An important point about Roshar - it has less gravity than Earth (about 70% as strong as Earth's gravity), and a higher concentration of Oxygen in the atmosphere. These two factors combine to allow things like men carrying these huge, chasm-spanning bridges to be physically possible at all, and partially explains why Rosharians much prefer to use Stormlight-infused Gemstones for light instead of candles, lanterns, torches, and so on. All that extra Oxygen makes lighting any fire far more risky than it would be here on Earth. Why deal with extra-dangerous fire when you can store light for weeks or even months in small cut gemstones encased in clear glass?
@@GerryBolger Finished RoW a couple months ago. Occasionally ill think back like how did that end... And have another O SHIT moment every time thinking on the ending. Incredible. So pumped for book 5
I really like the interludes because they provide a glimpse into the wonderful world of Roshar. For example, the giant turtle island stuff is one of my favorite parts of the series!
I just wanted to say how much I enjoy your videos. I watch a lot of fantasy and video game lore channels, but the ambiance you create in your videos through the music, animations, transitions, and editing is amazing. I know how much work that can be, so just wanted to let you know it is appreciated!
One of the beautiful aspects of Roshar is the connections and bonds between life and nature, and megafauna specifically has an interesting interaction with spren. During a couple of scenes where Chasmfiends are present, you can see little arrow-like Spren whizzing around them. The "luckspren" as they're called create a mutualistic bond that allows for the Chasmfiends massive growth, keeping the creature from crushing under its own weight. Little things like this are what flesh out this otherworldly planet and make it feel so grounded.
Now that's how you get people interested in The Stormlight Archive. When I first started the series, I was a bit overwhelmed by the magnitude of how alien Roshar is. It took me a while but I eventually "got" Roshar and its unique ecosystem. Had I seen this video beforehand, I'd definitely be intrigued.
Superb topics aside, I just wanted to say how wonderfully paced and edited your content is. Truly such top tier professional edits and commentary. You're doing such a good job
I totally agree. I love how deeply realized your stormlight videos are.. I find you have a different angle and really explore layers of the books that exemplify why I can reread this series over and over.
Thanks for the video. My first Sanderson book was Way of kings. ….I had to read the intro at least 3 times. It was so confusing… but I’m persistent … and this has become my favorite series. I have read the books at least 3 times. Each time I read them I discover something new. Needless to say this video would have been a great help. 😊
My sister is upset at me because I let my 5 year old niece look at the art in the hard cover books. She then asked if I would read it to her. After I started I loaned her my paper back. My sister said sure, she would read it to her then she saw how thick it was. And that it was part one of 5. And only the first era. I then tried to convince her she'd probably like it.
That's very cute. Love getting kids into reading. I read White Fang and The Diary of Anne Frank by 7, so you're probably safer with a Brandon Sanderson book! No, my mom did not want me to read them, they were her books which I borrowed secretly. 😂
I’m an audiobook listener and never knew how the calendar worked or took the time to look it up-that’s so cool!! Ahh that’s so cool. Totally agree, all these details add up to something absolutely immersive!
It's so great to have you "back" again! Every time a new book comes out in the series I start over and read all of the prior ones again.... this makes me want to jump the gun and read them all now (and then probably again before the next one comes!) - great overview of this world!
Re-reading Stormlight now, and yes, everything about this world is so beautiful and foreign and colorful and just MAGICAL. And that's just the world. The characters are also some of the most interesting, beautifully complex characters you will ever meet. I feel like this series was tailor made to meet everything I never even knew I needed in a series. 😆❤️
I’ve really been enjoying the foreshadowing I’ve noticed through my re-read, that and all the details I’d missed the first time. Such a good book and series
The setting and world building of Stormlight Archive really are amazing. Your video has made me want to reread the series...for a 4th time! I can't just keep rereading the same series over and over, but I want to! 😆
I loved this video! The whole series is so big and there's so many small details, I love your videos where you just talk about the things you're just excited and interested about. It's the closest I get to being able to nerding out about the lore and world in the books. Glad to see another video again. Enjoy the re read! Quick edit, I agree it's almost impossible to simply describe spren to someone who's not read the books. I think you did a great job talking about the books in a non detailed/spoiler way. It's so massive it's hard to pin down exactly what to talk about in a way that doesn't require a large wall of information lol
Also, if you want a really unique world, you should check out the winnowing flame trilogy by Jen Williams, book one (the ninth rain) really blew me away
I adore your videos. I feel less alone in France since I discovered your channel. In France , the french booktubeurs don’t speak about the lore of Roshar, they don’t make summaries of the events, they never do a real or deep analysis of this masterpiece. They only give their feelings and the number of pages they read, they never want to spoil so they don’t give interesting informations , they don’t help you to understand the different elements. But you , you do all that with such an amazing understanding, and you share it with others, it’s incredible. Did you read the manga Berserk ? I recommand it to you. The main character named Guts and Puck are Similar to Kaladin and Syl in such a way. And I adore Guts like I adore Kaladin. The characters and the world are amazing and the art is such mindblowing. Sorry for my english. I don’t really know how to speak english. But I think you will understand me
I want to read Berserk so bad! I see there are around 10 massive volumes that are 60 euro each in my country so the price has been the reason I haven't started yet :(
I think Sanderson should be described as a Sci-Fantasy writer. His worlds seem so plausible from a science perspective if you remove the magical elements. As a scientist myself I can't wait to read this series.
Another great video! I love rereading these books, so much foreshadowing and details to discover. Glad to see you back in Roshar! ETA: great artwork choices, as always 👍
I can recommend the audiobooks. I've already listened to all of Stormlight this year once and just started Oathbringer on my second run this year. (on top of the new books that came out, just finished secret project 2 yesterday) The 2 main benefits of it are: 1) If you're decent at multitasking, you can listen to it while driving, shopping, working out, cleaning up or cooking. It's easy to get thru a few hours each day just using time where your brain is mostly idle otherwise. 2) You can speed it up! Imo the narrators read really really slowly, so 1.3x is what I'd consider normal, but you can go all the way up to 2x speed, especially on the books that you've already read several times.
Something I thought about spren just yesterday .. is that they are kind of like the demon/ angel on the shoulder.. always giving you advice but your the only one that hears them ... interesting concept!
After all the times I've read and watched reviews about Stormlight, there's still so much I don't know about the Cosmere! It's so rich and deep! I learn so much every time I watch a new one of your videos!!!
I love your Stormlight deep dives! I love this series so much. So so much more depth to discover on a re-read! The world building is first class, maybe even approaching that of Tolkien?
I really hope that when we get an adaptation, they will capture this feeling you gave in this video. I just finished the Elantris audiobook in my effort to read through the entire cosmere, so perhaps it's time to continue my Stomlight re-read and pick up WoR - you really made me want to go back to Roshar!
Wait a minute, I never caught the color of the moons (Spoilers below) . . . . . . . . . . Tress has me more intrested in the moons around the worlds. These three moons also coincide with the colors for Honor, cultivation, and odium. I really have to wondering how that plays together in the grand scheme of things
Im reading Rythm of War right now and really enjoying your content! Ive noticed that your videos on SLA are split into a couple of playlists, which makes finding them harder. Now that RoW has been out a while, maybe its time to fold the "leadup to RoW" playlist into your SLA playlist? (Eg the Herald videos should be in there as part of the deep lore and info of the world)
I'm working my way through the main Malazan sequence atm, with the plan to be done and have some time to re-read Stormlight before book 5 comes out. Looking forward to being back on Roshar!
I listen to the books because I am bad at reading and understand things better when I listen, and there are some things that I never quite understood that I learned from this video when seeing it visually.

I like that "Chicken" just means bird in the book. I wonder how that happened in that world.
