  • Do electric cars have a break-in period? Is it smarter to buy or lease an EV? And is it better to be stranded overnight in a gas vehicle, or an electric car? We answer these and other EV-related questions on this episode, including how hot summer temperatures affect an EV's driving range, what happens in an EV right before the battery dies, and what resources are available for those that want to learn more about electric vehicles before they take the plunge.

You didn't answer that last question properly. They asked "is there enough juice to run the hazard lights? and "Can it be switched into neutral?" This has nothing to do with the main high voltage battery and everything to do with the 12V system on the car. If the customer ran the car past zero miles remaining, all the way to when the car actually stops and won't move, the 12V will still power all the cabin features like hazard lights, windows, locks, and gear selector.

I agree with you. Not only they didn't answer but also answered the question unrealistically.
      I have a 4-year-old mobile device (cell phone) and a 5-year-old laptop.
They both no longer have mobility capacity (without carrying the charger) since the devices can be shut down as themselves even if they have some remaining. (when it is below 20~30%, it can suddenly shut down based on the app or program). Plus, the replacement of the battery is very expensive.
EV is like a giant electric device.
      for the other questions,
Leasing vs buying an EV: They must consider the battery issue after 3 or 4 years from the purchase.
Extreme temperature: The reviewers and testers are testing with the new vehicle so they can be careless about what happens when the battery gets old/weak.

In a Tesla the hazard lights and computer are operated by a separate 12v battery, not the high voltage battery. So the answer is yes.

Regarding the viewer question on leasing versus buying EVs, don’t you need to purchase the vehicle to receive the $7500 tax credit which is currently the one that is available? My impression was that if you lease a vehicle you are out of luck. No? Thanks for a great show.

From what I understand if you lease the manufacturer gets the tax credit. You could possibly use that in the negotiations. I think I read VW had offered a $7500 bonus for lessors on the 2021 ID.4.

Thanks for adding those thoughts to the conversation. In my own shopping experiences so far the impression sales people have given is that if you lease the vehicle you lose that tax credit. I’ll keep my eyes open for other possibilities.

@@dennisjones8906 We salesmen only think of selling or leasing a car to a potential buyer, not taking the tax credit away, tax credits help to sell a car! The salesman or the dealer cannot get or take away tax rebates, as it applies to the buyer, not the seller. The $7,500 credit in most brands are mandatory to use on the leases. If you pay cash or finance you request your $7,500 tax rebate in your income tax return. Simple and easy. Lastly, Tesla no longer has the $7,500 tax rebate, as the law applies only to manufacturers that sell less than 200,000 units.

I was one of that tiny fraction of people who have an EV that runs out of power! I got to one charger with 0% but the charger was offline and did not work! I called AAA and they brought flat bed towed me to another charger and then that charger didn't work either. I had to call electrify America and they had to reboot the chargers for 30 min and then I was able to charge. The whole ordeal took about 4 hours...

It's accurate to say that cars don't rust out nearly as quickly as they used to. But rust is most definitely still a problem anywhere they salt the roads, including in my town. The problem is that this rust tends to be more insidious. The bodies tend not to rust out too badly anymore, but the frames and other steel components definitely do. I wash my vehicles weekly (as long as the car wash isn't frozen) to stave off the tinworm, but judging by the examples I commonly see, I'm more the exception than the rule.

11:01 it's a matter of luck or good planning to keep you fuel tank full or in this case, charge your battery fully before making a long highway drive, even if you don't need it full (it doesn't weigh more when it's full).

  • @joeb4294

Regarding the battery replacement question and corrosion killing cars, it seems like new cars are now built better to avoid having rust eating through the wheel wells. Many cars have thick plastic cladding around the wheel wells (but I wonder if there is still rust eating through and it is just hidden for longer behind the plastic).
For EVs specifically, I believe that Tesla Models S and X both have aluminum bodies, while the BMW i3 has plastic body panels over a carbon fiber monocoque and an aluminum chassis - so there are some options that are likely less vulnerable to corrosion. Of course, these materials can also lead to more expensive repairs if the car gets into an accident.

I am the person stuck at that event, what I saw is few Teslas once pulled over road asides, they stuck there.(P85D, Model 3 and Model X) My guess is they are more displacement than normal cars made it harder to getting out of situation. My experience when even happen I have 3/4 gas of full tank. I need turn on air conditioning every half hour, keep it on for 10mins and turn it off. We have blankets in car and we are four guys in an Nissan Rogue S. Outside temp is like -8 degree C. We were lucky stuck at near one one exit so we can walk 2 mile in local target and other convinent store. But 18 hours was pretty hard time even we had sneakers in cars since we were on road trip.

What they failed to mention I think in buying versus leasing for EVs is that the markert still doesn't know how to value the residuals on them yet. Thus we do not have enough data on how the value would hold up over time if you were to buy. Also, if the dealers are putting in a huge buyout/residual value in their leases then your monthly payment drops because you are paying for a smaller fraction of the car, they failed to mention this. I am no way for or against Leasing, but these are the things I am thinking about.
Also, as far as the tax credits, I think people are confused. It's a tax credit not a deduction/rebate. So if you buy an EV you probably won't get the full $7500 at tax time. For instance, for me I owed $6k in taxes this year, so if I had bought an EV i would not get the full $7500 but only the $6000. A tax credit only takes you down to $0. So if you owed $1500 then you would only get that back, and if were due a refund then you would get nothing. I think the info out there is misleading to people.

You totally deflected the heater in traffic question. The average ICE tank has 7 times the energy of a BEV battery. If I had to choose a vehicle to be stuck in a snow drift for a week, it would be my F350 with 1,100 kWh of energy in the tank (29 gallons of diesel) over any BEV currently on the market. Plus, it has REAL leather, unlike most BEVs that use fake leather to cut corners.

I have to take exception to your comments that in the northern pattitudes cars don't rust anymore. I have seen repeated reports from folks like SavageGeese, Deboss (Canada) Straight Pipes (Canada) Truck King (Canada) all showing rust in as early as a year, also PickUp Truck +SUV who is in the upper Midwest (Iowa I believe) reporting rust issues. So i think it is fair to say, if you live in northern latitudes you are either garaging your car all winter, 5-6 months a year or dealing with rust. Also, What Car recently did a mild winter test and showed 25-30 percent range declined on average. Not great. D

Only Nissan Leafs have experienced significant battery degradation, and that is because the company elected not to include active thermal management of the battery. Nearly every other EV on the market has thermal management to keep the pack within the temperature range where lifespan is maximized.

Why would you run out of charge in a EV? I mean you charge your EV nightly or every few days as needed but you leave home fully charged. You don't drive over 300 miles daily. Are not these EV Charging Stations networked and serviced? Don't you use a EV charging app for Stations? I used to fill up my Ride every two weeks, twice a month.... I'm sure if I get EV's I won't run out of charge. I hope these EV charging Stations are Networked for service and upgraded for L2 and L3 charging.

My wife charges her Kona EV every 2 - 3 weeks depending on how far she drives. Like everything else that is rechargeable-battery operated, it's probably wise to keep the charge between 20 & 80%. I can't think of one EV these days that needs charging every night, unless it is being driven to its capacty every day.

What makes you think everyone wants an EV? They're not only expensive but out of reach for the average person, not to mention the fact they are more polluting long term that a gasoline vehicle. Yes charging is only about $20 now but when they don't have the money they're getting now from gas tax to pay for road maintenance and upgrades etc where do you think they're going to get it. From raising the cost of charging to $100.00 or more.
