  • The Tacoma Narrows Bridge is a pair of mile-long suspension bridges in the U.S. state of Washington, which carry State Route 16 across the Tacoma Narrows between Tacoma and the Kitsap Peninsula. They replaced a bridge that was opened to traffic on July 1, 1940 and which became famous four months later for a dramatic wind-induced structural collapse that was caught on motion picture film. The original span's motion earned it the nickname "Galloping Gertie".
    Due to materials shortages as a result of World War II, it took 10 years to build a replacement bridge, which opened October 14, 1950. The 1950 replacement bridge was sometimes referred to as "Sturdy Gertie", and, like its predecessor, was the third longest suspension span in the world at the time of its construction. Population growth on the Kitsap peninsula caused the bridge to exceed its vehicle capacity, and a parallel bridge was constructed to carry eastbound traffic, while the 1950 bridge was reconfigured to carry westbound traffic. The new bridge opened July 15, 2007, making the Tacoma Narrows Bridge the longest twin suspension span in the world.

    It's incredible how poorly the bridge was built. I would've thought the engineers would've studied the wind behaviour in and around the Narrows of Puget Sound *before* building the Tacoma Narrows Bridge and built the bridge accordingly. It's incredible that no one, except for a pet dog, was killed in the collapse.

    "OUR FAMOUS BRIDGE", The MIGHTY MACKINAC, has steel grating built into the bridge decking to allow air flow. This steel grating mitigates the stresses put on the bridge by winds. It doesn't appear the new bridge has that(.i maybe wrong).I know the original bridge did not, which was one of the factors contributing to it's collapse. Wind gusts where the MAC bridge is built have been clocked at 80mph & up.

      Pedro DaSiva Two similar bridges were built in Russia. One spans Golden Horn bay to link the two halves of Vladivostok. The other one spans the ocean from Vladivostok to Rossiya Island. The latter is now the longest cable suspension bridge over an ocean. Both are quite beautiful bridges. Even though they were careful to avoid the "Gallopin Gertie" problem, they STILL had a harmonics issue when the wind reached a certain velocity so temporarily had to shut the bridge down. There is a video of that vibration somewhere on youtube. They hired a Dutch Company to add some type of stabilizers to eliminate most of the problem, although an article I read stated that there will be instances when they will close the bridge to assure the safety of travelers. Hope they built a couple of hotels on Rossiya Island. It is a long swim or ferry ride to Vladivostok in the winter. :)

    It wasn't the girders or tresses on the bridge that made it fail. The key is looking at the roadway of the new bridge. It has grates that are open to the air between lanes. Galloping Gertie was one of the first bridges that made engineers realize that aerodynamics are vital. The bridge deck in essence became a long wing in the wind, lifting and falling. Because the higher pressure air underneath the bridge had no where to go. The new bridge has open grates to allow pressures to equalize.

    Go to 1:05 on the video. See the solid greenish panel right above the 5? I saw a display in the museum in St Louis that said that if those panels had been open rather than solid all the way across, the bridge would not have come down. Big vortexes formed where the green panels met the bridge deck, and somehow they set the bridge to twisting, and ultimately it was destroyed.

      Five mile span between Michigan's upper and lower peninsulas (Macinaw "mighty mac" bridge) has metal grates in the roadway that vehicles drive on. It's like 'expanded metal' with diamond shaped 'holes' through out. This allows air/wind to pass thru the structure. Bridge was built about 1958 and is under constant maintenance and holding up well. I'm no bridge designer, but them uprights on this Narrows Bridge seemed awful skinny to me. I suppose that's what happens when you're trying to save money on a project. ...and yeah, for the record, I DO think I could have done a better job.

    11austin3100 . its not fake and, no it was not made of concrete. its made from asphalt which is flexible up to a certain point and thats why it started to fail. the only editing was the fake audio, they used girders instead of the proper rigid beams they should have used and this plus the ocsillation caused by wind made it twist and eventually it broke.

    • @Dragonryder813
      @Dragonryder813 10 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      The problem with the construction was the solid side panels that did not let the wind pass through. This set up an oscillation in the span, that caused turbulence that made the oscillation worse, till the air tore the bridge apart.
      I live 5 miles from the bridge. It's history is a particular point of interest around here. If you know where to look, or want to dive those rapidly flowing waters (from tidal forces) you can still see much of the old bridge wreckage.

    • @Aleiria13
      @Aleiria13 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Owiko7;
      No.., it’s not made of asphalt ether, it was made of steel, it’s just that this bridge was not designed or made using a technique we call “bridge-girdering” which is the design technique You see on ALL suspension bridges now and was used on the Golden gate bridge witch is why that bridge still stands today is because it was built with that girder technique and also why the Brooklyn bridge still stands is because that building technique was used on that bridge as well- see the differences in how the side of “Galloping-girdie” was built and how the sides of the Golden gate and the Brooklyn bridge are???
      Thats why those bridges stand and Galloping girdie fell.

    • @markdoldon8852
      @markdoldon8852 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thats a completely confused descriotion. First, bridges are not made of asphalt vs concrete. Asphalt is the road surface it contributes virtually nothing to the structure. And the cause of the collapse had little to do with the TYPE of structure, bridges are made from girders or trusses every day. The issue was a lack of consideration for wind effects, and particularly harmonics. Without wind, the bridge was sufficiently strong. Without sustained wind AT A SPECIFIC VELOCITY, it woukd still be standing.
      Just FTR, I see no purpose in adding fake wind sounds. Id love to have a REAL recording of the sound, but faking it seems worthless.

    • @markdoldon8852
      @markdoldon8852 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @niecers there are bridges all over the world built with a grid structure under the road surface or even WITHOUT a solid surface. There is a bridge between Ottawa and Gatineau Quebec, another over the St Lawrence Seaway where you can watch the river below you as you pass. That has little to do with the stability of the bridge, which was a victim of wind harmonics.

    • @markdoldon8852
      @markdoldon8852 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The reason the bridge failed is very closely related to the effect of an opera singer breaking a wine glass. The wind (or sound waves for the singer) sets up vibration and or movement in the structure. Every structure has what are known as native harmonic frequencies, which the structure naturally vibrates at. It has to do with size, shape, thickness, type of material etc and is unique to that object. When some outside force (wind or sound) induces a vivrstion that matches one of the harmonic frequences, the object begins to match and then to ADD TO the movement. If the forces continue to build, they can eventually reach the breaking point. Today, large structures are tested in wind tunnels to determine the effects of wind or earthquakes. The solution is often NOT a stronger structure, but one that is allowed to move, but is designed so that different parts move at different ways, acting to prevent harmonics. When one part begins to vibrate, that frequency will slow or even counteract movement elsewhere, damping down the overall effect. One thing us certain: if a structure is allowed to reach its native frequency and continue without damping, it WILL fail, whther built of steel, concrete , or crystal.

    what is this nonsense? a looped sample of waves crashing with a crappy filter... dubbed over the video? and why does the video switch from old footage to new footage of some yoyo in a car driving over the new bridge? this video doesnt make sense to me.
    On a side note... no one died, the bridge was suspended with no lower support which is why it inevitably collapsed, and 9/11 was an inside job.

    I think the sound is rare because it was probably added. I've seen a lot of this footage, in the past, and there's no reason it wouldn't have included sound if sound had been recorded. Maybe I'm wrong, but, it doesn't seem to make sense that this has been played everywhere and it never had sound.

  • @drcurv
    @drcurv 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I'm afraid I have to agree with others on here who find the dubbed sound and the repetitive looping to be nothing but nuisance value. But don't worry, I haven't actually given you a thumbs-down. Ignoring the squabble over whether or not the pooch survived, does anyone have any info on who the two cretinous pedestrians are walking along the footpath while the bridge is gyrating like that? They appear to be a man and woman (arm in arm?).

    I have never seen any account of the disassembly and removal of the remains of the old bridge. I know it sat there until after the war. I grew up in Tacoma, and my Father took me walking out on the rebuilt bridge once when I was little in the late 1960's. It was scary for a little kid! We ate lunch at a restaurant called The Span, that was on the west side of the bridge. Brings back memories, thanks.
