I got this amp almost two years ago partly based on what I heard in this video and I am so satisfied, thanks for helping me find such a versatile amp! And, for putting in the time to do solid reviews!
I'm convinced. I'm buying a Supersonic 22 over the Bassbreaker 15. 1, The foot switch. 2, the gain channel. 3. FX loop. I'm definitely going to try one first because of the pop/noise issue. I'm using a Vox Night Train 15c right now. It's my first guitar amp and I'm ready for something new. Thanks for the reviews.
This Supersonic 22 is one of those amps on my radar along with a Bassbreaker 15. I have a Hot Rod Deluxe III that I really like and a Dr. Z Maz 18 Jr NR (no reverb) 112 combo that is my main amp. Love the videos!
I bought the Fender Supersonic 22 Combo at the same time I bought my 2012 Fender FSR American Deluxe Stratocaster so I could play fender into fender. In fact I have the limited edition model with the Halloween coloring (black and orange). I really enjoyed learning more about my gear form you, thanks Douglas
Great review Phil! I liked how you showed all the different tones you could get with a bunch of different guitars, showed the effects loop, and talked about why you liked it over other amps.
The pop comes from a capacitor keeping its DC charge while switching over. The cure is a bleed resistor, usually. Schematics for your version and the one you once owned are available and if you check in the vicinity of the relays you might be able to spot the differences if the circuit has been fixed.
I've the 60w head version with 2x12 cab and i love it.Only my head doesn't have a reverb though. If you connect a patch cable in the back of the effects loop and turn both knobs up that will give your sound a clean boost.Nice review keep it up.
I've had a Super Sonic about 5-6 years ago and the biggest issue with this amp is that although it has great sounds, the floor hiss was totally unacceptable. Sold it. If that could have been corrected, I'd still have it.
Nice. I got a sweet deal on a used supersonic 2x12 cab a while ago - great sound, just weighs a ton. I just might endeavor to pair it up with its matching head one day.
I have the combo and love it. I purchased this amp just for the clean normal channel. It is beautiful and sound amazing with my ts808. Dont like the fat switch at all or any of the distortion channels. The reverb is very nice too.
My Super Sonic Combo I would describe the Gain one on the lead channel as treble gain and Gain two as a warmer gain. I do not hear fuzz as you described. I use a Mullard 12AX7 preamp tube in the first tube socket. Fantastic amp!
Just bought one used. Unfortunately the channel switch on the faceplate no longer latches, but can still switch via footswitch. I'll get around to fixing eventually. Great amp.
Thanks Phillip, I traded in some old gear and was supposed to put the money towards a AVRI Telecaster; but I left with the Supersonic 22 . Damn, I was disappointed cause the dough didn't go toward the Tele; but after watching this vid, I'm gonna keep the Supersonic cause it's friggin awesome! The guy's at Dave's guitars did steer me right; thanks again to them and you Phillip.
Hi Phil! Thank you for your review and your informative videos!. I'm searcing for a high gain, 4x12 amp and there's a Supersonic (blonde), second hand in a local shop. One of the things i like in it it's the Bassman circuit. Might go for it...
I know I'm very late in posting here, but I just came across this demo (good one BTW....just could have added some lower gain settings, i.e. bluesy stuff). The main thing I wanted to comment on was the channel popping + reverb squealing. These two faults existed in many/most of the initial release. I'm shocked Fender blew you off on a fix. They became a tech. bulletin and were fixed free of charge under warranty (yes, mine was an early one that had the faults). I had no problem getting this done at an authorized Fender warranty repair station, free and quickly. When I bought mine, the head was not yet offered, or I would have gotten it. Very shortly thereafter they came out. I found a custom cab builder who made head cabs for the 1965 DRRI and we determined it was identical except for several cutouts on the back panel to access jacks. I got it for a very good price and made the conversion. I think this is a great amp and is so versatile that the only pedal I use is a JOYO Ironman Rated Boost (tiny little pedal) velcro'd to the top of the amp, in-the-loop, always ON, and switchable via the FS loop button. Gives a volume boost to both channels for soloing.
I can’t believe the 594 didn’t make it off the wall. Haha. These amp when first released were 60 and 100 watts and were setup the same on the front panel but the clean switch went from a vibrolux clean to a bassman circuit. The new ones are different. The output section on the new 22 watt versions are also different. The new one is based off a deluxe reverb output stage and the old ones were 60 and 100 watts so it was different and original to those amps. That may have been part of the popping problem Phillip was talking about, but I don’t know. I’m glad they fixed that popping, and I’m glad it’s 22 watts but I preferred the older clean channel to the newer one. There was a dramatic difference. Also the font that said supersonic was different and it had a salt and pepper type grill cloth to the now oxblood or traditional black and silver. Overall great amps though.
Got to be Pete Townshend's recent rig for a reason...great amps I don't own one but have had a supersonic in the past and the early grey ones are great for my grungey style. Great stuff Phillip. I'm a bit of a gain junky and now have a Randall for monster gain. Love your vids dude.
A Fender guitar always has a certain sound to me no matter what you plug it in to. I just don't like the Fender sound but I am aware a lot of people do. I sure do like your playing and your videos, you have taught me a lot.
Picked one up used for a lot less than a deluxe reverb. Thought I might be unhappy for having not spent the extra money, it’s just not the case. The normal channel does end up sounding like a Vibralux, or a black face DR. The fat setting sounded horrible on every TH-cam video I heard. It sounds so much better live. Knowing I can get a couple of great Boogie sounds out of the second channel is a huge plus! They are a little too pricey new, but used they are a great value.
I also love the Super Champ X2 HD head. I absolutely love mine and agree with you. I also have a Hot Rod Deluxe III and like yourself enjoy it also. Very nice video on this Super Sonic 22, I almost bought one but decided on the Hot Rod Deluxe mainly because of the clean channel sound. Thanks for this video.
i bought one of the "vintage style" looking marshal DSL40's... and i like it ... but i feel like maybe i should of played more Fenders... always room for expansion i guess... or i guess i could try some different tubes
I remember when I was trying out a Les Paul in a guitar store, they plugged me into the supersonic 22 :) it was a distraction :) I kept looking at it and going through the settings etc. its a nice amp
Beautiful amp, looks like it fell out of the 70's. looking for higher gain myself but I loved playing fender back about a decade ago and played nothing but and this is damned tempting with a good pedal. Would have bought this in a heartbeat, I'm going to have to grab one in a year or two. Also that fender Pop is not just on this model, I've heard that on several fenders that I've used, that were pre 2000. Never thought anything of it, was pretty bad on a particular black faced twin I had.
I almost bought a used one a few months ago but thought the reverb was weak. I also own a Vibrolux RI, Princeton Recording, a '79 Deluxe Reverb. I've owned 8 Vibroluxes since I was 16 and that's kinda my frame of reference. :-) JP
I have never been sure if the reverb on mine is particularly weak or if that is just the way it is meant to be. 10 setting reverb isn’t that ridiculous on this amp whereas in other fender amps it would be a washout.
Nice review. Everything sounded great on the video. I got the Supersonic22 & was a bit disappointed. Cleans weren't as great as most other Fender amps I played and distortion also didn't quite hit the mark for me. It was kind of the Jack of all trades master of none for me. 😏
I've had a Hot Rod Deluxe for about 8 or 9 years now... I always prefer to get dirt from the amp rather than a pedal if I can, but the Deluxe's drive channel just doesn't cut it. So I'm looking for a Fender toned amp with a decent drive channel... Something tight with good bass response. I've heard good things about these Supersonics, but they are not cheap.
Phil, I was hoping you'd do a review exactly like this and you did! I love my Supersonic 22 because it gives me classic Fender tones when I want while offering a lot of versatility from gain channel. I completely agree with you about other Fender amps offering better cleans, but to me the Supersonic 22 offers the best package as a whole. Awesome review, man!
I prefer my mark v 25 but i'm a shred guy. Great cleans for my needs and better gain but that's because of what i do. If i did more clean and crunch i'd fo the fender super too.
Had the Supersonic 60 - great amp but traded it for a Bassbreaker. SSonic was overly noisy which bugged me. My Princeton 68' is super quiet. Wouldn't mind getting a SSonic back someday. SSonuc Vibrolux and Bassman tones were spot on.
+Goss Samer If you google the SS and noise, you see a ton of complaints (popping and noise). I just know I loved the possibilities of the amp but couldn't get past the hiss with the reverb, almost made it unusable. Really thought the SS would be the ultimate amp but just so many tubes and hard to chase down the issues without spending a ton on tubes. Would be truly the ultimate amp if it didn't have any issues as you truly can play without OD, pedal, etc. footswitch, and fx loop is a great feature.
I had a chance to play the Super-Sonic 22 head at a store through a large Fender 2x12 cabinet. It sounds really sweet and had nice versatility with the clean Fat switch and the combinations of the two Gains on the overdrive channel. It has a nice full size real spring reverb tank, which sounded nicely. No tremolo though. With the effects loop I was thinking to compare it with a Hot Rod Deluxe (BTW why there's no HRD head?) But no they are different animals. the Super Sonic sounds more like DRRI. Then I was wondering if it has the same inherent in many DRRI issue (esp. Custom 68s with the hotter negative feedback) - the high noise floor, the hissing at low volume or even 1 volume (HRD have no noise issues). And yes, that particular unit had that hissing noise. Specifically with ambient quiet room level of 29 dB, the no signal 1 volume 22 was producing 45 dB of hiss. This means for home use or recording, it would be very annoying once you turn it on every time. For DRRI I found a trick - AB splitting the input with B inverted and feeding in both channels. But 22 has only one input. So noise level was a put off. I wonder if someone knows of a trick workaround?
Burn channel.....both gains up....treble down....bass kinda down.....middle up all the way....reverb way up = instant Eric Johnson lead tone without using pedals. As a side note....this amp really changes personality depending on the guitar plugged in, which I love about an amp.
Good question. I've been gigging with the Super-Sonic 60 combo for the past 4 years and love it. Though it is heavy, and if I turn it up much past 2 my drummer will start throwing sticks at me as it is very loud. And as I mic it anyway, was wondering if I could get by downgrading to the 22.
gain channel sounds great... though its wattage, price and gain tone don't quite match a 6505, its far superior clean tone and footswitch can easily make up for it... asuming it's still loud enough to be heard amid a full band (which it likely is, given the ludocrous volumes acieved by even lower powered valve amps).
Ive been holding on to my supersonic header thats black and i got two blonde 4-12's that im trying to figure pricing on, i dont see any full sets of em to find pricing. If ya could lmk what they run for
Excellent combination of Fender clean and Boogie-esque cascading gain. Is there enough clean headroom for live playing? Or would you have to get a more efficient speaker?
Hi. Good channel here ! I have a question: do you think it could be possible mod this head in order to add a switch to the "gain 2" circuit to make on/of for it ? I see that gain2 knob could be at zero and the amp will sound with only gain 1 going. So this is my queation. Make of this amp a 4 channel amp. You say in the video that is not a feature of this amp bit would it be a possible mod for it ? Thank you !
How did you know I was thinking about getting a SS22? Seriously, though, I am for several reasons. I've had a couple of Deluxe RI as well as a boutique clone. Love 6V6 amps but had to add pedals for dirt, and the DRRI didn't have an effects loop, or mid control (my clone did). The Suoersonic 22 seemed to check all the boxes, and you addressed some of the issues with the earlier models. Your video helped reinforce what I've been hearing in demos. Many thanks, Phillip, for this and your other videos.
Hi Phil, I was gonna get one of these last year but I didnt because I heard it usually came with significant quality control issues. Do you by any chance know if this problem has been adressed by Fender?
I have the Super Sonic 60 and it's great. Your review has been really helpful thank you! Question about the effects loop and distortion: I really love the distortion on the amp, but I also use distortion pedals on the clean channel for different songs, and I'm looking at different ways to stack on top of the built in distortion or clean channels. Because distortion typically is in the front of the signal chain, what effect would putting a distortion pedal in the effects loop have since it would then be after the pre-amp? What are some simple and useful ways to get different distortion sounds using the effects loop (either separating or within), distortion channel, and clean channel with pedals for shows and easy transitions between them?
Would you really keep the SS22 over your mark v:25? Is the SS22 too loud for bedroom practice? I have a Mark V:25 with a volume pedal and it sounds great at low volume. Thanks for the review!
Phillip, Do you know why the Deluxe Reverb combo is 1" deeper than the Super sonic. The super sonic cabinet is only about 8.5" deep. Seems like the SS is sacrificing some tone there?
Weird question, did the amp you had previously that "popped" have the other logo that they put on this amp? More of a flat block text vs the swooshy script style fender logo? Thanks
I'm looking an amplifier with that kind of sound what you're talking about (thicker, fuller, fat), What amplifiers (many options) can give you that tone with 1500$? I need that clean tone but, I need that this one do metal too (pedal or distortion). What do you think?
What are your thought on the Fender SuperSonic 60 watt head. The Vibrolux / Bassman settings as well as the burn channel. Thanks Phil, love your videos.
What do you think about the older/original version of the Super-Sonic 60 combo? The pre-2010ish version? Any outstanding differences? Or is it just as good?
I got this amp almost two years ago partly based on what I heard in this video and I am so satisfied, thanks for helping me find such a versatile amp! And, for putting in the time to do solid reviews!
I'm convinced. I'm buying a Supersonic 22 over the Bassbreaker 15. 1, The foot switch. 2, the gain channel. 3. FX loop. I'm definitely going to try one first because of the pop/noise issue. One of my all time favorite Fender amps.
It would be awsome to see a video on tube amp maintenance and tube biasing. Thanks for all the great info !
dont worry about it..........next question? ive never really changed a tube and have owned 20 different tube amps
This Supersonic 22 is one of those amps on my radar along with a Bassbreaker 15. I have a Hot Rod Deluxe III that I really like and a Dr. Z Maz 18 Jr NR (no reverb) 112 combo that is my main amp. Love the videos!

Love your comments...always spot on and reasonable opinion. i watch a lot of your videos and they are always reformative.
Great review Phil! I liked how you showed all the different tones you could get with a bunch of different guitars, showed the effects loop, and talked about why you liked it over other amps.
This thing can do classic rock for days. It has that classic rock sweet spot and crunch. Very cool amp

The Fender Super Sonic amp is Fantastic!

From my experience, gain 1 is the drive, and gain 2 is a sort of a more compressed gain. Gain 2 also makes it a bit darker.
I have the 1x12 combo version of this and love it. You got a killer drive tone around 12:50. Great demo bro
Your awesome!!! Straight forward, no bullshit
Every time I'm looking for a gear review, I turn to U.. thanks
SS 22 is my favorite modern Fender amp. It can do what the blackface amps can’t…provide a decent tube distortion.
Thanks for the video on the supersonic and your original list of amps in this price range. You showed me some capabilities I didn't know existed.
I've had a Super Sonic about 5-6 years ago and the biggest issue with this amp is that although it has great sounds, the floor hiss was totally unacceptable. Sold it. If that could have been corrected, I'd still have it.
try a 12ay7 in v4 to kill hiss, will make the amp dead silent at idle if you ever get in front of another one
@@twirlyboggs V4 is the phase inverter tube? Thanks for the hint. You never know...
Always loved these, but felt I could not justify getting one just for home use. Great demo.
Thinking of picking up one of those. Great demo, thank you:)
Nice. I got a sweet deal on a used supersonic 2x12 cab a while ago - great sound, just weighs a ton. I just might endeavor to pair it up with its matching head one day.
Gain 1 on 4 and gain 2 on 7 reminded me of Pete Townshend sound.
Nice, I thought exactly the same thing!
Ha, me too.
Murray Melander what about the eq settings?
I have the combo and love it. I purchased this amp just for the clean normal channel. It is beautiful and sound amazing with my ts808. Dont like the fat switch at all or any of the distortion channels. The reverb is very nice too.

My local guitar store has the combo of this amp and the reverb on it was messed up.
I prefer my mark v 25 but i'm a shred guy. Great cleans for my needs and better gain but that's because of what i do. If i did more clean and crunch i'd fo the fender super too.
Hopefully this addresses the problems the earlier Supersonics had
Between this one and the Mesa Mark V... which is nicer?
Thoughts on this head through the 1x12 vs bigger cabs? Trying to decide between the combo or buying the head alone to run through a 2x12.
Did you ever make a decision? I'm facing the same predicament
A 2X12 will be louder than the combo.
Had the Supersonic 60 - great amp but traded it for a Bassbreaker. SSonic was overly noisy which bugged me. My Princeton 68' is super quiet. Wouldn't mind getting a SSonic back someday. SSonuc Vibrolux and Bassman tones were spot on.

i have to use a noise gate on crunch channel as it can get a bit noisy.

hey Phil your channel is growing and it's AWESOME!!!! love your videos!!!
Almost sounds like a Marshall but also has a vox quality too
mine too had the pop sound, i got it fixed under warranty. very nice amp though
dittos on the x2. i also have both head and combo of that. swiss army knife.
Great review! Thank you so much!
Max out the mids, bass and both gain channels, pull down the treble to around 9 oclock, add some reverb and its amazing.

The effects loop on mine doesn't work.
Nice vid I love mine. I have the head & matching cabinet. 3/4” birch cab w vintage 30s big upgrade over the combo speakers. Dope amp The 💣
killer review you should compare the distortion/clean sounds between the supersonic and that mesa 25 that sitting next to it.
Why not the Super-Sonic 60 60W? It has more power for head room, half power for crunch, more versatile effects loops.
So if you had to choose between a new SuperSonic 22 combo and a Deluxe Reverb + TubeScreamer etc, which way would you go?
would this be a good amp head to gig with and what would be its limitations in that respect?
gain channel sounds great... though its wattage, price and gain tone don't quite match a 6505, its far superior clean tone and footswitch can easily make up for it... asuming it's still loud enough to be heard amid a full band (which it likely is, given the ludocrous volumes acieved by even lower powered valve amps).

Ive been holding on to my supersonic header thats black and i got two blonde 4-12's that im trying to figure pricing on, i dont see any full sets of em to find pricing. If ya could lmk what they run for
Great review showing the features and variety of sounds the Supersonic 22 is capable of.
The Fat setting on the clean channel is based off a 59" Bassman actually
Yeah, it was described oddly in this video as an EQ adjustment. The Bassman sound is at least twice the volume of the other clean setting.
great video. can you tell I'm on my next hunt ... lol
So the pedal deal is worthless without the actual amp though correct?
When that tone gets dirty, man, it sounds like a hoot.
I wanna ask you if you've gigged it but the point is prob'ly moot.
MonkyMonk729 you’re a poet. And didn’t know it
“How can I find an amp like that!” 🤣🤣🤣
Excellent combination of Fender clean and Boogie-esque cascading gain. Is there enough clean headroom for live playing? Or would you have to get a more efficient speaker?
it will be close, but for small gigs the clean should work
Please demo a prosonic head agent the super sonic. It may have channel switch pop, if its a older model. Bet you will keep the prosonic!
great info! thanks for taking the time.
What about comparing supersonic overdive with, let's say, hot rod clean channel plus a good pedal overdrive (808)...
That should have been "Deluxe Reverb RI"...although I did have some 5E3 clones, as well.
Philip I can always count on your videos to be objective and informative. Looking for a 20-50 watt head under $1k.
Philip. If You have money only for one amp, which You will choose? California tweed or Supersonic 22? Thanks
This guy must be a bazillionaire
Would you really keep the SS22 over your mark v:25? Is the SS22 too loud for bedroom practice? I have a Mark V:25 with a volume pedal and it sounds great at low volume. Thanks for the review!
Does the looper lose the loop when you turn it off and on... or is the original loop still there. If so can you dump the original loop and replace it?
Phillip, Do you know why the Deluxe Reverb combo is 1" deeper than the Super sonic. The super sonic cabinet is only about 8.5" deep. Seems like the SS is sacrificing some tone there?
yeah this is exactly why I need an amp with an fx loop!
Weird question, did the amp you had previously that "popped" have the other logo that they put on this amp? More of a flat block text vs the swooshy script style fender logo? Thanks
Christopher Zatzke That's the SS60 logo. The SS22 is more swoopy and cursive looking.
I'm looking an amplifier with that kind of sound what you're talking about (thicker, fuller, fat), What amplifiers (many options) can give you that tone with 1500$? I need that clean tone but, I need that this one do metal too (pedal or distortion). What do you think?
How would you compare the Supersonic 22 Combo to the Bassbreaker 15 Combo. If you could only have one which and why?
Love your reviews, Keep it up.
Pretty Funny I have 2 as well. Same situation.
Is it good for r&b?
