CDU leader Friedrich Merz is planning to table tougher motions on migration policy in the Bundestag - even with the possible approval of the AfD. This has drawn criticism from the SPD and the Greens, who are warning of a breach in the firewall with the right-wing populists. Political scientist Werner Patzelt sees this as an “act of desperation” and doubts the credibility of the CDU.
