Coupled with the best engine ever put in any Jeep, the 4.0L I6, and you have one of the best TJ's out there.
    Since doing this, I have had the best experience with any vehicle I've ever had.
    Staying with 32's allows us Jeepers to maintain that great low-end torque, saves us a lot of money on unnecessary aftermarket parts and still be able to wheel most anywhere. It's the best of all worlds!
    One of my favorite mods was added a Banks cat back exhaust giving it a throaty growl, but not obnoxiously loud. Absolutely perfect for the 4.0 I6.
    I might add front and rear ARB lockers and 32" BFG Mud Terrains if the family moves to a place with trails, but for now this is perfect for OBX beach wheelin', etc.
    Most importantly, be honest with yourself, build your TJ for what you will be using it for. And know YOU CAN do great trails and much more with just a 2" lift and 32" ko2's or MT's!
    DO NOT let the aftermarket pushers fool or shame you into thinking you "need" 33" - 40" tires and a 5" lift to wheel. That's ! They know full well, once they get you at 33's, it's a freaking cash cow for them! Because you just embarked on their multi thousand dollar build conveyor belt. And it's 100% unnecessary for moderate wheelin'! Your axles, drive train, drive shafts, engine, gearing and a host of a lot of other stuff now "needs" to be upgraded. The aftermarket pushers feast on naive people. Don't be that guy! Like cereal companies saying breakfast is the most important meal of the day, the aftermarket will continue to take advantage of the misinformed.
    Thanks for reading this, my intention is to help as many Jeepers as possible, and to assist with avoiding making the mistakes I did.

I've been thinking about doing the Rhino Paint as I am getting a lot of pin stripping. Even the vegetation out here in AZ can be tough and scratch the sides of the Jeep as I go through it.       One of the best comments in jeeps I have ever read. Jeep TJs stock can handle 99% of what we throw at it. Rock crawling is different than trail riding. Rock crawling is where the 1% stick can’t always handle (but can handle a lot). Rick crawling is a hobby and costs money. Trail riding and getting out in nature only needs a stock Jeep and doesn’t have to be expensive.

    Very nice! I have a 2000 I bought stock in 2018 from a dealer in Mesa. Had it shipped to San Diego and made her my own. Did a bunch of upgrades and love wheeling in the Anza Borrego desert. Glad to see these beauties being used for what they were intended.

    I’m in Peoria AZ and bought my 2000 TJ back in 2000 new and still have the sticker. It had 616 miles on it and it now has almost 255K miles on it. I just finally had it lifted after 24 years of driving it stock ad my daily driver. It’s a sport with the 4.0 and 5 spd.

    Great looking JeeP.
    I have an 04 Rubicon got it new and its blue like yours. 80K miles now still drives like new. I added power door locks. For $40 locks and unlocks doors and tail gate. It was a 5spd when new but in 2010 I swapped an AW4 auto and love it. I added a 2" JKS lift but sill has 31" tires I just don't need a big size tire. I also have a 2000 Cherokee XJ 150K miles and a 2020 Cherokee trail hawk. If I have to sell one of the jeeps for sure it will be the new 2020 KL. You have a great channel keep the videos coming...

    Just picked up a 2006 6spd x with 20k original miles…teraflex lift, 35’s, 4.88’s for $16.5k. Extremely happy…added antirock sway bar, curreclync 1 ton steering. She’s sharp

    I just bought a 2003 Rubicon here in Phoenix with 120K miles. It is in excellent condition and I paid $16,300. Very happy with it.

      @@MovingForwardAdventures I have a 2004 Rubicon and it is great! But honestly if you are doing more wheeling in the desert, your rig is better. The transfer case on the Rubicon is 4 to 1, so when you are in 4lo it is very slow. I believe yours is 2.73 to 1 in 4lo? much better for everything but the slowest crawling, enjoy!!

    i have a 98 with a 502hp smallblock chevy in it, goes places i should be afriad to go, no issues i just did a total custom paint job, blackcherry mother of pearl with blue/red/ purple metalicas in the clear coats, 6 clear coats custom wheels. i also made well id id nt the interior shop made some super comfy leather seats for long trips. a/c will freeze you out, this was my 6th jeep i paid 3500 for it with a blown engine, no rust no cancer body was perfect, i drove it this last summer from up in central washington to maine ran great, i basically made it into a modern street rod, hard top, love the damn thing, i also have a few other cars, 99 rolls royce silver seraph i also bought used with 30000 miles on it for less than 30 grand. another great car for long trips withe v 12 bmw in it, anyway the jeep is a blast

    I have a 2003 TJ (4.0 straight 6) I had it for over 10 yrs or so and it has served me well and cost me a small fortune in repairs/upgrades but that comes with the territory because these vehicles can take a beating and the majority well do take a beating. I think the first thing to look out for if you're in the market for one is a cheap and or poorly installed lift kits because man when I got mine the previous owner installed the cheapest way to lift a jeep and provides no benefit at all the dreaded spring body lift that just ended up ruining the steering shaft and caused the deadly death wobble.       This is a great point and certainly something to keep an eye our for, I have heard horror stories of cheap lifts destroying the ride of their jeep and making it very unsafe.

    I got a 2005 jeep wrangler X. 4.0 inline 6. 6 speed Standard with
    A/C. Hardtop. I got it back in 2016 with 70,000 miles on it when I drove it home. Now in 2024 I have almost about hit 100K. It’s my daily I love it. I been taking care of it as much as I can. I call her the Silverback.

    I couldn't get my 03 TJ into 4 low. I didn't test 4 low before buying it (like a dummy). I did test 4 high. But the very rudimentary mechanism under the jeep just needed to be adjusted. Took me 5 minutes. Now goes into 4 low no problem.

    I’ve had my 06 TJ Rubicon since it was brand new with 1.5 miles on it at the lot. It’s been modded up a bit since 06. 204,000 miles and it still runs great! 3.5” Rock Krawler lift, Currie tie rod and drag link and a couple new clutches over the years. Warn Zeon winch Tom Woods dc drive shaft etc etc…..it’s the only Jeep I want!

    99 TJ Sport, heavy duty 3.5" krawler branded lift, 35x12.5 on 15's with a Dana 44 geared to 4.88 and lockers - tubed and armored with a similar front bumper set-up to yours (with a smittybilt 9500/synthetic), plenty of recovery parts and medical rescue gear - under a hardtop for similar reasons (old man) lol - northern New Mexican high desert mountain trails, always seeking shiny placer patches and or old frontier home sites (late 1800 early 1900) to run detectors for silver coins (with occasional creek side camping and fishing) - that's right, combining as many hobbies as we can under one toy lol

      I bought a metal detector, bit haven't brought it out on a drive yet, but definitely planning on it. We have a lot of old abandoned mines here in Arizona and would think we could find something out here. I also carry medical and recovery with me, you just never know what can happen and it happens fast. I had to use my winch for the first time a week ago, felt like it paid for itself in just for that one time. Take care and safe travels!

    From the mid-Atlantic here. i bought a 2000 with the 2.5. Pretty much the same desires as yours. Trail riding, exploring, camping etc. I paid $6500 for a 100k mile jeep, and couldn't be happier. Yes, i have some frame rust. All repairable. It's provided me with both a hobby that includes going off road, as well as making repairs and modifications. Do i find issues? Of course, but it's anticipated. i've lifted it a little and put 33's on it. i've replaced everything associated with the steering from the ball joints to the steering box. But it's also taken me to the top of mountains in the appalachians, and to the store for a gallon of milk. Could i daily it? sure, but i bought it as a toy, and it has provided me with endless enjoyment. (and alot of mechanical education too!)

    First off let me welcome you to Arizona! This is an excellent video describing the Jeep TJ. I can say that because I also have a 2001 TJ.
    Mine is silver and black. It is a hatdtop also. I have all the options as yours plus a tilt wheel and an automatic transmission. I've had mine for three years so I've added quite a few add-ons, such as Smittybuilt front and rear bumpers along with a Smittybuilt tire carrier. It also has a Smittybuilt 9500# winch along with an led light bar on the bumper and led pods on the A-pillars. The jeep had a 3.5 " Tereflex suspension along with BFG KO2 33x10.5x15 tires on it when I bought it. Mine had 88k miles on it plus it's an Arizona jeep. It was sold by Galloway Motors in Tucson and since then has remained in Arizona.
    The only issue I've had with mine has been a check engine light that indicated an evac issue. In my case it meant an issue with the aftermarket gas cap was an issue so I replaced it with an OE cap. It solved the issue. Ialso added an aftermarket exhaust system and I upgraded all the speakers and the radio. Then I added a powered base speaker...sounds much better than stock! I pretty much do what you do regarding trail riding and exploring. I assume you must live close to Benson since I was born and raised and now live in Tucson I know most of the areas in Southern Arizona. I'll be sending you an email so keep you an eye out for it. And finally, I really enjoyed your video, keep up the good work!

    I bought a 97 TJ, 3yrs ago for 4800 it had under 50k miles, No rust 1 owner. It was a steal. This was my second jeep. The jeep is now on 35 inch tires, 4" lift, Hard top full doors, 5.3L swapped, auto trans. I love my jeep. I would not take a penny less than 15k. Enjoy your ride.

      I had death wobble for years. Changed everything you could think of. Come to find out it was the castor. Put an adjustable castor in and I’m telling you it worked. NO MORE WOBBLE!

    Jeeps are like Harley's, don't make a lot of sense to some. But it's a family and they hold their value!

I have looked for a local Jeep club and would have thought we had several to choose from Ving that we have so many trails, but the closet club to us is an hour and a half away. We live pretty much in the middle of nowhere 😆. I'm thinking of joining the FMCA offroad club, since we are on the road a lot anyway it may work out for us. We have our first big Moab trip planned this year, super excited for it, we are going with a Fantasy RV group of 14 other RVers for 7 days. Hope to get our first badge of honor there ✌️

    I just got my first Jeep last Friday. It is a 2002 TJ in a really good condition. The side down is the engine, it is the small 2.5 but It is ok being the first one and the price was awesome. Interior is really good and do not have hard top. Ready to have fun with my Jeep.

    I paid $9k for my 2004 TJ, and it already has a winch Rugged Ridge bumpers front and rear a small lift, new tires on it. I'm very happy with it so far. I've had it about a month.

    Great video. I did a build for my dad on my little channel jeepNdirt called everyday TJ. Crazy amount of views due much of the things you talk about. Great size. Reliable. Functional and capable. He's not an RV traveler but you Mahe a good point about these four towing. I'm a jeep veteran and love and have owned my YJ for 27 years and bought and built a JLUR a couple years ago (as seen in my channel) and can simply say, jeeps have changed over time but there's nothing wrong with any jeep. We each have different needs and each jeep has Pros and cons. As long as it has a 7 slot grill its all good 😅 lol. Safe travels friend.

    Good video, hey, when you're off roading you can air down your tires ... most people do it for better traction but you csn also do it just for a smoother ride. You would obviously need take a small air compressor with in the jeep to air up before getting bavk on the road to drive home. You could air down to 15psi with no problem of pulling a tire off yhe bead, that happens around 10psi and lower with out beadlock wheels. The soft tires REALLY make a BIG difference. Have fun wheeling. I've had 2 Rubicons in the past, an '03 then later an '04 ...
    Now im looking for another one 👀.

    You can always consider a set of very mild musicians ear plugs for long highway.
    Insulating the floor helps with the sound also. You can still hear traffic and sirens fine. Dont feel like ear plugs just takes the edge off.

    I bought mine new in 2000 almost identical to your 2001. I almost sold it about 3 years ago and decided to rebuild it from the ground up. I was recently offered almost as much a I originally paid for it. One hell of a COVID project. I even put in TrueTracs front and rear. Yea I know, some say lockers in front…
    I say install the TeraFlex hand throttle.
    Overall you made a 100% rock solid choice!

      You certainly made the right choice of not selling it. I have spoken to so many people who have sold their TJs and regret it.     Brother, i wish we could swap stories over a few beers. I searched 4 years before i found what I wanted at a price i could live with. I ended up with a TJ for many of the same reasons you did. RE coils vs leaf springs - More comfort and better articulation. I got an '05 Rubicon 3 years ago for the same price you paid. You did fine in that respect.
    Where did you get those quick disconnects for the sway bar?

      Jeeps and Beer is the way to my heart lol I bet we would definitely have a laugh over those beers. I was originally looking for a Rubicon TJ, just couldn't find one in my budget. The quick disconnects I use are made by a company called JKs Manufacturing which was a bit confusing to me at first, since I thought maybe they didn't make anything for TJs at all. Here is a link to their website jksmfg.com/ it took me maybe 3 hours to remove the stock ones and replace them with the quick disconnect ones. I definitely recommend them. In under 60 seconds now I can have the antisway bar free. Safe travels out there!

    Bought a brand new 99' Sahara, 4.0L, 5-spd and had nearly every option available. Stronger Dana 44 rear axle, 30" tire group that also gave you the 3.73's, the TruTrac. It had full doors, dual tops (although you were not supposd to fit both on at the same time, I did and never had an issue with war on the corners of the softtop under the hard top. Sound bar, 115 amp alternator I THINK????? was an option? Forest Green with tan/green interior and both tops were tan. Out the door in late 98' it was a tick over $25k
    I soooooooo miss my Jeep. One of those cars you regret getting rid of, but had a faily on the way and three kids don't fit well in that back seat, lol!

    I like the Black & Blue and it is awesome choice for a tow-behind. A/C Heater and 4x4! Only disadvantage to the tow behinds are tire wear without actually using it. Take Care out there!

    Install some sound deadening material under the rug. Including on the wheel wells. That helps a lot.

      I've heard that works pretty well. I've also seen headliner kits for the hard top that probably would help. The only problem is they're velcro and glued on, which most likely wouldn't hold in high-temp regions like mine.

    My current Jeep is an '05 TJ Rocky Mountain edition equipped pretty much the same as yours, minus the cruise control, which I really wish I had. It is patriot blue in color, like yours. My previous TJ was a '97 Sport model with the 5 speed transmission. It too was patriot blue. Like the one I have now, it was a daily driver and went everywhere. Having owned TJs for 10 years now, and having a daughter who owns a 2015 JKU Sahara, I feel qualified to share an opinion: Your review of the TJ is spot on. Nothing I would say different. The JKU is quite a bit nicer in terms of cush, but it just isn't as fun to drive, and not nearly as reliable. Crashworthiness? My only experience is a head on impact at about 15 to 20 mph with the brakes locked up. No injuries thank God. The front axle control arms (stock pressed steel) folded on themselves allowing the axle to move rearward under the engine. The axle bent, and the transfer case housing split. So it absorbed the impact, whether as designed to do or not. The lone airbag did not deploy, which was sort of surprising to me. The CRV that turned into my lane popped every airbag it had.

    I had a 2000 red sport manual with camel interior. Loved it. Traded it in in 2006 at 144,000 miles before my 1st child was born for a 4 Runner for $6,500 (pressure from the family). The 4 Runner was great but regretted selling the Wrangler ever since. Especially at that price (KBB at that time) Now everyone wants $10,000. I paid $22,000 new, Soft top with No AC.

    Very interesting video. I also own a TJ 4.0 and I'm in the same spirit about light off-roading. I went several times to USA and visit a few Jeeper friends. Maybe someday to Arizona !! Herve from France.

    I have a 2003 tj 4.0 5 speed, no rust anywhere. Ac,heater that will cook you. I love it. Keep putting the fluid film under it every other year,keep it clean and don’t run it through the puckerbrush and it will last you a long long time.

    I put the Bds long arm on mine and upgraded my stereo to a CarPlay and it’s marine grade Incase it rains with the top off. And did the WJ knuckle and brake swap

    I have a ‘97 Jeep TJ, 4.0, manual, A/C, Soft top and a ‘23 JLU 3.6, auto, A/C, Soft top.
    Love driving the TJ locally; not so much on the highway or for longer than 40 minutes.

    Original owner, dd ‘98 Sahara (326k miles->). Cons:frame rust-search & add drain holes & flush frame often. Fuel, oil, temp gauge inaccuracy. OEM radiators will leak at the plastic sides. Use SAE engine oil: gaskets will dry out & cause oil leaks with synthetic. OEM exhaust manifolds crack. Fuel return lines are near exhaust manifold-keep them in good shape to avoid engine fires. Use specified coolant. Keep tires balanced & rotated-they will wear unevenly and cause problems if ignored; annual/as needed alignments. Regular lubrication of suspension components, door/tailgate hinges, interior and exterior door latches, window regulators, seat frames/sliders, seatbelts.

    Plus you can buy two TJ's for the price of a RZR or Can Am. Really nice TJ, and a great price from the looks of it by the way. I've had a 2001 for 22 years with a bunch of mods with the typical issues, there are numerous channels and forums that list the common problems. If you're not worried about weight you can add dynamat for noise, to a lesser extent rhino liner or equivalent.

    I have a 99TJ with 45K miles, 5 speed manual and 4 inch lift. It drives great!! My biggest mistake was trying to put a new top on it when it was cold outside. Not a good idea.

      I used to have a Ford Ranger with a vinyl bed cover, whenever I removed it in the winter, it was near impossible to put it back on, I would imagine the top on the Jeep being even more difficult in the winter.

    ride quality is more about your vehicles set-up, tire sizing (sidewall), and air settings than that of the make or model - qualifying this statement as strictly 'ride' quality ignoring all other factors - example: smallest rim along with tallest/widest tire (say, a 35x12.5 on "15's") for maximizing sidewall flexibility, driving on 25lb's of air regardless of manufacture recommendations (understanding you may be giving up other aspects such as gas milage, and wear & tear to tread while on the blacktop) - ask around, some tire brands are known for their stiff rides due to their compound make-up and multi-ply sidewall construction - ask yourself if that's necessary for your specific application, as these ideals and choices will affect ride quality more than the make or model - our two cents

    I am super blessed to have a 98 Sahara TJ, 4.0,5 spd.came with a 4 inch cheap lift, husband decided to put a quality 6 inch long arm lift and change the drive shaft angle and much more, put 37/14.50/15 Toyo Open Country tires on it and I'm only 5ft 3 tall. I absolutely love my white Sahara but need suggestions on some simple hoop steps to put on so I don't need a stool to get in everyday 😵‍💫

      That sounds like a great setup! Would a long hanging pull strap from the roll bar be enough for you to grab and pull yourself up with, then you clip it or velcro it to the bar once in. I have also seen power steps on the newer Jeeps that drop down to enter and then lift back up for driving and offroading.

    I’m an original owner of a 1997 “spec-ordered” TJ Sport. When the “round eye” look came back….I was to the dealership….and ordered mine. It took quite a few months, as the inline 6 with 5 speed was on back order. Mine now is approaching 150k….and she still runs like new. Rust? Yep…I’ve had my frame recapped…replaced the two front fenders and windshield frame…..but surprisingly, there is no rust on the body. Mine has been everywhere from the Outer Banks of NC to the White Mountains in Maine. I also own a classic Porsche, a new Tacoma…my wife’s Subaru Forester. But more often than not….I drive the Jeep. I’m retired Navy and retired federal LEO. Life is good…and I’m downsizing….but? I’m seriously considering a complete restoration, (&20-25k) replacing with a new frame, upgrading the interior, modernizing the audio, modernizing the suspension, all electronics, etc. And yeah….I’m approaching 70….call me a “softie”….all my kids learned driving “stick” on her….I just can’t easily part with her. Too many adventures….too many memories. Great video.

    Paid $12K in 2011 for a stock 2004 Rubicon with 75K miles. Only mods I put on were a 6" long arm suspension lift, 35x12.5xR15 tires, and a winch.

    Just bought a 1997 sahara, 4.0, 5spd, hardtop, 150k, $4500. None of the lights worked, upholstery shot, needed a jump start to run . $25 headlight switch fixed the lights, new battery and $1400 in Katskins upholstery and some plastic panel screws, she’s good to go!

      I am finding it is easy to find parts and accessories even for these older Jeeps. My starter went bad yesterday and I found a car quest with one in stock. Would have bet money I needed to order one for a vehicle that is over 20 years old. Have fun and safe travels!

    Yeah, I love that Deep Patriot Blue. Jeep had some sick colors back then. Like all these Deep colors like Deep Amethyst etc. Almost like a flip flop effect where it's sometimes kinda black and then gets a VERY intense xy color sparkled with metallic sparks if hit by the bright sun. They should bring these back.

    Around 09:56 you said wanted to make sure you had Dana axles. All TJ have Dana axles Dana 30 up front Dana 35 or Dana 44 in rear. If it has anything else it's after market. Most the reasons you got a TJ is why I got my TJ Unlimited. I had mine 10 yr's and love it.

    I got a 97 2.5 5 speed one owner for 7k same blue as yours plastic windows pretty basic but fun to drive I got it for the plow it had on it but they are more pure jeep than my more polished JL rubicons

    I bought my 1st year 97 Sahara TJ in 1998 w/5sp tranny and 8k miles on it.
    I still own it with minimal mods including 4:10 gears on 33". Ox locker up front and limited slip rear just for the hell of it. It only sees off road on some utility jobs.
    I may be buried in mine. 😅
    I have my eyes on an 2006 LJ.
    edit: I found an AZ/CA TJ / LJ, oem 05 Rubicon, I'm happy.

    I love your channel. I'm a Jeep person.
    I like the comments that you've been getting on your videos. I am thinking of purchasing a 2013 wrangler sherman jumbo.
    While I love it's so far pre-purchase, I have almost no luck finding out anything about this online or youtube. Does anybody know what it is?
    Or is this somebody's after-market concept?

I have found the Jeep Forums to be a great source for information while shopping for a Jeep, you may want to check the JK Forum about a Sherman Jumbo, I don't think it's an official Jeep brand. Sounds more to me like someone named their Jeep/modified it to be that. That is just my guess, though. I'll pin your comment to let others see it and maybe someone else has some info to share.

    I bought my 97’ TJ in 2000 for what you paid for yours $9,700. Had 56,00mi and I drove it for 14yrs. and it had 225,00mi on it when I was done and sold it. Kept up on maintenance and still ran as good as the day I bought it. Kicked myself because I sold it to cheep. Didn’t do enough looking because didn’t realize how expensive the newer ones were and no where near as good.

    I have a 06 Tj and love it! Soft top but a/c. Zero rust 60k 13k price would pay it again and will take it to my grave. We live in the Blue mountains. It is my way to work in the winter.

    I got my 06 6spd Rubicon at a dealership. Single senior owner, 97k miles, cruise control, perfect A/C. Not a speck of rust on it, not even discoloration.
    I paid 18k for it, which isn’t the best deal, but I plan on passing it down to my children as a streetable rock buggy and it’s a phenomenal starting point, so I bit the bullet.

      Sounds like a good deal to me, I was looking at Rubicons for a little bit, but couldn't find a good one for under 15K. I just watched a video from TFL and they featured a new Rubicon with a price tag of 65K I personally would much rather have the TJ Rubicon. Have fun and safe travels!

    I also have a 2001 TJ, 5 speed, EASY shifting, much better ride than my 1980 CJ 5, 4 cylinder, Enough power for me, Great on the Highway, as well as off road. Makes a good tow vehicle because of less weight. No power windows, BFD , I need the exocise . There are plenty of Jeeps available I would recommend a TJ, but get what you like, and don't be afraid to get dirty, or a little scratched up. Happy Trails

    In on my 3rd or 4th tj depending on how you count.
    Two years ago inoicked up mine for 7k. Knowing it needed a tansmission. But i already had one to go in it so i wasnt worried. It was very very hard to find one that wasnt hacked up, or rotted out beyond salvage. Of coursen im in the north east and had to go two states south.
    Guy was orobably wonderd why i showed up 5+ hours away with cash in hand and didnt ask to even drive it
    About a year in and a head gasket led me to almost a complete rebuild since i was there. Just dod control arms, shocks and tires. Between it with over 200k on it and my 1992 alante thats how i get to work.
    Everyone tells me to get a new one. Nope. I looked at them. I love my tj
    As i get okder the highway noise and bumps get old but thats why i have the "old mans" caddy i guess.
    Wife learned to drive standard on hers she ordered in 98. Thats how we met as I got volentered to teach. Actualy ended up finding her original one and buying it back

    Try some rubber door edging on top of the tailgate. It will help with air noise.

    I restore TJ's.
    They are tractors good for 300K miles if maintaned. By tractor i mean they struggle on the highway when I/you slap on 35" tires with a 4" lift vs factory TJ. Small tires do well with stock axle gearing....but open up your DIY or pocket book for 4.88 axle gearing to move 35" tires.
    Above is if you want a daily driver with modest off road performance,
