Baby reindeer details sexual assault+abuse through the lens of a male protagonist and woman predator. What tremendous acting by the actress playing Martha by displaying a roller coaster of emotions. We find that Donny and the stalker are both seeking validation from one another, but in different ways-him needing an ego boost to feed his fledgling career as a comedian and Martha seeking genuine companionship + desire. Deranged as it sounds, Martha was only Donny’s consistent friend, but it’s a true story that challenges masculinity, trauma, and self-loathing meets shame.
For me he engaged way too much. He needed the ego boast especially when he knows that woman was crazy. He wanted the love and attention especially the laughs.
@@AshleyMillerTV Yeah you did said it after lol , I jump the gun a little while sending this comment mid premier of the video. I totally see your point about "I May Destroy You" having better pacing. "Baby Reindeer" did feel like it dragged a bit and probably could've worked as a movie instead of a series. I really appreciated the representation of the trans woman, and how it delved into his dad's childhood trauma and the grooming aspect, even at his age. But there's something about Michaela Coel’s work in "I May Destroy You" that feels super personal and just connects more, maybe because I'm a big fan of hers.
I actually really really enjoyed this show. It's based on the actual main actor (Donny) real name Richard Gadd. I am a huge UK Tv Show and Movie fan so I am familiar of with his previous works. Richard also went out of his way to change the real person who assaulted him to Martha because he did not want fans to find out who she was and a couple of other things. He also really did not want her to get jail time and wanted her to get help for her mental issues. The real Martha can sit down with her lawsuit because she will not win. This is Richards true story and he is the writer and creator. I applaud him because that monologue he did when he started crying and saying he was raped out loud to his audience broke me. It takes real courage to re-live you trauma like that. Sure he could have done some things so the situation did not escalate, but no person deserves to be violated or stalked like that. I thought the acting was on point and the lady playing Martha was amazing in that role. I know some of her previous works as well. I wished you could have enjoyed it more, but I understand it just may not be for some people. Keep up the good work Ashley. One love.
it’s fascinating how what appeals to one person doesn’t appeal to another. i liked “baby reindeer.” i thought “i may destroy you,” the show starring michaela coel that you referenced (which she wrote), was ok and didn’t enjoy it as much. and i like michaela coel a lot! she’s talented so i understood why that show earned so much acclaim. and yet, i very much preferred michaela’s series “chewing gum” that aired on netflix back in 2016/17. maybe i’ve (subconsciously) avoided seeing more stories about a black woman’s trauma because i’ve seen so many and would rather not confront more of it, being a black woman myself. might be why I enjoyed the absurd and light hearted comedy of “chewing gum” so much more. michaela wrote and starred in that too. i’d watch that again any day over “i may destroy you” (and “baby reindeer”).
I thought it was absolutely riveting. Richard Gadd is sexy as hell and alot of guys more on the hetero spectrum explore their sexuality in different ways. We don't see the sexual fluid type straight boy story very often. All of the acting was so good. I was enthralled..Life can be awkward and imperfect.
I was watching it and at some points I was like wtf am I watching 😂😂😂 then it finally clicked with the Harvey Weinstein dude. Martha was bat ish crazy!!!!!!!
Donny and the rapist guy both worked together to produce/write the stage show version of the story, then it went to broadway before the Netflix series. That’s after you see Donny agreeing to work with him on the show.
You never know what will happen or how you will react once you've been placed into certain situations. Victim blaming is never okay and he seemed to have both a fawn and a freeze response which is very common with victims
this show was very interesting to me, but one episode, i had to skip sooo many parts i wont lie, he was blowing mine when it came to Martha bc for various reasons, but seeing how it may have started for him brought a lot of understanding. trauma and its effects are so wild edit: facts, i was super blown when he didnt tell the cops about Martha attacking Teri. especially when the guy specifically asked if there was violence like...
Long story short, over hyped, I could not sympathize with Donny, he caused this as much as she did low key and in all honesty, making the series while that crazy woman is still alive is kind of causing it again. It was frustrating to watch for me as someone with similar trauma, I hate when it's used as an excuse for not using common sense, he put his loved ones at risk, I just couldn't feel bad for him, I felt bad for his family and loved ones and especially Teri. I don't think it's victim shaming to say that telling this crazy woman what she wants to hear and shielding her from being reported is on him and he is partially responsible for what happened to himself and his loved ones by doing that.

Yep, people weren't ready for that role reversal with the man being the one traumatized.
I personally liked it. But there was another one on HBO called I May Destroy You. The actress from Chewing Gum wrote it and it won an Emmy.
That’s the show I mentioned. I liked that one better than this one
I May Destroy you was SO good
@@AshleyMillerTVme too! I was thinking about rewatching it.

I loved it may destroy you!!
This show made me feel extremely validated as a victim and him showing the aftermath of what he went through is very real
The drug escalation was wild
I was like, wth is going on here, but it does happen.
Hi
Based on the actor/creator’s story/experience. It was hard to watch at times. This was a trauma dump.

I enjoyed the show too better than I May Destroy You.
I finished it in one day. Baby Reindeer was extremely sad for
for me😢
When he knocked on that man door I just knew it was for murder
I finished it all in one day
I still haven’t seen bird box. People hyped it up so much I couldn’t even be bothered.
The main character is the victim in real life I heard. He wrote it.
It is his real life. I felt he was so brave for telling his story
@@imnotvalerie563he definitely deserves a side eye😒

This show was INSANE!
seems you can be stalked but also be a flawed person

You said this movie sucked but from your review it sounds intriguing asf… I’m going to watch it this weekend.
That's the power of Ashley. ❤😂
The show was really good. It's a mixture of hilarity and trauma with secondhand embarrassment.
Whew chile that movie was insane to me
Hey Ashley girl. This was a weird one lol. It's not great, but I can say that I enjoyed it. 😂😂😂
This was s crazy good.
Watching this was so hard because you dont wanna victim blame, but sooooo many things were preventable. Idk, I'm torn.

You should check out the show Dreaming Whilst Black. It’s like the male version of Insecure
Great show
this was surprisingly interesting
Ashley can talk you about the current season on seeking sister wives 😭

I’m sorry I didn’t feeling any sympathy for that man. He knows that woman was off but continue to engage with her.
this was based off the actors real life
I didn't hate it but didn't love it either.

Somebody recommended it to me. I did not watch yet. Now I am hmmm....................
please do 'Spell' with Loretta Devine & Omari Hardwick
I liked this. By the end I felt bad for both of them. The real Martha Scott probably should've kept her mouth shut lol
Do a movie corner for fatal attraction please
Ashley!!!! I had to watch it in 5 parts-each time thinking it would pick up. I didn’t like it.
It was weird. I finished it…but it was indeed weird
It’s giving an low budget cable guy

the show was not entertaining to me, i didn’t finish the 2nd episode. i hate wasting my time 😂
I fell asleep on episode 6 and didn't finish watching
@@modeltunleashed you almost made it, i think its 8 eps 😂
I disagree….I thought it was great especially when you realize it’s based off his real life
I didn't like it either, but loved I may destroy you.
I’m so happy you watched and reviewed this!!! I was waiting for someone that looks like me to give their take on it!🤎
