The link for the Dexcom G6 is now in the description box as well as here: theinsulintype.com/2018/12/11/extending-a-dexcom-g6-sensor/ So sorry it wasn't up right away! This was a scheduled post and I was at work when it went up 😬! Happy Diabetes Awareness Month - love you all 💙!!!
Definitely feel you on wanting a good night's sleep without diabetes stuff happening! I always struggle with resistance and then when my blood sugars slowly get back in range, I then deal with the lows! So I woke up last night in a sweaty haze reaching for my fruitsnacks and dexcom beeping! I am glad you are enjoying your new job and am also happy to see your blood sugars are slowly getting better. Resistance is such a bitch--I get resistance a lot during that time of the month. Brutal time.
Thank you for making these vlogs. My 9 yr old son was diagnosed almost a year ago. I've learned so much from your knowledge and experience and what is coming for him as an adult.
I’d never heard the term “compression low”, but I recognize that pattern on the Dexcom where it just drops precipitously like that and then cuts out. I had no idea it was related to sleeping on the sensor. Thanks!
Omg I’m so happy to have a group of people that can relate ! I am so tired of waking up at night for various diabetic reasons ! Type one 28 years and I am also great full to have the team at Toronto general to help me through it all. Will be starting on the tslim soon. Can’t wait !
Same here throughout the pandemic I was working from home all stress free and happy. Then this Monday I return to the office and missery set it in lol my BG are through the roof I am at 150% basal rate and literally eating no carbs and my BG are always above 160 mg/dl. At home my BG was all normal between 75 to 100 mg/dl all day. Even though is not super high I got used to being in non diabetics range that I feel signs of hyperglycemia at 140 mg/dl. God knows what it would be if I ate high amounts of carbs in the 400s for sure. I even tested very high for ketones at 211. Insane I am so frustrated. I might take a break and go to lantus it had a stronger effect on me.
Hi Michelle. Enjoyed your vlog. Can relate to the interrupted sleep. I have 2 people in my family with DT 1 (daughter and hubby). Hubby gets woken up to deal with his sugar level issues, I deal with my daughter's. Her pump alarm goes off so often but she sleeps through it! It's so loud, don't know how it's possible. So whenever I get an uninterrupted night sleep I feel so rested and on top of the world. Hope you get that feeling soon!
Diabetic Richard I use a Dexcom g6 which I haven’t had for long since I am only on my third sensor. I am 74 years old and type 2 for 35 years now. With the Dexcom I no longer worry about lows at night since it will alert me which is great. I don’t use a pump but do take five shots a day with insulin pens. I think being young helps you a lot. I have had two heart attacks and in 2015 I had a triple bypass but I am doing well now and am retired of course.you and other youtube diabetic I follow have helped me. I see my regular doctor every three months and right now my Endo every six months. The 14 th of this month I am going to meet with a diabetic educator for the first time so if I have issues I might call her for help. Staying positive will always help. My wife is 12 years younger than me and not a diabetic but she helps me keep track of my meds. Thank you for posting on here it really does help us out here.
Hi Michelle! Wow I can relate sleep does not exist anymore, it comes in waves but usually more nights up then not. Hope you can get some rest when you can!
Thankyou Michelle, Thought it was very interesting about false pressure lows. Only last night my freestyle libre was reading 2.9 for quite a while, didn't feel any think like 2.9, just had some Soy milk and went back to bed. Was 6.8 in the morning. So what you said makes sense. Yes I would love to be able to have full night without diabetes causing problems.
I empathise with you on the broken sleep thing. CGM is still too expensive for me in Australia, so I do one or two blood tests during the night to stay in range and manage to wake myself up for these. Guess it’s better than having a hypo or going too high.
I have been able to sleep much better with the Basal IQ (I'm not sure it's available in Canada yet). It catches my middle-of-the-night lows and adjusts my basal rates and I can just sleep right through it! I'm really excited about the Control IQ, which should be coming soon and that will catch my highs as well. I just love my Tandem and my Dexcom! (Type 1 diabetic, diagnosed in 1980) Love your channel!!
I can relate to not sleeping enpugh. Between diabetes and aorking more than full time hours dajly, I bave not shept a full night fpr such a long time I forgot what it feels like. 14÷ hour days tend to be even worse when you are woken up by dexcom alarms in the night.
I feel ya, I sleep the full night without any t1d complications like 1/4 of the time. I really need a good night sleep. The saddest think about that is that a lot of that times I am awake is some fake or unnecessary alarm like you showed... I slept so much better before sensor (but also I was more exhausted because of the bad compensation). :D
I was just contacted by Tandem for the new FDA approved firmware upgrade that makes the T-slim a closed loop system. This means the pump will adjust basal rate based on G6 readings. It will also auto bolus if you are headed toward your high limit. May I suggest you contact Tandem and see if you can get this system. Sounds like it would help you alot. Thanks for the post.
Stephen Lambrecht Yes, I follow the diabetes tech world quite closely :) ... This is called “Control IQ” and it is an incredible algorithm that will help so many people! I live in Toronto Canada, which means Control IQ will need to be approved by Health Canada after FDA approval - a process which takes a long time. We usually get diabetes tech here a couple years after the US. However, we were just approved for Basal IQ! It isn’t as advanced as Control IQ, but a great improvement none the less 😊.
@@MichelleLord Yes, You are correct. I use the Basal IQ and it has stopped my lows so I am very excited about the I-Control. I do have experience with Health Canada on a project called Active-O. Our investor was so pissed off at FDA he introduced the product to Toronto University where it was accepted for clinical trails. The device is an electronic syringe that convert Oxygen into Ozone where it is injected into herniated lumbar discs converting the herniation into water which the body can absorb. The syringe holds 10 cc's of medical grade oxygen which is converted to ozone in a plasma field. Five cc's are injected into the disc and the remaining 5 cc's are injected along the needle withdrawal path to sterilize the wound. We had Health Canada's approval in less than a year. FDA would not accept our data which had a 75% success rate. Go figure.
Does your transmitter's serial number start with 80 or 81? Keep in mind that newer transmitters that start with 8G, 8H, or 22 have much stricter checks for preventing sensor restarts. Just look at the shape of the transmitter. If its top side is fully flat (except for the circular indentation at the broader side), it is an old one. If it has a visible bump at the top, it is a newer one (its codename is "Firefly").
Great :) BTW, I am now doing a trial run with a pump. Can you recommend some of your videos for a guy who has been doing MDI and is new to pumping? Perhaps a video with "best practices" etc. For example, today, I set my new reservoir for the first time fully on my own, without supervision. Got it mostly right, except that apparently, some bubbles did remain at the bottom of the reservoir, because hours later, I saw a long bubble in the tubing.. I uncoupled the tubing without stopping basal when the bubble was close to the coupling, then I did a small bolus while the tubing was uncoupled to get the bubble out, then plugged it back it. Seems to have worked. Is this the right way to do it?
Hi there I'm new and so far I love your videos. And also I have T1D as well . Since I was born and now at the age I am it doesn't get any better to be honest but it's nice to see that there are so many people out there speeding the word and such . And I also deal with high blood sugar quite a lot . So I'm working on that with my ondo as well and yes I also carb count as well and I also use the dexcom G6 and I also use an Omni Pod. But I am also dealing with other health issues that I was also born with that yes most of the time it makes it much much much harder to deal with my T1D . So ya bur anyway if you would like to know more pls feel free to leave me a message ❤ and also one more thing I also deal with alot of diabetic burnouts and brain fog so ya . Oh the life of a diabetic 😅😊
I like watching these videos, you do a good job of explaining somethings that non diabetic can understand. One question. Temporary basal. Does that mean that your increasing the amount of insulin that the pump provides you for a set period of time. Understand that diabetic people don't have it as easy as people think. Thanks for the good content.
A "Temp Basal" is a deviation from what is your "normal" intake of insulin is throughout the day. It can both be an increase or decrease depending on the situation you're adjusting for. You might lower your basal rate if you will be exercising or up your basal rate if you're in a high stress situation.. Knowing how your body reacts to the things in your life will better inform your on how to predict how much insulin you will need.
@@edouardbeauvais so temporary basal has nothing to do with bolusing before eating. Just thinking that if you had increased rate higher than normal it would throw all the numbers out of proportion.
Do you have the clip thing/case on your Tandem that came with it.? It didn't look like it was on yours when you showed your pump going in your pocket. That clip thing puts a hole in clothes eventually for me. I am looking for a better protective case--in case you have any solutions.
Hey Michelle. Been watching you for a while and your videos are awesome! You sorta inspired me to make my own channel about diabetes. More focused on technology than lifestyle don't wanna steal your thunder :p I'm 5 videos in and I'm a little disheartened by the lack of views/likes/subscribers. They're growing but slower than I'd like. Any advice on this? Thanks 😊
Hey! That is awesome! I think my best advice is to make videos that you are passionate about and that make you happy! I never started my TH-cam channel with the intention of having so many subscribers.. it just sort of happened. If your videos help even just one person with T1D, then that's all that matters :).
Wow a temp of 180% the one thing I hate is I reduce with a temporary basil to about 75% when working in the yard and still go low sometimes real fast then you have to stop wait for the BS to rise backup to normal and then it could drop again I feel the frustration all the time with the diabetes there just is no perfection with it. If anyone knows how to get it right please let me know.
I feel as if basal rates change for me constantly. One night is high. Next night is low. Third night is good. Fourth night is anybody's guess. It is soooo hard to know what to do if the only thing consistent is that the blood sugar readings are not. How much do you have to tweek blood sugars. You said your nurse really helped you but will that last? I am assuming you had changed basals already trying to deal with the problems.
My basal rates are actually back to where they were before haha. It helped for a couple weeks, but my insulin resistance has randomly gone away. Who knows what was going on! It's so hard to keep up with blood sugars :(
Wow so cool to find another diabetes channel!!! I'm a new youtuber and I just posted my diagnosis story--check it out if you want! You gained a new subscriber :)

Hey I have type 1 aswell and I wanted to start making videos like you and i was wondering if you have any tips🥰
Just make videos that you enjoy to create, and make you happy! Don't start a channel for the subscribers or views :)

90Duck Libre can also do that... just something to keep in mind.
Yes! Dexcom and Libre can both have these "compression lows". It's definitely something to watch out for!
