Australia lists Koalas as endangered species - BBC News

  • Australia has listed the koala as an endangered species across most of its east coast, after a dramatic decline in numbers.
The once-thriving marsupial has been ravaged by land clearing, bushfires, drought, disease and other threats.
Australia has been urged to do more to protect koalas from rapidly diminishing habitats and climate change.
The species was listed as "vulnerable" in those states and territory only in 2012. Despite the rapid deterioration, governments have been accused of dithering.

  • @jlryan

Koalas are incredibly difficult to rehabilitate in a new environment. They have acquired taste. There are many species of the eucalyptus trees, but koalas growing up eating a few species of the tree leaves will only want to eat the same species, and if you present different species of the same tree genera, they will refuse to eat and instead prefer to starve to death. This made the koalas chained to their original habitats. There are exceptions but this is the majority cases. This is why the habitat destruction is extremely damaging. With the government totally inept at the koalas' situation, koalas are going to be extinct eventually, at least technically i.e. no more wild koalas. It's a preventable catastrophe.

It's weird that they survived so long without upper brain function. If you put a leaf on a plate in front of it, it wouldn't even know what to do with it. I doubt they're going to go extinct though. humans love them too much.

Quolls were once hunted for their furs. Dogs and cats kill them, out compete them, their prey habitat is encroached, cleared, reduced. I've seen a lot of aussie rural countryside but I have never in my life seen a Quoll in the wild. You can drive for days past farmland, lucky if it takes more than an hour to pass through state forest and natural forest is still up for logging, clearing and agribusiness.

And I'm not even talking about climate change, the aboriginals used to burn back parts of forests in controlled amounts, so that if a forest fire happened it wouldn't cover such a wide area if it spread quickly, and wouldn't cause the damage that it did to both wildlife and Australian people's homes. Ok, *but,* and here me out here, let the population get low enough, but not too low, to wipe out Koala Clamydia, but keep it still high enough to bounce back first. Think about it, they're herbivores, right? And captive bred, while not super happy, helps population growth. Look at those things, and tell me you don't want one? Why wouldn't you, they're adorable. But why don't people usually have em as pets? Clamydia. Remove that, which can be done easiest with a lower population, and bam. They become basically designer pets. I know there are a lot of ethical issues here, but bottom line it would work to bolster their population.

Koalas are so dumb that they will not eat eucalyptus leaves from off of a table because it's not a tree. They have evolved to ingest only the most nutrient- deficient plant. They literally have smooth brains.
It's only natural that they go the same way as the pandas.
