    Smart use of the old railing as your template and making a drill template as well. If you’re using pocket holes screws in visible area and not going to paint the wood, they make plugs that you tap in and cut off flush with a Japanese pull saw, then lightly sand and finish.

    I just got done doing this myself… I actually took my cordless drill put the left and right Screws in drill and screwed it in halfway then I crimped Ends on the railing….Then use the tool to turn them in the rest of the way

      Thanks for this comment. I took this advice and it definitely saved me time because I found it very difficult to tighten these screws into my maple posts.

    Looks good. Sounds like it's good to have an extra screw wrench if yours got stripped. I'm surprised they don't sell a sleeve that you'd hammer into the wood where you have tension on the bottom middle post. I'd worry over time with kids and people hitting it that it would want to cut into the wood.

    • @diywithandrew
      @diywithandrew  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the comment and observations and insights. Yes, the stripping of the cheap tool to tighten into the wood is an issue. I ended up buying this slim wrench to help during the few times we have had to "re-tighten". amzn.to/3s8n5DY Another excellent observation about the pass through on the middle post. After over a year, we have had zero issues with this. The cable doesn't rub or really move at all in there. Thanks again for your comments!

    I like cable railing because you can space it together close. The old railing in my house is spaced pretty far apart, Im afraid my cat will fall and my kids will get stuck in railing. I hope can rock a cable rail look.

    Looked alright before if painted gloss white, but that did make it look more modern and opened up. I'm building a huge deck for a couple that are wanting the stainless steel cable, and I've done several decks before with cable, however was looking for a faster way to do it without it taking me and year and a day considering the posts are 6x6 pressure treated pine. This cable kit appears as if it would be extremely fast opposed to what I previously used with a ton of fittings. Where did you get it?

    • @diywithandrew
      @diywithandrew  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yea I think this kit will work great if you have a long enough drill bit to go through those massive posts. Here are the links to where I got everything: amzn.to/2MVmkgQ --If you need more links and info, my show notes below has everything. Hope your project goes well. I would love to see the finished deck when you are done!

    Would love to know exactly how the posts are anchored. I can't decide between metal or wood posts at this stage.

    • @diywithandrew
      @diywithandrew  ปีที่แล้ว

      My posts were pre framed in and then dry walled around. The short ones are standard railing posts locked in at base then the railing anchored in with pocket holes underneath. The cables are then able to be screwed into the posts ans 2x4’s behind the dry wall. Hope that helps.

  • @ErikaStamey-o9p
    @ErikaStamey-o9p ปีที่แล้ว

    It looks great. I'm still not totally confident I can do it though. Also, these are small sections, how long of a section of cable would you trust? I have a section of about 8' at the longest cable.

    • @diywithandrew
      @diywithandrew  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you! I am not a professional, but I think anything more than 6 feet might not work well. I would want a post in between 8 feet for sure.

  • @cdubtube
    @cdubtube 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    You don't mention dimensions, but it looks like you're more than 3-3.5" between cables? Code in most places requires that you can't pass a 4" sphere between cables. 32" height/9 runs suggests you're at 4", which with the bend that you get on a cable in the middle, you may not meet that requirement.

    • @diywithandrew
      @diywithandrew  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      My project meets my code.

      What about the fact the railing can't be spaced out without a support at least every 3 feet

    • @dpfreedman
      @dpfreedman 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@jangingout I'm currently replacing the old wood railing on my 50-foot long deck with cable. My local building department assured me there is no requirement for intermediate spacers here as long as the 4-inch ball test is passed. I have 7-foot spacing between posts. Local code requirements vary.

    For cable railing, I thought code calls for support every 3 to 4 feet?

    • @diywithandrew

    My deck is 49 feet long and will have no top rail. How far apart can I install my post with this cable system?

    • @diywithandrew
      @diywithandrew  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would check local building code for that exact measurement. I would prefer 4 feet for mine, but for code there might be a different requirement in your area.

    An open end wrench of the correct size will replace that POS that comes in the box. Unless I’m buying a serious high end product, “step 1a throw away shoddy wrench included in box”

    Just curious... but how are you supposed to screw the wire threads in on your own if you don't have another person at the other end to help turn simultaneously? Is there a solution to that?

    • @diywithandrew
      @diywithandrew  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Other than turning once on one side then going and turning the same amount on the other side, nope. I’d ask a neighbor or a friend before I’d resort to that.

    • @dougt564
      @dougt564 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Don't attach cables... screws lags in until last 4 threads showing, put in cables (and washers if using), crimp both,...turn in last 4 threads taking turns at each end. Make sense?
