    I’m just a farmer from Nebraska, USA. I love seeing a new video pop up. I just have a boring rem 700 sps tactical .308 in a Remington hunter stock. I swear it weighs as much as an ar-10 I had in .243. I love dreaming over upgrading to the things you professional shooters use to make it more fun for predator control.

    Goeie video Piet.

    *IF* using a short action. I wouldn't use the SAMMI reamer if you are shooting the heavies. You won't be anywhere near the lands and fit in a magazine. I have been down this road. Then going to the short fb means no shooting factory ammo unless you seat the factory stuff further in the case before it is fired. Again not telling you what to do, just giving you a heads up on what you will find out for yourself.

    Love this video and it encouraged me to build a set up very similar to this.
    Only difference in my build is going to be a MDT ESS Chassis and it will be paired with a Tikka T3x Varmint 24 inch barrel in 6.5 PRC.
    South Africa is very limited to factory rifle availability in 6.5 PRC with a 26 inch barrel, unless I am missing something?
    One request that I do have for a video, and you touched on it in one of your other videos, is 1). What does the process look like for South Africans acquiring new barrels for their actions, 2). Building a fully customized rifle with a separate manufacturer of the bolt action to that of the barrel, as it is in this video, 3). Acquiring/purchasing/importing those parts, and 4). Where to fit or modify it all for assembly?
    I do hope this make sense and I would love to get some feedback or video on it as I I have no clue about it.
    Thank you for what you are doing for this industry (hunting and sport shooting) in RSA.

      You still need to get the barrel to change it...?

    • @Phriqhi
      @Phriqhi 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@taylorbokshowan5713 the thing for me is, i possibly have to change the barrel on a 308. I also want to build a precision rifle, I know he stated in a previous video that it was easier for him to import a custom rifle than to build a custom here. (I wanted some clarity on that) and also whilst building a custom, i dont want to choose a caliber e.g. 7-300 with a much shorter barrel life than possibly another 308. I know that you can get the barrels for 7-11K depending on what you want but if the paperwork and licensing is nearly impossible then i would rather just avoid it. (In my mind sending an Affidavit with your application stating [rifle A and B are identical, A is shot up, please license B that the gunsmith can install B and destroy A] should be sufficient but I have no experience with the system in changing barrels)
      Also my s13 pistol barrel has almost 17K shots through it, if I was to replace that barrel how can I license another barrel on S13 (i should not be able) whilst I still have to get them swapped.

    • @taylorbokshowan5713
      @taylorbokshowan5713 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Phriqhi wow I didn’t know you had to go through that, I’m from Canada and our rules are nothing like what I’m attempting to comprehend. Here a barrel is essentially a steel tube and doesn’t mean anything until it’s connected to an action but even then you can just swap it no problem

    • @Phriqhi
      @Phriqhi 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@taylorbokshowan5713 @Taylor Bokshowan oh sorry i Assumed you are from South Africa XD
      So you are only allowed 1 handgun/pump action shotgun for self defense (section 13) and thats the problem. You need to motivate very hard why you require a certain weapon for a certain task. So for getting a S13 license e.g. you need to prove that you are in danger AND that the police cannot protect you (pro tip they can't really due to being understaffed and underfunded but that does not in itself count as a reason) s15 is for occasional sport shooting and hunting. (A pump action shotgun a handgun or bolt action rifle may be licensed here) you need to still prove that you often go shooting and hunting. This gives you a maximum of 4 weapons combined between s13 and 15 of which they must all be different calibers and only 2 may be handguns. To get more than 4 weapons you need to actively and regularly compete in organized sport shooting events this will also allow you to try and license self-loading firearms.

    • @Phriqhi
      @Phriqhi 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      So in licensing my pistol e.g. for self defense, i have occupied that slot. Thus my new barrel wil not be for self defense but for sport shooting. Although that might not currently be a major problem there are organisations that want to make it a problem hence i would like to try and keep my pistol as a s13

    Nice one Piet! Would be keen to see that setup come to life! My "do it all" build would also be 6.5 PRC but with...
    - MDT ESS Chassis in FDE with carbon fore-end and cheek piece with the Ckye bipod.
    - Defiance Deviant Tactical X/M action. (Maybe I'll consider BAT Machine).
    - Bix 'n Andy trigger
    - Custom machined 24" barrel
    - And lastly, I'll go with the normal Vortex Razor Gen 2 scope
    Perfect do it all rifle, but leaning more towards precision shooting, instead of hunting...
    If I can choose a second rifle, it would be something bigger, like a 7/300wm, 300prc, 300 Norma, in the the MDT ACC chassis and 26" barrel.

    I understand this cartridge if you don’t reload, just want to buy ammo off the shelf and you looking for light magnum performance. The average guy who buys a rifle off the shelf and shoots a few times a year. Otherwise I don’t get it, too long for true short action in anything but the lightest bullets and lacks capacity. I personally would just go up to the 6.5 SS (Sherman Short Mag) or stay with Creedmoor.

    • @Checo1
      @Checo1 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      See the 1st part of the video so you understand why he decided for this cartridge. One of the reasons is what you mentioned , availability to purchase ammo I case reload is not possible.

    • @Ravenrifle
      @Ravenrifle 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Checo1 but what you aren't understanding is he said he wants to shoot the 156 EOLs. They wont shoot worth a crap with the SAAMI chamber. So you go to the short freebore chamber to shoot the heavy bullets.... Once you do that factory ammo will not fit in the chamber without seating the bullet farther into the case, this brings other issues like, possible pressure spikes because the case has a compressed load. This was found out a while back and either Piet knows this already and has addressed it with the smith to use the short freebore reamer or maybe he doesn't and that is why the people that have been down this road are speaking up. I don't want to see the guy spend money, sponsored or not on something that won't do both like he claims it can.

    I also like the idea of the Defiance Badrock.
    The issue with the standard length action is it limits your cartridge length. Not good for the potential held with heavy bullets in the PRC case. X length receivers are great. Then you have the problem of magazines. Only 2 answers I know of. Sako and Defiance.

    This is off of the subject of this video, but I think it might be of interest. I've watched several videos of PRC and NRL matches, and have noted that some competitors use the scope as a handle when going from one location to another. This doesn't seem like a good idea to me as the screws and threads holding the scope to the rings appear pretty small. My rifle is a Savage model 10 in a Oryx chassis and weights over twenty pounds (9.72 kilograms) with scope and magazine. Using the scope as a handle just seems a bit careless. Thanks, Roger

      A steel 6-48 or 8-40 screw each have a clamp loads exceeding 1000lbs. That’s 4 screws for the base and 8 screws total for the scope rings.
      It’s the impact forces you need to worry about, not static forces such as holding by the scope and even those don’t approach the maximum clamp force. Do you have to worry about losing zero? Maybe. Breakage? Unlikely.

    I don’t know why but I’m much better with a 2lb or less single strange trigger by far with a flat shoe and no take up jus lace ur trigger on the finger and have a light crisp break I’ve tried 2 stages such as a ssa-e still prefer my 2lb crisp pull and pretty close to the same as the 2nd stage break unless your using something with a crazy light trigger which I like but not for prs where the recoil can make it a lil easier to break the shot to early I see that as more of a bench rest trigger but I’ll agree it’s a preference thing or a what your used to training with which is why I’m much better with a single

    Well, I’ve watched enough impact to build a 6.5cm. Carbon 6 barrel, defiance anTi X action, razor hd g2, mdt ess 12” forend, CMC flat shoe r700 print trigger, carbon fiber pistol grip. And if MDT ever offers the carbon parts for the ESS again, I want those

    I would be interested to hear how you like the 6.5 SS compared to this PRC. I was looking at the PRC then found Sherman and am thinking of scraping the PRC and move to a 7SS. I have 3 other 7mm rifles and have lots of bullets for it. I like the heavier/longer choices for the 7mm. LMK. :-)

      I can second that, if you have a funny angle/frontal shot... you might want a bit more power, nothing that can't be taken shooting on the right spot. having a good bullet/monolithic is a big advantage. I only hunt with the Peregrine VLR4's now and have not looked back since. Used 143gr ELD-X and the 142gr Nosler Accubonds before. My next rifle will be a 300WSM
