Thanks for the excellent analysis! I agree with you that pumping back out and linking waves is the holy grail of foiling. It is THE main reason I started prone foil boarding. I have been very frustrated trying to learn to pump out so far. Going to try your technique today and see how it goes. Thanks again for taking the time to post the info!

I just got an Axis 1150 and tried your improved pumping technique in the waves, did my first triple combo. Thank you!

@@dominichoskyns9091 I noticed that Kane is lifting his back heel up as he shifts forward. Can you comment on that versus having your feet more parallel. Is your back heel coming up at all?

Here's another good reference for pumping technique as well where Kawika interviews a mechanical engineer on pumping. Go to the 7:00 minute for the interview th-cam.com/video/Kn4VyK4aRUg/w-d-xo.html

Nice analysing of different pump techniques. Have you tried this new technique on both of your wings? There are wings, when you do the push down with both legs, it reacts like a kill switch for the gliding. I can’t wait, when you will make an analysing and visualisation of the pop up on a foil board in a wave. Thanks for sharing.

Hi Peter. I started with the Maliko 280 and when I got better I changed over to the GL240, transferring my technique from the 280 to the 240. Obviously I didn't have much luck with that which is why I started analysing the heck out of it. I completely agree that different wings have different characteristics which is why they need differences in technique. I haven't tried the technique I use with the 240 on the 280 because I'm so stoked with the 240 that i think if I went back to the 280 it would feel sluggish and draggy in comparison and I don't want to spoil my amazing memories of the 280😆

Thanks for super helpful video. I'm at the stage now where I want to progress my foiling and learn how to pump. I'm on a Naish Thrust L 1236cm2 foil (2018) model with a 55cm mast. I'm a competent "normal" surfer (+10 years) and now also able to catch little waves on the Naish foil and have small flights with it on my prone Amundson Customs 4'6" board. Behind the wake boat im able to make little turns in the first wake and also able to surf the second wake and stay there for a while.
I haven't tried any other foils but I have a feeling all the new HA wings would help my progression. I'm 75kg 5'10. From your experience, what kind of wing (in terms of size, aspect) would be a good one to learn to properly pump, surf small waves and start connecting them?
Cheers, appreciate your thoughts as someone who's also gone through the learning curve. Thanks in advance.

Hi Greg. Generally speaking the HA wings are easier to pump. 1200 or 1300cm2 is a good size for prone foiling at your weight. For SUP foiling generally people need a bigger size, such as 1500 or 1600 or even up to 1700 for tiny waves. The smaller sizes are more responsive for sure but are harder to pump, but having said that, ease of pumping depends a lot on the overall design not just the aspect ratio. I find the P180 (1350 sqcm) easier to pump than the NL220 (1500 sqcm) and obviously the NL160 (1300 sqcm) is harder still. The GL140 is the GoFoil HA foil that would replace the IWA, and it's supposed to be awesome in the surf and pumps well too, but I've not used it myself. I'm afraid I don't know anything about the Naish foils so can't comment on which of their models is best for pumping, but if you message one of the Naish dealers they will tell you about the characteristics of each of their models. The Takuma LOL foils are meant to be awesome to surf and really easy to pump, and I know they have a 1300 and 1600. Most people rave about how good the 1300 is for prone foiling. Hope this helps. Feel free to send any more questions my way of you want.
BTW, 55cm is super short for a mast length. 70 - 75cm is considered by most to be a good length for surfing, any shorter than 60cm and you've not got much clearance and breeching becomes a problem. I have a 70cm, 82cm and a 93cm mast and I prefer the 82 for everything - unless it's super shallow and then I'm forced to use the 70. The 93 is strictly for wing foiling and downwinders when there's big swell.

:choking the pump: refers to not allowing the wing to rise enough before beginning the downward pressure, ie you are choking it, not letting the full stroke occur.

step on a trampolin, jump as hard as you can but dont let your upper body moving up and down at all (thats what you want to describe @ 03:50 ? ;-)

  • @djodlight

In my opinion the explanation is too complicated. I think you pump in two steps. One is let the board glide while your body stretches out and the second is lift your knees up, which takes your weight off the board so the board comes up high enough to start the next gliding step
