  • This is an update on the problems we are having with the Springfield 911 .380. It's still failing to feed, even after almost 200 rounds and field stripping and lubricating.

    On Friday evening, September 20, 2019, I sent an email to Springfield Customer Service detailing the problems with the 911. On Monday the 23rd I received an email and return authorization from Springfield. On Tuesday the 24th the gun is going back. I'll provide updates as I get more info from Springfield.

      Mine returns home today. Same issues but much more severe. I attempted using 13 different cartridges of various brand, bullet weight/style over a period of six months. I kept hoping for a "break-in" to be complete but never so much as had 3 rounds In a row fire without a fail to feed.
      Springfield emailed the invoice showing they recut & polished the feed ramp, polished the chamber, and replaced the extractor. We shall see.
      On the brass pick up, I keep an old king size sheet that I carry out to my backyard range. I'm too old and beat up to bend over 50-100 times a shooting session. Lol.

      Brandon, it's nice that Springfield polished the chamber and the feed ramp, though I don't think that's where the problems is. The fact that they replaced the extractor helps confirm that it was part of the problem. I wonder if they replaced the extractor spring at the same time? I am looking forward to your next range report on the 911, once you get it back.
      Amen on picking up brass. I spend way too much time on my hands and knees doing that and I still miss about 1/3 of my brass. I tried a large tarp, but in just a few hours it turned all the grass brown under it. I have plans for the range next spring that should make life easier.

      II need to do more extensive shooting to determine its long term reliability, so this is just preliminary.
      I shot Winchester White box FMJ 50 rounds, Sig V Crown 25 rounds, Remington Golden Saber 50 rounds, no problem. It won't chamber anything with an XTP bullet. I can't tell if the extractor isnt catching the rim causing it to jam on the feed ramp, or if it's jamming on the feed ramp causing it to kick the rim out of the extractor. Either way as long as I have ammo options I'm okay. I'll shoot my XTP ammo in my Beretta 84.
      Thanks for the response and the video. You are Good people.

      Brandon, you are much more patient than I am. I’m glad your gun is running better now, but it should feed anything, including the XTP bullets. In my out-of-the-box video I ran one mag of the Hornady XTP and had 2 failures. I’ll run more through it when I get mine back.
      As always, thanks for your comments.

      I sent mine back to Springfield and received it a few days ago. Just went to the range and had only one jam (ammo issue). I put about 60 rounds through it. They polished the feed ramp and all the other things said here along with cutting the extractor. I think the main issue was the extractor. I was also having an issue where my takedown pin was walking it's way out of the firearm before I sent it back.

    Wow what a pain....Hope you get the issue sorted out with the manufacturer.

      I sent an email to the Springfield warranty center. I’m confident they will fix it. I’ll pin a comment as things progress.

    Other than lightly sanding and polishing some on all the rails,even though my 911 worked perfectly,I couldn't resist and pulled the extractor and even though it worked correctly the bottom of the extractor is sharp edged not like a 1911 that is rounded and smooth so I filed the bottom edge and sanded smooth for the round to load easier....and still works great...

      I’m confident that I could fix the problem in less than an hour, but Springfield needs to know about the problems and keep a record of them - and fix their own problems. This will be my second Springfield to go back out of the 4 I own.

      Ed, I agree. However, TH-cam is refusing to monetize videos for no reason at all and giving strikes for the smallest infraction - or no infraction at all - sometimes a year after posting and without any explanation and without any recourse or appeal, so many of us are just being cautious.

    I own this pistol and can tell you it will not fire Fiocchi ammo. It's my understanding that the Fiocchi casing rim is out of spec. The ammo that my pistol LOVES is PPU Pistol Line. I also fires very well with Aguila. Never had a feed issue with either one.

      There are many reports of ammo sensitivity fin the 911, though other similar guns (Kimber Micro, Sig P238, Colt Mustang) seem to be able to better handle a wider variety of ammo.

    Any update? I recently purchased one and have about 300 rounds through it. It refuses to feed any ammo that the rim has a depth greater than .045 which is the upper limits of the tolerance. It has everything to do with the rim depth from my experience. Sellier Bellot, Browning Court, and Fiocchi when measured are greater than .045. All feed poorly. Winchester Service Grade feeds 100% after 150 rounds. Also is very cost effective. No issues at all with Critcal Defense, but testing gets very expensive with these rounds.

      Michael, after getting it back from Springfield I put 150 rounds of mixed ammo through it without any feeding issues. I had one failure where the hammer dropped, but there was no firing pin strike. I still don't know what caused that. Below is the link to my follow-up video. I hope you have a great 2020.

    Another brand causes you to seek customer service. Is this just the norm in a MIM world or do the manufacturers just not concern themselves with customer satisfaction. In a world where one brand seems to dominate, you'd think they'd be working a little harder to shine!

      @RidersRange  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Henry, I don’t think the issues I’ve had (Mossberg MC-1s, Dan Wesson PM-C, and now this Springfield) are related to MIM. I’m just guessing, but I’d say trying to do more with less, rushing a product to market (but not as bad as the Remington R51 issue), cutting back on final inspection, no test firing, and being willing to accept a certain percentage of returns (cost/benefit analysis) are all parts of the problems these days.

    That has to,be frustrating. My Sig P938 and P238 have external extractors. I’m sure Springfield will try to fix it. Looking forward to see if it gets fixed.
    P.S. I wouldn’t mind a 4 gun comparison. 👍👍👍👍

    • @RidersRange

      Thanks for weighing in, Frank. Looks like I’ll be working on a four-gun video, once the 911 is working right. And I checked my P238 again and it has an internal extractor, but my 938 has an external, as do Sig 1911s, yet both my Kimber Micros - .380 and 9 - have internal. Shouldn’t make any difference. I have 7 1911s with external extractors and they all work just fine. I’ll pin a comment on the 911 as I get info from Springfield.

      Sounds like a great video! My P938 was in my nightstand, and I was too lazy to look in the safe at the P238.

    everyone, stop buying these mini 1911s.. by luck if you get one that works, most likely you'll forget to thumb that small deadmans switch off when your life is on the line!

    • @RidersRange
      @RidersRange  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Tom, pistols with a manual safety aren't for everyone, and not all of the micro-pistols have problems.
      As to the "deadmans switch", it's all about training and practice. There are many folks who carry guns with a thumb safety and are very proficient with them under stress, but if you aren't comfortable with a pistol that has a manual safety, by all means, don't carry one.
      As to the reliability of micro-guns, yes, I have had problems with the Springfield 911 .380 and I wouldn't be comfortable trusting my life to it - yet. However, my Kimbers (Micro .380 and Micro 9) and Sigs (P238 and P938) have all run fine. I train with them and trust my life to them on the occasions when I select one for carry.

    These little 1911 wanna be are trash.. My micro kimber is the same thing. Just useless

    • @RidersRange
      @RidersRange  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Toral, my Kimber Micro .380 and my Sig P238 both run fine. This isn't a brand new idea, so there is no reason Springfield couldn't have done it right.
