Despite the West Coast Eagles' struggles, they are not starting from scratch. The team has a mix of experienced veterans, a few players in their prime, and a lot of young talent that needs development. Bringing in a coach like Nathan Buckley or Ken Hinkley could be highly beneficial for their progress. Both coaches are known for their direct approach, which could provide the clarity and accountability some players need. Currently, it seems there are too many players on the team who are coasting rather than contributing. Emphasizing basic skills and instilling a never-give-up attitude could significantly improve their performance. This season, the Eagles have had several games where they were only five goals away from beating a top-eight side, but they completely fell apart against bottom teams, suffering heavy defeats.
I thoroughly agree with you. Players like Barrass and McGovern are still playing well in the backline, with Yeo, Duggan, Hunt, Ginbey and Reid able to compete in the middle (and Kelly is still capable if he pulls his finger out), then you have Waterman and Allen up front with Liam Ryan still showing some grit. There are some capable kids in the likes of Long, Maric, Culley, Harry Edwards, Hough, Bazzo, Ginbey and Reid (already mentioned), Jack Williams and Hewett (who didn't get a chance this season). There is enough talent there to be doing a lot better than we are. Schofield is starting to introduce more kids into the mix, which should've been done a lot earlier. We certainly have a better list than many people are suggesting. Sure, we're in full rebuild mode, but a lot of the players will likely be cut from the team at the end of the season and there's enough there for an experienced coach, like Buckley or Hinkley to work with. Some of our results and performances have shown that we are able to compete if we can actually be f**ked. I think this team needs a firm and experienced hand, so I'd be very happy with either Buckley or Hinkley, but i'd be particularly pleased if we got Nathan Buckley.
I think Bucks is a great option for WCE , someone from the outside who will come in and whip them into shape and be ruthless. I agree that certain sections of our supporters will be against it but once results come in they will get on board
@@babylemonade2868 We stuck with Simpson for a ridiculous amount of time, well past his use by date, so why wouldn't we take a chance on an experienced coach like Buckley? He was one kick away from winning a grand final and his move away from Collingwood was done very professionally. I'd take him in a heart beat.
On the west coast coaching names, Chris Fagan is a great case study. Lions were horrible for years, he comes in from being a footy boss, assistant coach for a while and showed why experiences with bad teams, good teams.
Liam Ryan is a star, but there are a few guys there that want to have a good time and enjoy their footy. Now that's great if you're the cherry on top. But in a bottom team, its essential to be constantly creating pressure and playing with real grit. I see a number of guys that just aren't that switched on. Jones shows some urgency down back, but elsewhere on the field he's just running around for a kick. Last week he didn't even put his hands up on the mark. We need pace and skill, but we need guys that want to sweat blood for the team.
7 coaches in their entire history (including Schofield given he is doing the job) shows we tend to back them in but if it doesn’t work they move them on quickly. My money is on it being an assistant of some description. Wouldn’t mind Hickmont on schoey’s point to be fair
I hope he doesn’t leave Freo, but given what Jaymie Graham has done with the Freo forward line over the last year, you’d think he would have to be a big chance.
I heard Scott Selwoods name in the mix too (can't remember where). He's at Collingwood as an assistant in charge of development. That sounds exactly like what we need. I would suggest he would also have that hard edge mixed in with being a top bloke (just looking at how he was as a player from the outside). In saying that I wouldn't mind seeing Bucks in the blue and gold either.
WC - despite trying to show otherwise - is not as bad as it seems. Can easily bounce back next year if the right coach can get them sorted. Look below, even I could coach that team to improvement (I have had plenty of supercoach success!) B: Duggan Barrass Cole HB: Ginbey McGovern Hough C: Maric Kelly Hunt HF: Brockman Waterman Hewett F: Long Allen Ryan R: Flynn Reid Yeo Bench: Heaps to choose from - its why we can have hope; Culley, Bazzo, J. Williams, Chesser, Hall, Burgiel, Johnston, H Edwards + some new draftees
I wouldn't hate Brett Ratten coming over from Hawthorn to coach West Coast. He's had a hand in Carlton and St Kilda rebuilds so has some experience. I think the biggest hurdle is attracting people to come across to the West.
One comment on sling tackle penalties etc... Going back 30 years plus you never used to get guys being concussed through tackling. Certainly through shirt fronts and raised elbows etc. But not tackling. This indicates to me that players are now stronger and are more vigorous in tackling. They also pin arms and try to be physical through the tackle. Causing pain, but not deliberately a serious injury. But all that means the game has moved on and tackling is now more physcial and violent than its ever been. So I do understand why they are trying to crack down on dangerous tackles.
We need a coach who can come in like Sam Mitchell did at Hawks. Set some standards and get rid of underperforming veterans and mid tier cloggers. Mitchell turned it around in 18 months, no reason why a new coach can’t do the same.
I wouldn't find it difficult to see Bucks as the Eagles Head Coach. Took over from Matlhouse in 2012 and immediately started to transition the list into his own moving on 8 premiership players within 2 years. Took them to within one kick of a premiership and then backed it up with a pre lim in 2019 and a semi in 2020. The wheels fell off in 2021 but the club was in turmoil. List manager resigned at start of year due to salary cap mismanagement, CEO resigned mid season, another CEO at the end of the year and Bucks quit during the year as well. Buckley is an astute student of the game, a good communicator and game day coach and would garner the respect of the playing group. We'd be lucky to have him.
Yeh… as an Eagles fan… lifelong WA boy… I just do not see the Nathan Buckley or Ken Hickley having the motivation of taking the Eagles job. It’s not a statement of their ability, they are definitely qualified but I’m worried about their past Would they be great coaches? Absolutely… I have so much respect for Bucks (despite absolutely hating Collingwood) and Ken is great also but I think of their former baggage of painful memories of Ken as a Cats player in 1992, 1994 and Bucks as Pies coach in 2018 😂😂. Those memories of granny losses would be a painful burden. Cats players have footy PTSD between 1989-1995… 4 lost grannies in 6 years (so Ken carries that pain) and Bucks had his heart crushed 6 years ago. Do they actually want to join the club that gave them nightmares? I don’t know maybe I am reading into it too much… but as euphoric as we felt as Eagle fans they would have felt the absolute opposite. I just think that it may affect the morale if they were in that top position as Eagles head coach
New Eagles coach can follow the Roos plan which Dimma perfected Buy one more ace midfielder and with two half backs with running tanks eg Ginbey and Hall Then pressure pressure Eagles will be off the bottom in no time Plenty of talent on the list just lacking one midfielder and a game plan to win
Whoever the Biden lookalike is, No club ever looks for a coach to try educate a list for three to five years then sack them, and hopefully the next guy wins a flag. Pretty stupid comment to say the next coach cannot take them all the way.
Shouldn't you look for talent first. But who cares west coast still ows Geelong a first round pick, For Kelly (Sympathy). A Brown low, that cant kick 10 meters, always by himself as preferred can't Mark over his head. And a Darling bud of may that's LAZY, and Rotham, no effort. Blame the 1 that let this LAZYNESS HAPPEN.THE DRAFT IS THERE FOR A REASON.
Will Schofield looks like a friendlier Max Gawn

Jamie Graham is the MAN for the job.
Did Skeeter even watch the game ? The Saints torched the Eagles and were on fire to say that they didn’t play that good was a bit disrespectful.
