  • Der Hohenfriedberger (AM I, 21 (Army March I, 1c and Army march III, 1b)), also called Hohenfriedberger Marsch or Der Hohenfriedberger Marsch, is one of the most classic and well known German military marches. It takes its name from the victory of the Prussians over the allied Austrians and Saxons on June 4, 1745 during the Second Silesian War at the Battle of Hohenfriedberg, near Striegau.

@@pashauzan but Napoleon probably would've beaten Fritz if it came down to it anyways due to him having an amazing artillery doctrine while the Prussians had a lackluster one. We all saw that in 1870 Prussia defeated France with superior artillery and inferior infantry, so who's to say that the inverse would not be true in 1805-06?

Music that empowers the soul! I'd always imagine a Prussian battalion fighting a hard battle and then this music begins to grow louder and louder. On top of a hill, you would see our King, our Fritz leading a fresh and most rigorously drilled army. Simply, the Hohenfriedberger Marsh never gets old. :)

The Prussians didn't do the cadaver drill thing. They practiced very very hard, but only for things that they actually needed. Similar to the modern Norwegian army: We knew our fieldcraft, how to do our specialties, how to assault, how to defend, etc. But stopping a march? No. There was simply no time to learn that.
So what you'd see would be a sort of line ambling towards the enemy like a bunch of amateurs, and then an ungodly amount of firepower would be unleashed, before the bayonet charge.

Herr Doctor, danke! Coming across your channel reminded me of how this music used to inspire me back even when I was high school. Also I decided to take a look into the life of Old Fritz. One of my best friends, may he rest in peace, was a special forces soldier, and intelligence officer during Viet Nam and later. He spent some time with the Bundeswehr border and mountain troops. Later he taught part time at the local California state college. We would have dinner together a lot, and spend time out hiking and talking about world events, our experiences in the military. When driving, or over at his place, we listened to this sort of music plus the classics. How I miss his company. But he was really into Frederick the Great. Presently I am writing and am in development on a special documentary dealing with the American Revolution and the Age of Reason. Anyway, all of this has inspired me to insert into it part of Fritz's story and its influence on another monarch of the time who would emulate him and provide essential aid to the struggling United States. The hero of the documentary dies also when Fritz died. Most do not realize how the Enlightenment and Age of Reason shaped the founding of the US, and influenced our founders. Also not to mention how this was responsible for why so much assistance was given to the American patriots.
So there, you helped influence what might turn out to be a major documentary film!
“Nothing can illustrate these observations more forcibly, than a recollection of the happy conjuncture of times and circumstances, under which our Republic assumed its
rank among the Nations; The foundation of our Empire was not laid in the gloomy age of Ignorance and Superstition, but at an Epoch when the rights of mankind
were better understood and more clearly defined, than at any former period, the researches of the human mind, after social happiness, have been carried to a
great extent, the Treasures of knowledge, acquired by the labours of Philosophers, Sages and Legislatures, through a long succession of years, are
laid open for our use, and their collected wisdom may be happily applied in the Establishment of our forms of Government; the free cultivation of Letters, the
unbounded extension of Commerce, the progressive refinement of Manners, the growing liberality of sentiment... have had a meliorating influence on mankind
and increased the blessings of Society. At this auspicious period, the United States came into existence as a Nation, and if their Citizens should not be completely
free and happy, the fault will be entirely their own.”
~George Washington, Writings, Circular to the States, 8 June 1783 - Writings 26:484--89
"The greatest and noblest pleasure which men can have in this world is to discover new truths; and the next is to shake off old prejudices."

On the picture the soldiers are possibly prussian life guards you can kind of tell by the small tiny detail of their hats and tunics, and these are quite possibly the best royal guards in all of europe during the 17th century. They would never retreat or run away, you can see a few of the loyal soldiers being hit by a musket volley and they continue marching moral fully intact.

    • @dr.ludwig
      @dr.ludwig  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

I read because Friedrich himself fought alongside them and didn't stay in safety behind the lines. He also slept where the soldiers slept and ate normal potato soup just like them. He boosted their moral so much. He thought of himself as the first servant of the state.

This guy is obviously scared and / or reluctant to march forward and thereby serve as a living target to the enemy while behind him already the first comrades are falling.
