    • @AdvanceDrivingSchool
      @AdvanceDrivingSchool  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      This test was just for fun (and the video) but since he was given a few 'serious faults' he wouldn't have passed a real Driving Test on this occasion.

    • @TillOverHill
      @TillOverHill 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not from the UK but I wanted clarification on a couple of notes as I am trying to improve my driving too.
      You gave him a serious fault for accelerating past 30, 10 meters earlier from the 40 zone start in a straight road with no crossings, turns, and with fences to the sides. Is that realistic? For I cannot imagine anything serious can happen in 10 meters there, it just seems like an unrealistic standard.
      Next, I realised you marked semi-serious faults on many occasions for the driver not checking his blind spots. You have extra wide angle addons on both your side mirrors and the driver has checked his mirrors on every single occasion where you had marked him for errors. Are those not wide angle addon mirrors as I am thinking here, or do you not think checking mirrors and signalling alone really are insufficient when pulling out?
      Finally, in the dual carriage way when you told the driver to get ready to pull out he signaled and switched back to the left lane right away; where you marked him for following too closely and that he was at serious fault - even though the driver braked and let the distance increase right away. The only way from your stand point where he would not have switched lanes and also have an acceptable following distance is if he had slowed down in the right lane instead. Is that not a bigger risk in the on going traffic? The driver had at least a second in between when he first pulled to the left lane, should that not be acceptable in that specific circumstance as he also braked right after?
      Thank you for your time.

    • @AdvanceDrivingSchool
      @AdvanceDrivingSchool  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No problem.
      It might seem picky for the speeding fault, but rules are rules. Should we allow speeding 20, 50, or 100 metres before the speed limit increases? We are always strict on speed limits, as they are there for a reason and 'bending the rules' on a Driving Test doesn't look good.
      The wide-angle mirrors are good, but they still don't give 360 degree coverage around the car, so we should still look around through the windows before moving off. Our Highway Code (in the UK) says we should do this, so of course an examiner will be looking out for it on the test.
      When we entered the dual carriageway the driver was told that he was going to be on there for about 3 miles, which allows him to plan ahead. So at about 2.5 miles, he chose to overtake a long line of traffic - where we then told him to take the next exit. He chose to pull in behind the last car immediately, far too close for safety at quite a high speed. The Highway Code states that we should always follow other traffic at least 2 seconds behind, so we can expect to be given a fault if we break this rule. We would have checked our mirrors, seen that there was no traffic behind, eased off the power to gently reduce speed, before returning to lane 1 with a safe following distance. Another option would be to continue in lane 2 and miss the next exit - which is not marked as a fault on the test as long as we remain safe.
      On a real Driving Test a real examiner may have a different opinion in these situations and choose to overlook these faults, but since the purpose of a mock test is to identify any faults we have so that we can improve our driving, we always mark any faults that we identify firmly.

      I passed my test in the UK less than a year ago and I can tell you now that it would be harder for experienced drivers to pass another driving test than it is for new learners. Drivers with experience pick up bad habits, e.g. don't check mirrors at appropriate times, not shuffling the steering wheel when turning..etc.... Not saying its easy for first time learners but I passed first time less than a year ago and im a worse driver ,"by the book", compared to what I am now. Could just be me but that my opinion anyway

      That child is gonna be hit and probably die at 20 mph or 30 mph, let's be honest. At best 20 mph gives you better braking distance, but it's a difference of 10-15 foot for most cars these days, which is about a car length. It would only make a difference in the worst case scenario (stepping right out in front of you).

      I already had a U.K. license but after 6 months you're supposed to get a California license when you live there, they allowed me to get a few more questions wrong on the theory because I was a foreign license holder, I passed but only just, one more wrong answer was a fail. On the practical test the first thing I did was pull out on someone, he wasn't super close but you could visibly see him braking hahah, she asked me why I did that, I told her I was nervous and hadn't taken a test in years, I thought "ohh man thats it failed", I carried on as best I could, we had probably gone through about 3 or 4 stop sign=s so far and the examiner said "you know the law about stopping behind the line at stop signs right?", I said "yes", (I was so used to pulling past the line to see which everyone does that I honestly didn't know for sure that was the law) she said "well, ya better doing it you're on yer test" hahahaha, then theres a law where you can turn right on a red if its clear, I did this and at the same moment someone else was doing a u turn from the other side of the road, both of us stopped and sat in the middle of the junction the for ages haha, I forget who went first probably him, so there was that too, I'm not kidding, the whole way round she was picking faults in my driving, when we got back she told me I had passed, I said I thought I must have failed and swear god she said "it was fine you didn't do anything deadly"!!!!! It was really funny, the thing is I wouldn't of cared if I failed really because it was done in my own car and it was either free or extremely cheap, I think there may have been a small fee

      Also I'll add the theory is tough because its written in that sort of "motoring language" which I don't really understand in England, you know, all that near side/off side kinda bollox which you can kinda work out/make guesses at, but Americian motoring language is impossible to decipher if you're not from there, they ask questions but on a good few of them I couldn't picture in my mind what the eff they were on about, it was like if this guy is yielding black bla bla, it was multiple choice and I think I must have got lucky on a few pure guesses. I passed in England in 94 and all it was were a few questions at the end, no theory as such

    the serious fault for safe following distance on the dual carriageway was harsh. The driver had just pulled into lane 2 to overtake when he was told to take the next exit. There was a series of cars he would need to pass before he would find a 2 second gap and realistically he would need to exceed the speed limit to do so or slow down in lane 2. Not sure if slowing down in lane 2 could have been done safely or not. Also he dropped back as soon as he re entered lane 1. Love the videos by the way, and I would have failed on the first 20 zone as well.

    • @AdvanceDrivingSchool
      @AdvanceDrivingSchool  6 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      It was definitely a tough situation, but we should never place ourselves in danger by choosing to follow the other car so closely. We could have reduced speed in lane 2 before returning to lane 1 at a safe following distance, or continued to overtake in lane 2. If the overtake could not be completed before the next exit then it's fine miss the intended exit and continue on the dual carriageway.

    • @kevsal7346

      Kevin Salim Unfortunately thats what happens and students do fail their test for it. I was taken on a dual carriageway and i was in lane 2 over taking cars, the examiner told me to take the next exit off but a car in lane 1 kept speeding up, then slowing down, then speeding up again so I couldn’t overtake him, finally managed to overtake them but I didn’t leave enough of a safe gap and picked up a serious for planning. The problem was the dual carriageway drops from national speed limit to 50mph for no reason. Pulled into the test centre and found out he was the head examiner and he said “thats the only thing that let you down, please redo your test asap and i hope you get a cancellation” my instructor said he’s never said that to anyone of her students before. Redone the test 2 weeks later and passed with only 3 minors.

      The 'Right Reverse' manoeuvre caused a lot of debate when introduced onto the UK Driving Test. The test candidate is asked to stop on the right side of the road, then reverse back two car lengths, before driving on again. It's not about turning the around, but checking they can control the car precisely whilst keeping good observations all around the car. We have covered it fully in another video if you would like more details.

      I'm still wondering what blind spot are you people talking about, if you have a blind spot on a normal car, not a truck, not a van, a car, then your mirrors aren't in their correct position because there is no blind spot on cars, unless you want to include something hiding below the side and rear windows or below the front bumper.
      The problem is many people use the side mirrors in the incorrect position, you're not supposed to see your own car in the side mirrors. If they're adjusted as intended the transition between the inside mirror, the side mirror and your peripheral vision when a car overtakes you, has no blind spots.

Learning in the slowest, smallest car on the market gives new drivers a false sense of security, and they then move on to drive larger, more powerful cars, and find it hard to transfer parking or speed control skills.

My head is like a giant map with photographic memory although a lot of people arent like this so its hard to work out what turnings people should do and on tests its all directions and sat navs which can be confusing especially as people have to concentrate on other things to pass tests.

    And it's amazing just how quickly some young, evidently new drivers lose those skills!
    Personally, I'm glad the test is much harder than it used to be, it needs to be. Cars are swifter and quieter, road details are more complicated: but the hazards stay the same.
    I first took lessons 35 years ago, had a bad experience right before my test, and I failed big time.
    (Oh, and for those that don't know - THE TEST WAS A BOX-TICKING EXERCISE 35 YEARS AGO TOO!!)
    I didn't have the money to carry on AT THE TIME, dropped my lessons until 18 months ago - to find the Highway Code had grown 4-5 times the size. Back during my 1st lessons, mini-roundabouts were new. Since then, spiral roundabouts have been introduced - and no friends of my age group (and older) knew what they were!
    In California, I have friends who retake their test every 3 years: state law. It wouldn't be a bad idea to introduce a similar system here. It would force a lot of bad drivers to retake lessons, improve their skills, learn what's new, and take another test.

    4:50 that would be a pretty much instant fail in my country (Spain). You're not allowed to exit a roundabout from the inner lane (I understand this roundabout has 2 lanes? Even if it had only one, entering the road again on that lane would be at least a serious fault)

    • @ronnie2367
      @ronnie2367 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      In UK, it is different. I also just learnt that because I got mine in NL. The logic behind it is that in UK you can't enter a roundabout if there is a vehicle in any lane of the roundabout (including the inside lane), so that if one is in the roundabout, he doesn't need to worry about cutting any others when moving outward.
      In Europe, however you can enter a roundabout if there is a vehicle in the inside lane, given that you will only use the outside lane. It also means that when you move outward from the inside lane you must watch out. And it is allowed to overtaking on the right in a roundabout.

      Aiden Dudley dont lie. You would fail as well. Driving tests are all about ticking boxes and being extremely picky even if you are a decent driver.
      You wont be that nit-picky in everyday driving, just make sure you dont kill anyone or become a hazard then its fine.

    Didn't always check his blind spots when pulling off... instant fail. I've just booked my 3rd test. This time I have chosen it when traffic is minimal and giving myself a few more lessons to clean up my mistakes. Advice to everyone... don't focus too much on manoeuvres, focus on roundabouts, one ways and junctions... and be vigilant near schools, 20mph.

    Speed demon. Not checking blind spots. I'd have thought that not checking your blind spots was grounds for a serious fault.

    Why did it say at 18:12 “serious fault (37 in a 30)” when on the road it said 40 so he wasn’t speeding!!

  • @expecttheunexpected5288
    @expecttheunexpected5288 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    At 18:08 he got a serious fault for exceeding the speed limit of 30 going into a 40 zone. My instructor has told me that it is okay to accelerate up to the speed limit (if safe to do so)when the maximum speed limit is increasing as long as you do so within around 15 car lengths of the change of speed sign? Is this then not true and I would get a serious fault for doing so?

    • @AdvanceDrivingSchool
      @AdvanceDrivingSchool  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The speed limit doesn’t change until we reach the sign so we can’t legally speed up until then. You might get away with accelerating earlier after passing, but we can’t recommend doing it in your test!

  • @gavingavin4572
    @gavingavin4572 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    18:10 the speed limit is 40 not 30 so he didn’t make a serious fault

    • @AdvanceDrivingSchool
      @AdvanceDrivingSchool  6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      No, the limit was 30. The 40 limit only starts at the 40 sign!

    Took my BE (trailer) licens last year after 24 years of driving after getting my B licens. 1 hour with intructor and 1 hour at the test with no fails or negative driving. They loved my driving with no bad habits. I where shure there would be some bad habits, but no. Its all about beeing objective and not driving like you are in a rapvideo or like a primadonna 😂.

    The issue i find with driving test is, its highly focused on theoretical side while ignoring practica side. The only reason they would do is to help government earn extra cash. For example, 3 point turn or paralell parking, sometime even for a professional it might not be up to standard of so called DVLA standard due to car size, road condition, location. And ofcourse there are other issue i find with driving test.

    Interesting to watch - and I picked up on his mistakes and will benefit from these when i go for my first driving test . I think every qualified full licence driver would benefit from extra driving lessons and should be mandatory every 5 - 10 years because as shown in this video - Even experienced drivers can make mistakes and mistakes can sadly cost lives .

      @cameronleehorace 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It makes no sense to me that the driving licence is valid until you are 70 without any retest. Retests should be every 10 years in my opinion. So many drivers not at the standard. Apart from the obvious mistakes made this driver in the video is much more capable than most drivers on the road.

    4:21 In a real test are you allowed to crawl like that to avoid stopping at a red, it's a cheat to avoid demonstrating your stop/start procedure?

    • @AdvanceDrivingSchool
      @AdvanceDrivingSchool  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      We wouldn't consider it a problem if it's only for a moment - just don't do it excessively as it could annoy following drivers. There will always be a proper hill start on the test somewhere, so you'll still have to demonstrate you hill start technique at some point.

    Could not agree more. Every driver over 70 should be made to do an assessment like this. He drove too fast and his control of the steering wheel was pretty scary at times.

    That was a tricky route. I am sure many people either fail or will fail on this test route; full of twists and turns and potential hazards

    • @AdvanceDrivingSchool
      @AdvanceDrivingSchool  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      At our local Driving Test centre (Bury St Edmunds) this is a pretty typical route. There are 20 different routes that the examiners can use, and they all use a mixture of different types of road and hazards. The average pass rate is just under 50% (about the same as the national average) so it shows that you have to be well prepared before attempting the test!

      There's an old instructor's adage and this video illustrates it perfectly: people only learn to drive _badly_ once they've passed the test.
