Thanks to all those who brought in the top talent for us to enjoy! I appreciate great wrestling and wrestlers. These are fabulous days for all wrestling fans. The Territory days are gone but never forgotten. Memphis wrestling was the best in the country back then. I spent many days and nights watching the top wrestlers. GOD Bless all of you for entertaining my whole family. I always got my money's worth at these events. Again, thank you all for the memories!!!!
Exactly. As a young kid watching this, I couldn’t really appreciate what he brought to the table. Watching through the eyes of a 51 year old though, I can more than appreciate this. Thank God these classic matches are not lost in time!
He & Harley Race were the only heels who spoke in conversational tones back then. The others were always screaming or belligerent sounding. They also fought other heels and the fans cheered for them against the other heels.Lawler was evidently a hero in Memphis but a heel everywhere else
Agreed, I'm a Hogan fan and started watching his AWA matches and found myself really impressed with Bockwinkle. He was a classic heel champion and told a great story in the ring
Bockwinkel was great, but those screwy AWA finishes where the title would change hands, wait, no it didn't, were very annoying. Maybe if they hadn't run the idea into the ground.
Way back in the mid 70s me and a few buddies went to a show in my hometown (we had a large gym) and Buddy Wayne was on the card. After the show we were hanging out watching Buddy Wayne and these two younger guys tear down and load up the ring. Referee Paul Morton was seen a about a hundred feet away coming out to his car (presumably his) smoking a cig IIRC. One of us kids spoke aloud, "there's that old bald f**k" ref! Let's go f**k with him" and a voice behind us spoke up, "hey, watch it, that's my dad!" That was Ricky Morton. The other kid was Ken Wayne, Buddy's kid.
My uncle used to drive an ambulance for a rescue squad. There was a wrestling show in his town and Greg "The Hammer" Valentine was the big name headliner. During his match, Valentine got kayfabe "injured" and my uncle rushed in to take him out on a stretcher. When they got out to the ambulance, Valentine sat up and said, "let's go get a beer - I'm buying!"
First comment. Great post, when wrestling was wrestling, that mat looks pretty clean for The Mid-South Coliseum most of the time you can see all the dried up blood on the mat. Bockwinkle was about what 47 here?, I wonder how much money he had to give to Vern Gagne for letting him go all over defending the title out of The AWA territory?. 3/11/022.
@@anthonywilliams4943He came to Houston after his defeat by Graham.Paul Boesch had the first card in the Summit to celebrate repeal of a Blue Law forbidding such a card.He brought in Bockwinkel from the AWA.Bruno was called the WWF's biggest star in the program.Boesch later brought in Bob Back Lund after he won the WWF title.
This shows how bad the screwy AWA Phony Title Change Finish really was. Yeah, Nick was disqualified for hitting the referee. But he could just as easily have ruled the contact was inadvertent. It was a judgment call. So, why would a referee in Lawler's home town be biased against him? It doesn't make sense. Maybe it would be okay if this kind of thing didn't happen very often, but the AWA used this finish over and over and over.
Does Lawler ever use a wrestling move? How about a suplex, drop kick , hip toss full nelson, arm bar, wrist lock, abdominal stretch. Nothing but punches/kicks. You see one Lawlor match - you e seen them all. Kicks & punches. Boring!!!
Actually in my opinion lawyer was one of the best at making it sport entertaining. Remember it’s not like this is the true sport of wrestling so who wants to see the arm bar being held on a person for 2 minutes. Lawler in his matches had the best looking punches to look like he was really punching you. The WWF was the most boring the AWA was definitely a non entertaining outfit. The NWA was the ultimate in at least making this fake genre worth watching. If you do your research those old wrestlers credit Jerry Lawleer with revolutionizing the sport by being the first to make entering the ring with music more attractive to the crowd. And yes in his old matches he did use the suplex and pile driver a lot before they outlawed it. Now if you were going to complain about anything it should be the fact that lawler can get beat for half an hour and somehow magically pulls a strap down and well you know the rest. Go figure that out
Jerry was such a punk but he had a territory, it sucked, but a territory. It sucked so bad, lawler and Jarrets paid big money to get Nick B, Flair, and Hogan just to arrive in the hillbilly territory to boost dead ticket sales at the defunct coliseum

Man, I miss old school wrestling. The more I watch Bockwinkle, the more I realize just how good he was.

Classic drama at its finest. With the golden voice of Lance Russell narrating.

❤great classic matches, wrestlers today do have, what these guy have.
It’s unfortunate that most modern fans only know Lawler as an announcer. He was at one time one of the best wrestlers in the business!
Bockwinkle never spilled his liquor, unlike ric flair
Two great wrestlers of their time one of the greatest matches of all times
“ Nick” was the coolest 😎 world 🌎 champ ever!!
Good,solid,scientific,wrestling, professional ism.i miss this.
Splendid ref bump.
Nick held his own at basically near 50 years old but a world superstar, unlike Jerry Flubber
When I found out how old he was I thought he was about ten years younger. He was always youthful looking.
Why didn't Bruno Sammartino ,Harley Race and Bob Backlund ever wrestle Lawler in Memphis?
@JOSEPH KIRKHOM thanks just looked it up they had a draw, do you think the Flair vs Backlund omni match will ever be shown ?
I don't think Bruno was as over in Memphis as he was in the Northeast

Wrestling in Memphis, naturally Lawler wins. How did they do in Minneapolis?

Interesting match, half the match was nothing but a wrist lock. I appreciate the story but it wasn't for me. Also, the lawler counter his own pin?

This was back when they were still showing wrestling ad a sport. So they're trying to keep it simple.

In a way I like nick bockwinkel and a way I didn't he was a tough competitor and he had ways he can beat a person. A little sly and arrogant
