I feel like I've noticed a trend in a lot of Eric's OTB games against strong players; he seems to often get ahead out of the opening, and is generally better prepped than his opponents, but he seems to lose ground fairly consistently in the midgames (at least in his losses). I feel like I see a lot more losses from midgame mistakes than from starting behind out of the opening.
You are correct. I would like to add that I noticed that Eric burns much of his time in the midgame on calculating lines even though he is ahead in the position. That leads to mistakes later on because he is under pressure due to the clock ticking while his opponents are just defending knowing that Eric takes too much time on 2 or 3 moves in the middle game. Not once in this run did I see his opponent win tactically. It is always Eric low on time, makes mistakes and then lose. That is something that he needs to work on mentally. Sometimes the best move might be just to conserve time, play a simple move and let your opponent use their clock. But aside from winning and losing, Eric is a role model for graciousness. His chess commentary even when he is talking about a loss is great to watch and very educational.
That was a beautiful game and it's sad we didn't see the attack play out as planned! But I appreaciate your energy and positive attitude and I hope we're gonna see a game like this again very soon with a happy ending!
Love the calm and laid-back explanations of actually aggressive piece play. Always imagining Eric sipping some tea while casually ripping apart his opponent on the board.
Thanks to you Eric, I've finally crossed 1200 for the first time last week. Now 1223 after playing chess for three years. I'm aware that's slow progress, but I'm proud nonetheless. 8:41 Instinctively, Qh4 Nf6 Rh8+ Ng8 Qh7 looks really strong, continuing initiative and clogging up Black's Kingside. Ofc after Nf6 Black can now run with Rh8+ Ke7 but Rh7 creates 2 pins which can only be escaped by repeating, and Kd8 gives up the 7th rank with Rxg7 with initiative on the Bishop on b7. Sure, it's not concrete, but it's less committal than trading Knights for no strategic benefit that I can see
Oh Qh4 ended up being played resulting in a similar state but without the Knights. The difference is that the f6 Knight is only defended by a pawn but White traded pieces while down material hmm... Bb5 is an idea I had as well, but I felt that unless it was possible before Nf6, it's too slow, too weak
GG time management is defiantly at least 3 more steps removed during over the board tournaments great work by the opponent and thanks for the coverage very strong play
This is the worst kind of loss. It's sort of okay, when the opponent is just way better and overplays you from start to finish, I can live with that, I can't be the best in everything and I am not a pro chess player. But this one is different: you actually had the good attacking idea and made good moves for a very long time, keeping the pressure, but then just lost the thread, all the while there actually was a winning line. So having been right and dropping the ball is awful, I know.
He’s literally on recording, from the WORST angle possible if he’s trying to cheat by doing that. He knows this too. He twitches a lot throughout the match, adjusting his shirt etc. He’s just thinking lol
When a clock in in play, if the other player turns away and you move, do you NEED to tell him you have moved in case he thinks your clock is still going? or its his responsibility to watch all the time which i guessing it is....
there's a pattern with your games, you fall behind on time, but then you catch up at the end. At first I thought it was because of streaming/commentating, but you run into this in live gmaes like this too. I think if you manage your time a bit better, you could see some big results. Just my two cents, I'm not even close to this level lol
Never trade when you’re attacking (except for a specific purpose)! Even if you dont see the follow-up, you’re attacking and trading only helps the opponent untangle the position! LOVE the aggression though 💪 Thats how you should always play Eric, except dont ever retreat, attack attack attack.

18:30 Oof engine hates Rh7, makes sense, turns out the traded off Knight was the key after all
I saw that Nxh7 is bad for Black, but I guess I couldn't determine that moving the Rook and running the King was awful as well in time
