The deep dive on Lou Gehrig cracked me up, I was not expecting to see Brooke deep dive on ALS. My dad died of ALS and ironically was in the fraternity that Lou Gehrig was in, so his philanthropy that they raised money for throughout college was ALS Association! So I of course did all my school reports/projects on Lou Gehrig lol! We actually started a foundation in my dad’s name to help the families of ALS patients.
The animals have stopped talking because they are being put in cages. When they have the lion cub, the professor says something about how because they put him in a cage this young, he will never even learn to speak. They are torturing and scaring them into hiding. Oppression will make anyone silent.
Hey Brooke!! My grandmother just passed away from ALS and I didn’t know much about it before she got diagnosed. Thank you for bringing more awareness! The ALS Association is who I’d suggest donating to, they supported her through every step of the way and we are so thankful for them. She only lived less than a year from when she started to lose function of anything. Pretty crazy. Anyways, love this pod and you! ❤
Brooke my love, you must read Tuesdays with Morrie. Such a good book focused around a man with ALS and his former student. Life changing book dare I say
Brooke pls tell me you’ve seen that clip of an interviewer telling Jeff goldblum and Jonathan Bailey that “people online are addicted to you young men” 😭
I also want to comment that I love the cozy set up but miss Izzy and Kenny being there with you!!! of course i love this pod regardless but miss hearing their commentary with Brooke
In regards to animals speaking- madame M can read some of the Grimmery! I assumed she is trying and making some progress on that. As well as cages being introduced and implemented to prevent any progress on animals speaking
It feels sadistic to even mention this but I feel I must Brooke: eating raw fish aka SUSHI is by far one of the biggest ways you can expose yourself to mercury/heavy metals via food due to biomagnification
brooke i implore you to read holly madison’s “down the rabbit hole” she was hefs longtime main girlfriend and she describes her life living in the mansion which was extremely traumatic
Came to the comments because I also have seen wicked 3 times; here’s my take on the animals! They are taking away their jobs and positions of power and therefore taking away their voice’s metaphorically, but the less they are allowed to use their voice, the more it will make them actually lose it. Thus Dr Dillamond bleating because he is having to hide, and the lion cub in the cage so that he will never learn to speak :)
Fun fact: Alex Haley went on to write Roots and Playboy actually has a history of publishing now-famous authors like Ronald Dahl, Margaret Atwood, Ray Bradbury and SO many more!
I think if you want a practical answer, you can make an assumption that Madame Morrible used her limited powers to stop the animals from speaking, but they need Elphaba to really seal the deal. But I think it's more of a symbolism of oppression. When you label a class of people as something bad, in this case the animals are portrayed as wild animals rather than civilized citizens, then you take away their humanity, their autonomy, and their voice. As we see in the play and the more so the movie, it was a slow erasure of animals until there were only a few left to speak up. It's definitely a political take on how labelling groups of people will make society view them as such. Unfortunately, we have many examples of that right now. Anyways now I'm sad and desperately need Part II!
I think with the talking animals it’s like they will be punished if they talk for animals that have learned how to talk and then with like baby animals like the lion they then just won’t learn to talk at all. (This is just how I interpreted it)
brookie i really want you to know that my grandpa's close friend dated hugh hefner in high school.... Please notice me!!!!!! im actually serious i would not make this up
A Little Life sucked bc it was so boring. 800+ pages of no character development, just descriptions of SH and a 50 year old man refusing to get help and constantly apologizing 🫠 like what’s the point

The codependent relationships from all individuals in this friend group make my heart happy
