Gateway to Faith is a documentary about the visit of Pope John Paul II to St. Louis on January 27-29.
In April 1998, the Vatican announced that Pope John Paul II would visit St. Louis for two days on January 1999 during his trip from Mexico City to Rome. The papal visit was John Paul II’s first and only time to visit St. Louis, and his final visit to the United States during his papacy.
On January 26-27, 1999, Pope John Paul II took part in a youth rally at Kiel (now Scottrade) Center, celebrated mass at the TWA (now Edward Jones) Dome, and led an ecumenical service at the New Cathedral. At the time, the January 27th Mass set the record for the largest indoor gathering in the United States with over 104,000 attending the service.
January 2024 will mark 25 years since this momentous occasion.
