$38 per hour plus over time at time and a half, double time, triple time. Show me any private system that pays that kind of money ....NOT A CHANCE. There are a lot of nurses making a hell of a lot of money yearly. $75,000 annually ...without any overtime.
These nurses are just plain GREEDY .....BECAUSE IT IS THE PUBLIC SECTOR UNIONS AGAIN.

It's happening in the USA as well. Here nurses are leaving facilities in droves for agencies where they make more money and don't have to work extra shifts back to back. And you have 30 + patients at least to care for when you are already exhausted. Sometimes 60. Not safe.

Perhaps it is time for a revision and redefinition. For starters the title of 'nurse' should become something like 'Level 2 Doctor' to recognize their educational expertise and elevate perspective working conditions.

I worked as a Nurse for nearly 20 years. I will say that Nursing is the most exploited, abused and neglected of any profession that I'm aware of.
The primary reason why, is that Nursing is a female dominated profession. I worked for a municipal employer who also ran long term care facility. The workforce in long term care was 70% Part Time, yet other departments within the same municipal corporation like police and fire departments were virtually 100% Full Time employment.
I remember asking the Fire Chief several years ago, how many Part Time Fire Fighters were there. His answer has stuck with me ever since. He said, "There's no such thing as a Part Time Fire Fighter."
It was always an uphill battle with regards to any collective agreement improvements such as wage increases and benefits. The employers response was often along the lines that these health care workers can use the benefits of their husbands. This was obviously on the sexist assumption that all of these health care workers were married.
We have two young daughters. We are doing everything that we can to encourage them not to go into Nursing.

As a registered nurse in the states, I believe this was well presented. I went through a strike in 2000 into 2001. Hospitals will continue to staff using mandatory overtime because they can. It’s cheaper to mandate than to pay for benefits when they hire more nurses. Government running health care is not what’s best for patients. Things got worse when they took over. The emphasis went from patient care to charting. I left and went into a line of work outside the hospital. Best decision I’ve ever made. Wish you nurses in Canada the best.

    • @allayneoreilly4677
      @allayneoreilly4677 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Question; if there are more nurses than ever, how is forced overtime a thing? That doesn't make sense. It's cheaper to pay for 3 8hr shifts at normal time, than it is to pay 2 shifts 12 hrs. with 4 hrs of overtime, no? If there are excess nurses out there, how could they not fill 3 8 hr shifts? This makes no economic sense.

I’m not sure why getting medical help in Quebec is so difficult… this happened long before Covid. I have family that moved there and they had to wait a year to get a Dr. When I wanted to visit they said don’t come because if you get sick you won’t be able to go to the emergency Dept fir 2 days. I was stunned!
I can’t visit because of lack of a proper medical system. We as Canadians should be able to access medical care no matter what province we are in.
Now even here in BC we’re facing Drs shortages… many can no longer get a family Dr they don’t have family practices anymore… snd many family Drs won’t do hospital rounds either… what is wrong? Why should we have to travel hours to see a specialist that we’ve waited almost 1-2 yrs to get an appointment.
We can’t loose our beloved system… we need better working conditions… we’re going to see more private medical healthcare where those who can afford it to get faster medical care… we can’t let that happen.
Please our government Federal and Provincial along with the medical system need to come together and develop a better system.
What saddens me is that this was going on long before Covid.. Covid only brought it to the forefront… we need to realize this has been happening long before Covid. I know because I was in hospital a lot and I saw first hand the struggles… just to get even a bed… we need to save our healthcare system. Stop making it political!

These are all problems caused directly by a publicly funded healthcare system under government management. The Provincial and federal government are already spending money the country doesn’t have. The only way to sustain our healthcare system is either increase taxes by a large margin across the board(which would destroy the middle class) or allow a healthy balance of both private and public healthcare. This would take the enormous strain off the public system and increase quality of care across the board.

They cannot strike or work to rule. Unions are pathetically weak but tough on nursing staff. Nothing changes until the unions change. And of course the public will then pay drastically more taxes for health-care. Is the public prepared.
