      Hello yolandi92 - I totally agree with you concerning Kenny's pronounciation but as i read that you are writing from Germany - Did you eventually find a source already over here, a trade name, or even a link, where I can get the necessary stuff (the flocks , the glue and the pump)? I would be very happy for any hint. Many thanks in advance!

      Hi, yes I found a brand that is selling everything but the pump (maybe also the pump but I used a "Flockstab" it's like an electrical pump but didn't worked out that well. I used the flock for a requisite, so it didn't have to be that robust.) Here's a Link to the company: shop.kerling.de/index.php?cPath=35&MODsid=162c0f874f2382b1b6227805848f7373

      You're very welcome. I'm glad that you enjoyed it. Don't feel intimidated by flocking. It is one of the easiest mediums to apply and gives such professional results. Just be careful with the application of the adhesive because that is what will define the edge of your suede text. If you adhesive is crooked, your text will be crooked. Other than that, it's pretty much fool proof. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask.

    First of all. Great video. Very informative. I am about to try my hand at this flocking, bought the same kit from lee valley. My question to you is on the sealing of the wood. Would water based poly work or would the adhesive eat through it? Also how thick do I apply the adhesive? Thanks in advance.

    • @acutabove_woodworkings
      @acutabove_woodworkings  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The adhesive will not eat through water based poly. You will just have to remember to give a light sanding before applying the adhesive and then thoroughly clean away the sanding dust as the water based poly will raise the grain and it will show through the flocking. As for how much adhesive to apply.....you can treat it as if it were paint. Just a thin even coat on the entire area to be flocked. The grains of suede text do not embed themselves into the adhesive, but rather stick to the surface of it so there is no need for a thick coating. I hope this helps. Good luck with your flocking. Thanks for tuning in and if you have any other questions, please don't hesitate to ask. I'd be more than happy to help if I can.

    I want to flock canvas. Do you think I will have trouble with the adhesive passing through the fabric? If so, what solution would you recommend? Many thanks, loved the video!

    • @acutabove_woodworkings
      @acutabove_woodworkings  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I personally, have never flocked canvas. I would think, that due to its absorbent nature, that the adhesive would not be able to build up on the surface enough to get the suede text to adhere correctly. The only solution I can think of for this would be to seal the canvas. In the same way that an artist would seal a stretched canvas for an oil painting, you could seal the canvas and then, once it is dry, apply the adhesive and flock as normal. I would perform this action on some test pieces before I ever attempted it on the final project. I hope this helps.

    hoping for some hints. I am also watching your videos from across the

    Finally a good video on flocking!
    Couple questions, do you need to electrically charge the particles? I've seen a couple videos where they hooked up a ground wire to the piece they were flocking.
    Also any tips on doing a large piece like a car headliner?

    • @acutabove_woodworkings
      @acutabove_woodworkings  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey there Phil. For starters, you do not need to electrically charge anything with this method. There are other flocking methods where the charging of particle would be necessary, but this isn't one of them. I've never heard of anyone using suede text to flock a vehicle's head liner but I don't see why it wouldn't work. My suggest would be to have all of your prep done ahead of time and have everything ready to go. The adhesive would most like be applied with a roller in a larger application because your window to work with the adhesive and flocking is very limited. If you can't do it all in one shot, you might have to do sections but pay attention to which way you apply the flocking. Your applicator will have to be facing the same way for each application, otherwise you will change the direction of the pile on each application making the individual areas stand out. It would be best to apply it all in one shot, which would require some fast work. Possibly get someone to help you apply the adhesive so that you can get it covered on the headliner in the allotted time frame of the flocking that you choose. Thanks for tuning in to the show. It's appreciated.

    Hi, thanks fo the video-do you have any tips on doing larger pieces that would take longer than 10 mins to paint and apply the flocking to? also do you know if the adhesive works well on metal? thank you!

    • @acutabove_woodworkings
      @acutabove_woodworkings  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The adhesive will work well on any surface that would accept paint. If you can paint it, you can flock it. Metal would work just fine although you may want to scuff the surface of the metal just a bit with a fine grade sandpaper to give the adhesive a better area to stick. As far as large surfaces, I have been quite successful by using a small roller and applying the adhesive that way. You get much better coverage and you can apply it much faster. I hope this helps. Thanks for tuning in to the show.

    I need to flock a record platter from an old Philco phonograph from the 1950's. They used an electrostatic process to flock these - what's the difference between using an electrostatic flocking gun and doing your way, simply with the shaker?

    • @acutabove_woodworkings
      @acutabove_woodworkings  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +ODPILOT The tool that I use to apply the flocking is not a shaker, but instead, it provides a means to blow the flocking out in a fine mist by swirling air inside the chambers an forcing the flocking material out onto the work piece. The flocking is held in place by the adhesive. To the best of my knowledge, the electrostatic application applied a charge to an item to be flocked and causes the flocking material to be attracted to it. In essence, it draws the material in, where my method blows it out. I'm not sure if I explained that well enough or not.

    • @ODPILOT
      @ODPILOT 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +kennyearrings1 Thanks for your response. I decided to splurge and spend about $90 to buy an electrostatic flocker to flock my old Philco record platter. You fill a chamber with the flocking material that becomes positively charged and you attach a ground wire to the object you're flocking. When you hold the flocking device near the negatively charged record platter, an electrostatic field is created which, as you said, draws the flocking out of the chamber and it sticks to the colored acrylic glue -so you don't have to shake it at all. The final result is a more fluffy flocked finish (as opposed to more of a flat finish). In the case of an old record platter, I believe they used this method as it makes the "landing" of the record softer when the record changer plops down a new record to be played. Anyway - great video - thanks for all your info.

    • @acutabove_woodworkings
      @acutabove_woodworkings  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +ODPILOT That sounds really cool. You should post a video of how it works. I was pretty sure that it had to do with opposing charges attracting the flocking material. Thanks for the explanation and thanks for taking the tie to drop me a comment.

    @kennyearrings1 This video is tremendous, thank you! I just found your channel and subbed it immediately. I had truck bed liner dissolve foam brushes once and am wondering if i should adjust.

    • @acutabove_woodworkings
      @acutabove_woodworkings  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Without knowing the exact composition of the foam that you intend to use, I'm going to say yes, it will dissolve it. The coloured adhesive for the flocking is an oil or petroleum based product and in general, foam and petroleum based anything don't mix. The adhesive will usually eat the foam away. If it were my project, I would be rethinking the packing material for your tools. Thanks for tuning in.

      Paint would work, as long as it is oil base and the same colour as the flocking. The old style balloon pumps would also work as a make shift, home made applicator. You would just have to drill more hole in the top of it and hold on to both sections of the pump. The reason that the adhesive is colour matched to the flocking is so that the background doesn't show when the flocking is completed. If you use white adhesive (paint) and brown flocking, the white will show through the text.

      kennyearrings1 I was going to use white paint on white flocking so figured that out first second but I'll try to get that old balloon pump! All I've got now are the modern plastic ones, lol.
      I had 2 tiny boxes of nail flocking powder it was very hard to get and it is way too little the way you use it. I was just going to sprinkle it around, so hopefully this stuff from China is worth it waiting a month before I can continue my work.

      Have you had a chance to compare the results of flocking using the manual applicator versus an electrostatic one?

    • @acutabove_woodworkings
      @acutabove_woodworkings  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      For the number of times that I actually use flocking in my projects, electrostatic application has never been a real option for me so I have never tried it. I would love to hear from someone who has though to compare the processes.

  • @starkieable

    Does the flocking applicator help to make the finished project more plush? I have some old my little pony who need to be re-flocked and simply sprinkling the flocking on caused the flocking to lay flat instead of on end.

    • @acutabove_woodworkings
      @acutabove_woodworkings  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +starkieable
      The applicator will make it a little more plush for certain. Just shaking it on will make it lumpy and uneven. You might have a problem with colour matching the pony though. Either way, you should be able to get some professional results using the flocking, flocking adhesive and the applicator.

    do you think this technique would work to re-flock a skeletor panthor toy?

    • @acutabove_woodworkings
      @acutabove_woodworkings  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      It would work but you might have to get all of the old flocking off of the toy first. The uneven nature of the old flocking might give a rough and uneven texture when the new flocking is applied. Flocking will stick to any surface that has the adhesive spread on it so there is no reason that you couldn't reflect your Skeltor Panthor

    I am a collector of these figures called Funko Pops and a lot of them are flocked.. I figured I’d start to make my own. Do you have any knowledge when it comes to flocking plastic figures?

    • @acutabove_woodworkings
      @acutabove_woodworkings  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The coloured adhesive used in the flocking process will pretty much stick to anything, including plastic. Depending on the finish of the plastic, it might be necessary to "rough" up the surface just a little with a fine grade of sandpaper to get the adhesive to really stick although this probably wont be necessary for you. Have fun with you Funko Pops (my daughter has quite a few of those) and your flocking process. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask. Thanks for tuning in to the show.

      kennyearrings1 many videos I’ve seen online for flocking funko pops has people just using white glue.. probably Cus it’s hard to match the different colors on the figures with adhesive. Do you see a difference in color with a colored adhesive? Thanks for the reply! And great video 👏👏

    • @acutabove_woodworkings
      @acutabove_woodworkings  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@codenameuniccorn2412 The coloured adhesives make a huge difference as it matches the colour of the piece that you are flocking, match the flocking itself. That way, if there are any tiny little spaces that get missed, they are filled in with the colour of the adhesive. White glue dries clear and any spots that may not have the flocking stick properly will be an eyesore later. I have tried other adhesives but none of them compare to the coloured ones that are designed to be used with the product. I hope this helps.

    • @codenameuniccorn2412

      kennyearrings1 okay that makes a lot of sense I’ve been watching a lot of videos online on flocking. I bought the exact same flocking tube thing you have off amazon and several different colors of flocking. As I mentioned my biggest problem is since I am flocking funko pops I have no clue how I am going to be able to match the exact same color of the paint on the pops. A lot of people online use modge podge when flocking pops although I want the most professional results possible. I was thinking maybe I can mix some paint to the modge podge to try and get it to match the color of the pop I am flocking.. or perhaps the modge podge is good enough when it comes to pops since there is already paint on the pop that is close to the color of the flocking. Anyways sort of thinking out loud at this point lol my flocking comes today in the mail so wish me luck I am giving it a try.. I’ll let you know how it goes. Thanks for the help!

      You can flock anything that the adhesive will stick to. Why not give it a try. As long as you can get an even coat of the adhesive on the sneakers, then you should be able to apply the flocking. I can't say what the longevity will be like but there's only one way to find out. Hello Kenny - I have already commented on two of the comments below, hoping for some hints. I am also watching your videos from across the atlantic. It appears to be quite difficult over here to find the products, you are using for the flocking process. If you could provide us with a brand name for the necessary stuff (flocks, glue and the cardboard pump?) I might be able to google for a source from where I could buy it and then find a way to get it over here to Germany. I am sure, I'm not the only one with this question. :-)
