The gearbox is the second stage in the transmission system, after the clutch. It is usually bolted to the rear of the engine , with the clutch between them. Modern cars with manual transmissions have four or five forward speeds and one reverse, as well as a neutral position.
Cars need transmissions because of the physics of the gasoline engine. ... The transmission allows the gear ratio between the engine and the drive wheels to change as the car speeds up and slows down. You shift gears so the engine can stay below the redline and near the rpm band of its best performance.
Most modern gearboxes are used to increase torque while reducing the speed of a prime mover output shaft (e.g. a motor crankshaft). This means that the output shaft of a gearbox rotates at a slower rate than the input shaft, and this reduction in speed produces a mechanical advantage, increasing torque.
To be very precise, Gearbox is a mechanical device used for torque increase/decrease via speed reduction/increase. It consists of two or more gears with one of the gears driven by the motor. The output speed of the gear box will be inversely proportional to gear ratio

I have baleno Alpha petrol .I am facing issue about clutch pedal.
mai jab 2000 rpm ke upar gear shift karta hu tab to clutch pedal thodasa hard ho jata hai .mai service center me leke gaya tha unhone clutch cable ko lubricate kia but problem not yet solved. aur jab mai 3rd to 2nd gear shift karta hu to neutral karne ke bad left push karke down karta hu to hook mai takane jaise lagata hai . what is the problem exactly . feel difference between shifting gear above and below 2000 rpm on clutch pedal.
