Mick Jones comes into my record shop quite regularly ( pre- covid) and is happy to chat about what he's been recording recently, happily signs autographs and will come straight up and shake my hand. True gent and legend.
@@garythompson5316 They say 'Never meet your heroes ' but my wife was doing a p.a for a Bowie signing at hmv and not only was he the nicest man but she's got a photo of herself next to him. Couldn't agree with you more.. went to see The Mighty Wah in the Lomax, Liverpool many years ago, Didn't know Mick Jones was there, got on n stage, pub come nightclub stage! n played some bouncin tunes.. totally unexpected and Great Night Then had a beer at the bar with the lads. .

Listening to this again after all these years is like a punch in the guts. Such a perfect pop song. Verse, chorus, key change, synth strings, it's so beautiful, the music is so optimistic, almost sardonically so and it's counterpointed by the lyrics which are like stepping out of the Morning TV fakery into the real world. Look at the clock going backwards. It's 2019. It couldn't have been more prescient.
Not really with references to the Northern Irish conflict that is now resolved somewhat but not completely by the coalition government of Republicans and Loyalists., tensions are still there with the opposing populace. There is also a reference to Scotland wanting independence from England and that the Welsh will or may follow. So not really a British anthem at all.
@@jamesmcnellis7457 Ah but it was a political song and the PTB didn't like it so there's the reason it only made no 19, probably was number one really, brilliant tune. Fook the government!

Heard this once on the radio, went out and bought the single, never heard it again and no one seems to know it, why is that?, such a brilliant song....
1990 keeps getting better! I was only 8 then and my only exposure to music was small town radio, MTV and my older brother's tape and cd collection. I love digging through this era and finding gems like this. 1985 to 1995 was such good time for music. Heard this song on WTUL for the first time the other day. WTUL is Tulane University's radio station here in New Orleans and now this song is on repeat. Such a good tune!
Who thinks this song should be reissued...it's 2024 and this country is going to shit, maybe if people hear this song they may remember how good Great Britain really was.
The song is great but living under Thatcherism again? You really are long overdue a visit to the padded room. People complain about people stealing cars and burning the parks down in the estates, but Thatcher stole everything whether it was milk, train, gas, electric or water she stole the lot or allowed others to do the same in her name.

The U.K. cannot right historical wrongs - but can no longer, without shame, profit from them. Plus: I want you to know and understand that I pride myself on ripping-off the English, Scottish, tourists and I passionately enjoy the experience with all my Heart and soul. And It gives me immense pleasure to announce that, indeed.
@ the tragic thing about the song is that, with the benefit of hindsight, we can see the UK has exactly no interest in this at all. The past is steeped in shame, and tommorrow will be too!
@ there is no country on this earth where no ppl have been wronged or where there never was slavery of abuse of others. Stop using non existing victimhood as an excuse to be a perpetrator and a useless bum.
@ ah you calling me a nazi says a whole lot about you (so mature). FYI, my grandparents, mom and siblings actually suffered under nazi occupation you ignorant fool. We do not blame current Germans for that. Everyone encounters problems in life, the difference is some of us make the best out of the cards we are given, take personal responsibility for what we do with our lives and make a positive contribution in the here and now instead of dwelling on the past that cannot be changed. Others play the blaming game and just add to the misery and polarisation. You just showed perfectly well which category you are in.
Why the hell this song, with its obvious Mick Jones influence, only ever hit number 19 in the UK singles chart is beyond belief. I remember listening to it regularly on radio 1 in my car on the 26 mile drive to work and thinking I was listening to a definite number 1. Sadly, that never happened.
Prophetic (from a late 2020 perspective). And utterly beautiful musically. Universally diverse band it ought to be noted here. Thank you, Messrs Frame and Jones.

Definitely.... too me one of the most underrated songs ever.

Spot on mate, after this week it feels amazingly apt. Come back Roddy Frame, our country needs you.
Couldn't agree more Asif. Upbeat tune that a postman could be whistling matched with biting clever lyrics. Feels like a lost art now.
This band always had some interesting chord progressions. I wasn't much for "80s music" (pop/Brit pop) back in the 80s but I liked these guys.
Asif you said exactly what I was thinking regarding the music. 👍
The clock being faithful to the TV-am original.
First time I heard this I went straight out and bought the single.....and it's still brilliant!

First week of October, 1990. This was the song playing on the radio when l woke up on my very first day as a student at Portsmouth University

Roddy is one of the greatest song writers of his generation
Agree, totally underrated
And mick jones
This should be the national anthem. Ditch the dreary God Save The Queen.
Feel the same way here in the States with the GAP Band's Patty Train. Now that's some star spangled groove instead of Oh, can you see...?
Unless it's The Pistols.
2020 has been such an awful year I've been revisiting old tunes that remind me of better times. I'd almost forgotten we once felt this optimistic.
Forgot how brilliant this song is after just seeing it again on TOTP on BBC 4 . It still sounds so fresh , not 30 plus years ago old .

One of those great, upbeat tracks that has a real, darker meaning - some don't even realise. I wonder how many sing along but don't think about it?
The past is steeped in shame, but tomorrow's fair game,,, brilliant lyrics
Jock's got a vote in parochial
Ten long years and he's still got her
Paying tax and and doing stir
Worry about it later
And the wind blows hot and the wind blows cold
But it blows us good so we've been told
Music's food 'til the art-biz folds
Let them all eat culture
The past is steeped in shame
But tomorrow's fair game
For a life that's fit for living
Good morning Britain
Twenty years and a loaded gun
Funerals, fear and the war ain't won
Paddy's just a figure of fun
It lightens up the danger
Corporal sneers at a Catholic boy
And he eyes his gun like a rich man's toy
He's killing more than Celtic joy
Death is not a stranger
And Taffy's time's gonna come one day
It's a loud sweet voice and it won't give way
A house is not a holiday
Your sons are leaving home, Neil…
In the hills and the valleys and far away
You can hear the song of democracy
The echo of eternity
With a rak-a-rak-a feel
The past is steeped in shame
But tomorrow's fair game
For a life that's fit for living
Good morning Britain
From the Tyne to where to the Thames does flow
My English brothers and sisters know
It's not a case of where you go
It's race and creed and color
From the police cell to the deep dark grave
On the underground's just a stop away
Don't be too black, don't be too gay
Just get a little duller
But in this green and pleasant land
Where I make my home, I make my stand
Make it cool just to be a man
A uniform's a traitor
Love is international
And if you stand or if you fall
Just let them know you gave your all
Worry about it later
The past is steeped in shame
But tomorrow's fair game
For a life that's fit for living
Good morning Britain
The past is steeped in shame
But tomorrow's fair game
For a life that's fit for living
Good morning Britain
Nice one
