I think Jean meant "Marauders" and not Maurders. Marauders mean Soldiers who have lost any connection to Authority or Command and have Resorted in Crime and Looting, such as the Scared Frenchman who have tied up the British inside the Church.
to further back up the idea of that Jean is referencing to some of the French soilders as “marauder”, one of the Brits even said “ I saw them killing their own!” Or something like that after we encounter more French solider in Roscoff

I think that scared French soldier (warning: this may or not be right) might actually be one of us that encounter Jean at Catacombs. Considering we were French at Catacombs, the scared French soldier’s hair is actually in the game, and the player can use it. SO.. That scared French soldier was one of us at Catacombs. And we kill him or let him live.
I think what happened in roscoff is that French soldiers were told to evacuate civilians as the blight was near them but when it came they weren’t prepared and still had civillians in the town,they tried defending but failed,maybe jean was the last one infected as clearly he could of escaped if he had a key to the gate but didint seem like he had one.
People clown jean for being a coward but he stayed till the end just to help evacuate the town and in catacombs he probably told the artillery to fire to help us he really just wanted everyone to be safe not caring for his self being
