Found a red one in a thrift shop. Paid $5.99 for it. No instructions but all the parts were included. This video is the first I found to figure out how to use it. Excellente!
I love that you were honest in your review. America's Test Kitchen made this product look like it was perfect. I am glad my expectations are more realistic now. Thank you.
We don't see nearly enough independent channel reviews of those products. It's almost as if those aren't promoted in the algorithm. TH-cam doesn't let us filter searches for the least viewed content. Only the most viewed.
Thank you so much for your Swissmar Borner V-1001 V-Slicer Plus Mandoline 5 Piece Set Review. It was very educational & authentic for me. I have encountered many of the same problems, when using hard vegetables with the Julienne 7mm & 3.5mm blades. I appreciate, you didn't edit out these difficulties, as it answered many of my questions, concerns, & issues with using this slicer. Please continue to post your TH-cam Videos, as they are important public service videos.
Xln't video; I've had this exact model for many years and STILL enjoy using it. I DO appreciate your NOT editing out the small pitfalls when using carrots, as an example. A really well-balanced and objective video. I'm going to use mine, now, for more chopping/dicing as I'd forgotten how well it performs.
+ FYI - I'm still new at using a mandolin, but I think that I have an answer to your potato and carrot slicing problem(in the video)... I've found that you need to increase your velocity and increase pressure. The first couple passes might skate a bit, but after that if you keep up the velocity (slicing by momentum), you should be able to slice harder vegetables and tubers easily. Don't bear down!
I bought one of these from a garage sale 5 years ago never used... I finally pulled it out today and was confused about how it works. Thanks so much for this video!
I just bought this and love it. Surprisingly easy to clean as well. As long as you rinse with warm water right after use, everything washes off right away. I bought a pair of no-cut gloves because I’m terrified of cutting my fingertips off. I use two gloves on one hand.
I just ordered one of these. The way it thin slices tomatoes, cucumbers and peppers sold me. I ordered a safety glove, too! This was a good use demonstration, but needs strong comments about safety.
I've had this exact model for over 15 years and I love it and I use it on everything and it's still works amazing. The best things about it are ease-of-use easy to clean and easy to store
Just wanted to share, I bought this model in 1987, I still use it to this day. Works awesome. Slightly different features like the lock in place for the accesories.
@DC-hp2br Someone had one of the 1980s models for sale on Ebay, so I bought it. The packaged arrived twenty minutes ago. What are some cool '80s tips and tricks that I can use with this mandoline? Is there a David Bowie guitar slice method? Or maybe the safety grip doubles as an air hockey paddle, and is sliding the puck to victory, 1980s style! Come to think of it I seem to recall that everything was better back in the 1980s, even the mandolines and Basset Hound puppies.
I have the earlier version of the V-Slicer. My late husband bought it about 20 years ago. He only used it once and it sat in its box in the back of my cupboard until last week. Had to thinly slice potatoes for a recipe so I gave it a go. It's a real time saver and now I'm getting the hang of it, I'll be using it more often.
I have has this unit since the mid 90’s. BEST kitchen item!! I use it exactly the same way. No worries about cutting myself until the veggie gets smaller then I switch to the holder😃
I bought one in 1988 after watching an Infomercial about it on a 6 foot TV dish mounted outside the house on the ground. I just sliced up 1/8th inch potato slices and it works as good as it did 31 years ago.
Excellent presentation techniques! Well prepared, no talking heads, just right to the action and demonstration. Everything moved along, even at 16 minutes. And I bought one. :)
- Love it, love it, love it ! ! ! I bought this model 22 yrs ago at the Home & Garden show & am still using it regularly. It's still as sharp as in the beginning. The only problem is, it's hand held. Wish it had feet.
Blades on Borner's own videos seems so much sharper. They have no problem with carrots. Nothing falls out of the holder. Very little is left at the end. Maybe they edit out those problems. Or their mandolines are simply spanking brand new just off the factory floor, and perhaps this one is a bit older. I see that they cut at a much higher speed. Perhaps there is some technique in using this device. The speed with which the fruits or veggies meet the blade may make them easier to cut.
I just got one for my birthday and your review was very helpful. I liked how you explained how to put the blades in the holder after using. Very thorough review.
Great review! You showed just what my wife wanted to see. She read a comment somewhere that it didn't slice thin enough. You showed it does slice thin beautifully. Thanks for the demo!
The BEAUTY of this device is the V it results in you needing to use less pressure. I UNFORTUNATELY bought a different style on Amazon, because the plastic broke on 15 year old Borner (I used it every day - extensively = made sauerkraut too). The other one I bought was heavy, awkward, and I couldn't even cut big carrots or cabbage and everything I did with it felt like I was going to cut myself. THIS ONE is the BEST!!!!!! I am going to toss the $50 I spent on something else and buy one of these. UNFORTUNATELY I didn't think the Borner was sold on Amazon because I only saw it at Fairs.
About time someone tried a carrot to Julianne great demo to show it does not Jukianne carrots, as I have suspected, but felt frighten for demonstrator her fingers got close to the blade a few times, thank you for a honest review and display
Just seen this and find it a great review. Obviously it takes experiment and a bit of getting used to but once mastered the V slicer is a great tool. Too many people give up far too easily and blame the utensil.🤣🤣
I have a deli meat slicer that will do tomatoes and onions perfectly, as well as it does meat. My purpose of getting a mandolin like this, would be to make french fries for my deep fryer. The price is right, but I'm thinking the julienne blade on this tool wouldn't be any more effective than what I already have in my Breville Souse Chef food processor. I'm thinking, I would need a more advanced mandolin for making waffle fries and fancier cuts.
Smart. I sliced my finger so bad in the blades. I will be using the gloves. I knew better and tried to slice without them. Silly move in my part, but wise move. Use the cutting gloves
If you are going to get a mandoline like this and plan on cutting small things like garlic, use cut resistant gloves. Microplane and Mercer make good cut resistant gloves.
I’ve had one since the early 70s. Exactly the same, except mine has a collector bowl the unit fits it. Still sharp, easy to use and care for. I have never cut myself . I have been given expensive mandolins but gave them away because I love this
I go to an Asian market for fresh produce and they sell very large carrots. Those might work well. Also daikon would be great with this. I make kimchi too. Great video.
I love your review. I have one and I love it. However, looking at you cutting into the direction your hand gave me the willies. You should never cut in the direction of your hand, always away from your hand. Talking from experience. Other than that, great review. :-)
The link on Amazon says this will cost over $88 plus $22 postage- and I'm a Prime customer (which often gives me free postage but not always). I'm sure this price is way over the top compared to what I can get on eBay and other platforms.
I learned a lot by watching this video but you made me nervous when you started cutting w/ knife toward your hand. I think I’ll just cut my carrots by hand but I’m going right out to the kitchen to slice my cucumber. Thank you for your time and advice.
I was really worried about your Safety! Too bad the large Food Holder only has 4 prongs that won't really handle smaller items like Carrots, Strawberries, Grapes, Kiwi and similar things. Otherwise, great demo!
Great review. I've been looking to get one for my mom for a long time now, and this is probably the best I've come across. Those pesky carrots sure were disobedient!
We bought ours a few years ago and today tried to use it to cut carrot in to juliennes and found it a bit hit and miss, and we can see now after watching your video on how cutting carrots sucks on the ‘V’ slicer, but now it’s out of the cupboard I do intend to persevere with it until I get it Right! That is correct. It's like following through with a golf swing.

@Trace Nathaniel Flixportal :)
@Dustin Demetrius thank you, signed up and it seems to work :D Appreciate it !
@Trace Nathaniel Happy to help :)

great video. And finally somebody shows that it's not super easy you do need a bit of strength to do hard vegetables like onions

That V shape looks like a lethal weapon on fingers.
I bought one in 1988 after watching an Infomercial about it on a 6 foot TV dish mounted outside the house on the ground. I just sliced up 1/8th inch potato slices and it works as good as it did 31 years ago.
Watched several videos before I found yours - so glad I did! Yours is THE BEST!!!

Terrific tutorial to the written instructions! So clear about how easy it is to use and the results. Thank you!
Glad you found it helpful 🤩
Your review is the most hones and realistic one of this kitchen tool. Thank you!
Glad you liked it, Jennifer 😀
Holy crap this woman has a death wish the way she's using both the knife and the mandoline!
Seriously!
she just isn't a pussy
I ADMIT the Carrott made me nervous. I mean maybe it never happens but boy if you're hand should ever slip its like a guillotine. A HAND GUILLOTINE
My thoughts exactly! I got especially nervous each time she held a vegetable in the palm of her hand and sliced it with a chef's knife. DANGEROUS!
Thank you for all the tips. In the instructions I received there wasn't anything like you showed in there. Thanks again.
You’re welcome 😁

Finalmente um vídeo que também mostra as dificuldades de manusear o mandolim. Às vezes precisa fazer uma forcinha pra fatiar o alimento.
I still prefer this model over the newer one, and I was glad to find out that the company still makes it.
Thanks for sharing, Rogier! Sometimes, older is better :)
Good that you showed us that, so one doesnt make a mistake and buy it for that purpose only! Thanks Jo-Anne!!

This was informative and suspenseful. You gotta get yourself a safety glove.
I agree. I was really nervous watching the red cabbage and the carrot demos

Very impressive for a small slicer. Good tip to leave it out as you'll use it more! Thanks as always.
You're welcome, Teresa!
This seems clumsy to have to hold it while slicing. Wouldn’t one that rests on a built in stand be much easier?
I inherited one of these from my mother but the manual was gone. Thank you for the very helpful video.
Top review! Well done and very informative and helpful. Thank you!
You’re welcome 😀
Mine was stained by carrots on the first use. Any recommendations for removing the carrot stain?
You can try slicing potatoes afterwards and the juice may remove the stain. It generally goes away after several cleanings 😁
Thanks very much for this review. I bought one of these a while ago but haven't used it much. You've inspired me to try it again! 👍🏻😊💜
Glad it was helpful 😀👍
Good review - very helpfull. I liked it better when you cut the veg , when it was in the holder. I was worried about your fingers.

I was praying you didn't hurt yourself!
Yeah, me too. The way she uses a knife is flat out dangerous :/
Every time she didn’t use the handle, my fingers curled under and my fists tightened.
Good review, but was freaked out by how close your hand is coming to the very sharp blade when slicing that carrot!
Best slicer ever
going on 15years I tried it on frozen meat not bad for hot pot
Great review. I've been looking to get one for my mom for a long time now, and this is probably the best I've come across. Those pesky carrots sure were disobedient!
Thanks! Yes, the carrots were pretty hard to work with. Otherwise, this Mandoline is close to perfect :)
Thank you. I know now thaat I will not buy this slicer considering the difficulties you have to slice carrots. Is it because of the V blade... ?
Thank you so much for this review.
It was honest and very informative
You’re welcome!😀
Would you recommend this original model V-1001, or the newest model V Power V-7000?? Does the V7000 come with the same caddy?
We bought ours a few years ago and today tried to use it to cut carrot in to juliennes and found it a bit hit and miss, and we can see now after watching your video on how cutting carrots sucks on the ‘V’ slicer, but now it’s out of the cupboard I do intend to persevere with it until I get it Right! Hello, thanks for the great review ! Have you noticed some improvements with the carrots ? Did they get easier to julienne with time and experience ? Thank you !
4:21 none of the parts are dishwasher safe?
I believe that the strong detergent in dishwashers blunt the extremely fine and sharp blades very quickly
As with every good knife - the dishwasher makes the blades dull. A knife could be re- sharpened, this one not. Just rinse it well (acid in tomatoes ...) and it's good to go. My mother in law had one for over ten years.
If you are worried about yellow/red stains on the plastic buy the V6,
Risky work, I use anti-cut gloves which I got from the hardware store for carrots as they slip off....anti-cut gloves are a MUST otherwise you will have a bloody julian cut of your hand as the Borner blades are SHARP :-P
Thanks... I ordered 2 and also pairs of "no-cry gloves"... so look for your commission from Amazon. GOD Bless...
👍😀
