    I just want to thank you for these tutorials. We're doing a PTA carnival next week at my kids' school, we couldn't find anyone to do professional face paint to fit our budget (I don't blame them, between the supplies and the experience they should be able to get paid). So I'm doing it. I've done Halloween makeup and beauty makeup, so I ordered some face paint with good reviews and I'm going to try my best, but I'm watching as many tutorials as I can until the paints Aubree and then I'll practice on my kids and their friends as much as I can.

      @@SophiesTipps No problem i had a good halloween costume it wasn't pro quality quite yet but its not that bad either. I feel next time all use the brushes as the crayon based face makeup rips the underlayer paints (and you just cann't regulate the detail that i see with your brushes... I imagine the brushes allow you to paint layers more easily without ripping the under paint.

    I really love your tutorials, the best of the best. Practically I filled my cart during your videos play, to be sure to buy the most similar things.
    I really hope that you could continue in near future with new interesting videos, maybe especially about "tricks" to achieve best results, and maybe difference between different color brands and how to understand possible errors.
    For example, I saw that if I try to paint with black on a white sponged background, no problem. The opposite was almost impossibile... white paint became almost gray and not covered in any way the black background. But you often use white paint with brush on dark color and result is always perfect...

    • @SophiesTipps
      @SophiesTipps  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thank you so much for your kind words that mean a lot to me. Now that the interest for face painting seems to be picking up a bit - after the long pause during COVID - I think that I will try posting new tutorials in the next weeks/months. So, thank you for your suggestions that I will definitely keep in mind.
      Regarding your question re: the black/white issue, the answer to that is simple and tricky at the same time but basically it comes down to one main thing: letting the base dry (almost completely) before applying another color on top, unless you want to blend both layers together, of course. Tricky I know, because when you have to paint a design in under 5 minutes, it is not always easy to just wait around after each layer or color. The trick is to break down a design in steps and figure out which color to lay down first and which areas to follow with. Some colors/areas will take a bit longer to dry and have to be left alone for a few minutes. In the meantime you can work on other areas that need immediate attention because some blending is involved, or you can start working on some detailing in other areas of the design. It's about finding the sequence and timing. Also, if your sponge is too wet when you apply the base, the paint you applied will take a lot longer to dry. So try to put the minimum amount of water (just a couple of drops at the very tip of the sponge) and add more "dryer" layers on top of one another, rather than a single wet layer. Hope this helps answer your excellent question.
      Another thing is, don't be fooled by what you see on TH-cam videos.... 😉 hahaha, it always looks "perfect" on screen but there is a lot of editing involved and no time pressure either to make everything look good. Face painting in a real situation looks different and that's totally OK. Don't worry, the kids do not worry about small mistakes because they don't even notice them. Thanks again and all the best to you! 🧡

    • @SophiesTipps
      @SophiesTipps  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Caitlin Caughlan I also used to use a spray bottle to spritz either the cake or the sponge but I was often frustrated that the coverage was too wet on the skin and that it was difficult to achieve nice blending (and my fingers were always full of paint after a while!). I learned the trick that I showed in the video from a face painting course I took with the Wolfe brothers. They recommended wetting only the corner of the sponge with a tiny little bit of water. I was skeptical at first but realised that it the quality of my designs improved significantly after trying it myself. It's a great way to control the humidity on the sponge depending on the thickness of coverage desired.

    Awesome! I do a lot of volunteer facepainting, but have only used the small 'Snazzaroo' kits available at Wal*Mart. Enjoyed this educational tutorial and plan to watch the rest you have available to learn more! Thank you!

    • @SophiesTipps
      @SophiesTipps  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Snazarroo is actually quite good but has two main drawbacks in my opinion: 1) it is not possible to use it for line work because the coverage is too thin. 2) It melts in high temperatures which can be a problem in some countries (but not really where I live). On the positive side, Snazaroo is quite cheap (in Europe), easy to wash off and it is one of the safest face painting brand around. Feel free to ask if you have any questions. Good luck and thanks for your feedback!

    Okay so might be a dumb question, but when painting at a birthday party would you use a new sponge for each child?

    • @SophiesTipps
      @SophiesTipps  4 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      No, not dumb at all, I was wondering the same thing when I first got started. As far as I am concerned the answer is no, I use one sponge per color and re-use it on each child. If I notice that a child is ill or has an allergy of some sort, I would suggest to paint on his/her arm or do a glitter tattoo instead. Using a new sponge on each child doesn't prevent the potential spread of bacteria or viruses anyway because the pots of colors are being reused for each child. It is better to make sure that each child is healthy and to sanitise the kit thoroughly when coming home. As long as the Corona virus is still around, I have decided to put my face painting activities on hold in order to avoid any contamination of my kit. Hope this helped a little bit.

      @megan9009 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SophiesTipps thank you so much! It absolutely does! One of my main concerns was what to tell parents if they question it, but explaining that the pots are being used regardless makes sense!

    I really enjoyed this tutorial. I have some questions about 'painting' the glitter. Is it easy to rinse off the brush? Do you have a separate container for rinsing them? I like the idea of applying it with a brush, I just would like to know how you work with it in regards to switching colors.

    • @SophiesTipps
      @SophiesTipps  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Kim Carr Thanks for your feedback! I personally use two water glasses. One to rinse off darker colours and one for white only. After using loose glitter on my brush, I usually rinse it off in my "white only" water glass. I don't have a separate glass for that. The glitter comes off very easily in water and floats on the water surface. But it's such a minimal amount that you won't even notice it's there at all. For hygienic reasons, I anyway recommend changing the rinsing water at least every hour when face painting at a busy event.

    Your videos are wonderful & I like how u made different ones for each important aspect of learning to face paint. my 3 year old daughters class had a fall festival yesterday and i volunteered 4 the face painting. I've got years of experience with craft painting so I thought I surely face painting Lil kids cheeks wouldn't be much different. her teacher bought the paint so I decided 2 use what she got instead of going to a hobby store to buy some a bit more professional. .. needless 2 say it was a disaster. The paint was awful & everything looked terrible. I was so embarrassed. I wish I'd seen your videos first. now I hope I have an opportunity to do this again. Thanks for your feedback. Don't get discouraged and keep going. It is true that some paints don't have the right texture and pigmentation and it can be extremely frustrating to use them and not see any good results. But not to worry, if you get quality paints (even a small palette), you will see the difference right away. Good tools and lots of practice, that's the key. Good luck!

    • @SophiesTipps
      @SophiesTipps  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I bought the one you see in this video from an online face painting shop, so I guess it was made for that. The "skin" is very smooth and has a kind of velvety feel to it. I then bought other heads that are made for hairstyling but they weren't as good because the plastic was shiny and slippery and the face paint didn't really adhere to it. The trick that I used is to first put a layer of powder foundation on the head before painting over it. That seems to help and also prevents staining the plastic underneath. Hope this helps! Thanks for your feedback 🤗

      +cuteasabugcreations That's "Hot Pixie Pink" from Mama Clown and available on sillyfarm.com. This glitter is iridescent and, although it provides the perfect sparkle on girly face painting designs, it would not work well for glitter tattoos. For the tattoos, it is best to use more opaque glitter colors - not irridescent ones. For info, the pink glitter that I use on my glitter tattoos is from Ybody.

    so glad I've found you! how do you sanitize in between kiddos?

    • @SophiesTipps
      @SophiesTipps  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't. This is not possible when working at an event where 15 children or more are waiting in line. I do however follow strict hygiene rules including, never painting a child who appears to be sick or who has any kind of skin irritation, I don't use a brush to paint the lips, I regularly change my water and thoroughly clean my brushes during my break and I completely clean all my equipment, tools and paints in between jobs. When I work at a hospital, I use a different sanitised brush for each child and never dip it twice in the paint, I also follow other hygiene rules that are much more drastic but this is the one exception because children usually have immune deficiency.

      Hi Sandra, thank you for you lovely message. I got started just like you, by volunteering in the local kindergarten and school and offering my services for free just to get enough practice. Don't worry about being "perfect". Kids are very forgiving and do not pay attention to details as adults do. Lots of bright colors and glitter will make them happy. You will improve you skills with time, I promise. Here is another video you might want to watch if you haven't already: th-cam.com/video/7YklPFc_Ees/w-d-xo.html At the end, I show a face painting kit for beginners who do not (and should not) spend too much money on their kit. it should be useful to you. It is best to add more and more items and colors to your kit along the way rather than buy too much right away (this was a mistake I made!). You can also have a look on facepaintforum.com, I think that some people sell or swap their supplies there. Best of luck to you! 😘

    When you use loose glitter, do you ever use any kind of adhesive or sealant, or do you find that the glitter sticks well enough to the paint/with water? I wouldn't use an adhesive on kids, but it seems like it could be helpful for adult designs, especially during warm weather. It gets very hot here in Texas during festival months.

    • @SophiesTipps
      @SophiesTipps  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** Oh you really shouldn't worry about that but rather how to get rid of it once it's been applied! When I face paint, a little bit of glitter sometimes lands on my own face and even after taking off my makeup and rubbing like crazy... it's still there, haha! Glitter is "bombproof" on wet skin. Warm weather is not a problem unless the air is very dry too. Glitter will not stick if the paint has dried up completely, that's why it's important to "catch" the right moment to apply it. If you wait until your design is completely finished with all the small details, etc., the paint might have dried up already and it's then too late for glitter - it will just fall off on the floor... If this happens, you can spritz a tiny bit of water over the desired area (without ruining your design, of course) and re-apply glitter over it with a poofer bottle I would definitely not use any kind of glue or sealant on the skin - even for adults. It's toxic and dangerous. When I paint on arms, shoulders legs or on the cleavage area, I sometimes use a bit of hairspray over my design if it's too dry (but not on the face!). Glitter holds really well on hair spray too. Hope this helps!

      Thanks for the tips. As someone who's interested in SFX, I won't be able to stay away from using adhesives all the time, but if glitter adheres to the wet paint well enough, I can avoid using them in face painting, specifically. FYI, there are specific sealants (spray on, and those that can be mixed with makeup) that are safe to use on the face, if you ever decide you want to seal a design on or near someone's face.

    I have a question. Are you using Mehron Starblend as well? I will be face painting in hot and humid climate, so I am thinking it may be better to use those for the background and blending instead of the wet/waxy colours (as they are like pressed powder). Would you agree with that and how has your experience been in regards to blending and applying them. I have also heard that many face painters prefer to use Starblend for boys as it is faster to apply and they don´t like the stickiness on the skin ... Would very much appreciate your comments on this ;).
    Many thanks, Iris
    PS: Which of the colours are not so harsh on the skin? I have used my little daughter (3) as a model and I have noticed little dots appearing on her cheeks, so I am wondering whether it is due to the colours. This is another reason I have been thinking of using Starblend as the powder is possibly not as strong on the skin as the wet colours?!

      +Iris CR Yes, I am occasionally using Starblends, especially the black to add shadows but I don't have a lot of experience with them. I only have 3 colors: black, white and red. I've actually been using the black Starblend in my recent 3D spider video: th-cam.com/video/ZqxjLTrzJDM/w-d-xo.html
      I live in a cold and mostly dry climate so I don't really have the problem of high humidity - except a few days in summer but I can cope with that. I don't usually use Starblends on large areas but you are right, some face painters, living in tropical areas, do use them a lot (such as Marcella Murad or Denise Cold) and they manage to create really beautiful designs with them.
      The application is different to regular face paints - I use a smoothie blender to press and drag the color onto the skin, there is a little bit of fallout but not too bad. The effect is mat and dry. I sometimes use the white and red for my spiderman faces because some boys don't like wet products applied to their face.
      Although all serious face paint brands are safe for the application on the skin, I've heard that the safest one on the market is Snazaroo but it's not available everywhere, I think. Mehron might be pretty good too because it doesn't have wax in it but it is perfumed so this might be a problem for sensitive skin types. My assumption would be that the brands containing Wax (Diamond FX, Wolfe, Tag, Cameleon,...) are harsher on the skin but I cannot guarantee that because I am not a chemist... Try to do a test on your daughter's arm or do an allergy test at the doctor's office. I hope I could help you a little bit...

    Hi Sophie. Thanks for sharing so much with us. Do you know where I can get a face graphic to practice on? Like the one you have with the plastic sheet over it (i have the plastic). Thank you x

      +Daniella Orkin I get this question a lot :) I couldn't find the pictures I use on the internet any more but I suggest you do a search on Google-Images with the keywords "Natalie Portman bold". You will find a lot of good pictures that could work well. You then just need to print them to the size of a normal face and laminate them. Voilà! 😃
