This is a great performance, and it's live! No machines to adjust the pitch (human or instrument)! The quality of the musicianship shines through. On the piano, Billy Joel is masterful. It shows up well in this song. His voice is great in every song. His other musicians are amazing-all of them. I am enjoying and appreciating this one! Thanks for playing it.
I read somewhere that during Covid Billy Joel continued to pay his band, even though they could not work during the shut-down. He knew he had one of the best bands behind him in the business, and he wanted to ensure that they stayed with him for when they could perform again. I always compare Billy Joel to Elton John - many similarities, including those powerhouse musicians behind them. The two of them have even performed together, and are friends. Those songs are definitely a must-see! Great reaction for an awesome song!
Billy Joel did the last concert at Shea stadium. Paul McCartney was flying in and Billy wanted him to be on the stage with him. So the police were waiting for Paul to land gave him a police escort so that he could perform there also for the last concert. Evidently they're pretty tight. It always surprises me the stories I have in my head. I am 74 not a musician but grew up around musicians there was a lot going on in the 60s and I was there to watch a lot of it. A bit younger than my friends that were musicians because my boyfriend was two years older than me. So I was having to sit in the background and just watch. And I'm really glad about that. No drinking or drugs so I have a clear vision of all of it.
"I just got de ja vu" Yep, Billy put you back in a New York state of mind. Talk about a vibe, he doesn't need his little smoke machine, he transports you to a bar below a building on 57th street in Manhattan, and you can smell the bourbon being poured over ice. Great reaction, Lee, rock on!
Billy Joel is the GOAT! So talented and his song writing is top notch! GOODNIGHT SAIGON is one of my many favorites! Its about Vietnam and every time he sang it, he had veterans on stage with him singing the chorus. Much respect!
You need to react to "Prelude/Angry Young Man". Especially amazing, given he's playing with a broken left thumb (you can see the white bandaging in the video). He broke it in an accident suffered while he was riding his motorcycle. Live performance on Long Island.
No one has to convince me about Billy Joel. I still have 5 of his albums on vinyl. But my greatest memory and experience was the tour that he and Elton John did together with their dueling grand piano's facing each other on stage, and even Kiki Deein made an appearence. Billy and Elton, doing their own songs and then doing each other's songs and then doing a few of their songs simultaneously. I've easily done a 100 live concerts in my lifetime ever since 1968. But this was special because it was different. It wasn't like anything I'd seen before and most. Obviously to the greatest Rock hero piano play.
Did a master thesis on how he incorporates NY& LI into his songs. This was refreshing. My former life. Left NY for AZ @ age 26, permanently. Baby Grand is his duet with Ray Charles.
One of the all time great songs of any era. He is portraying Ray Charles in this performance which is his favorite artist. He recorded a song with Ray many years ago! Billy once said he was not crazy about his own voice! Lee you are so right about the music industry and how the corporate people always try to sell a certain image to the fans instead of letting the artists be themselves. That was the case 60 or even 70 years ago too!
Facing the sea, Boston to the left, to the right New York City. The East Coast is just fine. Particularly if you're in a "New York State of Mind"! Peace & Love, and the smog in the air above!
Lee i''m a born and raised New yorker my parents had a house in Putnam lake 10 mins on rte 6 to Brewster lived there for 5 years after leaving NYC in 1979 and then returning afer getting married and living in westchester county Mt Vernon right next to the Bronx. I love NY and miss it but it has changed alot since i was lived there. I live in maryland now I know you lived here too.
Hi LEE.... This concert on TOGWT was from 1978. That was the programme to see serious music back in my day... Album music.. not the hits of the day That isn't a chalk outline of a body in the background.. it is an image from the opening credits and it's a star-kicker, kicking these stars your way...!!
Thanks for the reaction to my all time favorite, Billy Joel. You get it all with Billy, great writing, lyrics, singing, playing and performing. You had the band members right, although I think just Liberty, Richie, Russell and Doug, the regular band members, were there. The others were on the album. This is a great early performance by Billy. At 75 he still gives a great concert to sold out crowds and his voice has gotten even better with age.
If you get to see the greats from the 40-50 s they were alway these Hep Cats that had a smoke and an outsider too cool quality. Those guy were Joel’s heroes . Music the Arts are their own reward, be true to what you love to do
Side Note: Billy was born on Long Island (about 40 minutes outside New York City). He often records shows in the New York metro, at either the Nassau Coliseum, or in The City at Madison Square Garden. He's a New Yorker through and through, and when he sings songs like "New York State Of Mind" or "I Saw The Lights Go Out On Broadway", he's singing from the heart, and he's often singing to his people, there in New York. It's a wonderful synergy.
Check out the duet he did with Tony Bennett at Shea Stadium. Last concert before they closed the home of the Mets and the famous Beatles appearance in '65.
So many great hits from Billy it is hard to pick one but I love the lyrics to Only the Good Die Young. So fun and so real to life. For serious sincerity, try And So It Goes.
Another great pick Gail. One of my favorite Billy Joel songs, the piano and sax are great! Heard you say you lived in Buffalo for a couple of months Lee. Have lived here my whole life. A great place to be!
I was lucky to see Billy Joel three times. He IS the piano man! Another great sax solo to check out, the Big Man Clarence Clemons live in New York on Bruce Springsteen’s “Jungleland”
I love the "Turnstiles" album (it's in my top 20), but me listening to it repeatedly had an odd side effect: everyone assumed I was a big Billy Joel fan, and kept giving me more of his albums (seven, in fact, by the time they were done). All had some good-to-great songs on them, but there were none I wanted to keep listening to all the way through, and I was (and am) mainly an album listener, so they sat on the shelf. And I kept on listening to "Turnstiles"...
La maggior parte ... Specialmente i più giovani... Seguo no la musica seguendo mode o personaggi eccentrici .... Piano Man è tutto talento e musicalità ... Il più completo in assoluto
Liberty Devito is in a percussionist lane all his own. That’s not Ritchie on Sax in that performance. Find as many live clips as you can from the sweet spot in Billy’s career. Btw, he played Shea Stadium the night before it was torn down. Perfect message sent for a Long Island kid to play for the home crowd. Checkout the song he wrote for, and recorded with Ray Charles (in Ray’s style) called “Baby Grand.” It’s a must.
We all know how great Billy's songs were but sometimes we forget he was a fantastic composer and piano player.
Billy Joel's whole catalog is gold but if I never get to hear anything other than this particular performance till the day I die, I'm happy.
Billy doing his best Ray Charles imitation..
Joel played this live for the televised national concert in support of first responders after 9/11, and a nation wept harder.
Beautifully said!
Billy Joel is a super talented artist!
incase you didnt notice this is a tribute to Ray Charles and Georgia on my mind
This is phenomenal! That's my opinion! ❤❤
Love Billy one of the greatest artist of our time! A gift from God, doing what he was created to do! Seems he was channelling Ray Charles. Thanks
One of the great story tellers!
This is a great performance, and it's live! No machines to adjust the pitch (human or instrument)! The quality of the musicianship shines through. On the piano, Billy Joel is masterful. Billy's love letter to his home town. Great reaction Lee.
"I just got de ja vu"

This man has such an ability to create atmosphere when he performs. Musical artistry.
Billy Joel is the GOAT! So talented and his song writing is top notch! GOODNIGHT SAIGON is one of my many favorites! Its about Vietnam and every time he sang it, he had veterans on stage with him singing the chorus. Much respect!
I adore that song. The way he articulates the lyrics just adds to the flavor of the song. ...and they were SHARP, as sharp as KNIVES..
Ahhhh, this was such a great choice Gail ❤
Such a beautiful song
Amazing song and performance.
You need to react to "Prelude/Angry Young Man".

He broke it in an accident suffered while he was riding his motorcycle.
Live performance on Long Island.

What an homage to my fellow Georgian, Ray Charles! DeVito is a helluva drummer.... And Richie could BLOW!
Did a master thesis on how he incorporates NY& LI into his songs. This was refreshing. My former life. Left NY for AZ @ age 26, permanently. Baby Grand is his duet with Ray Charles.
One of my favorite things about Billy Joel is the variety of subjects he sings about. I received Glass Houses for my 16th birthday. Still a favorite.
Being from Queens, NY I love this song and Billy

Good bless William Martin Joel ... - my favorite album is 52ND STREET, favorite song GOOD NIGHT, SAIGON. 🙏🏻❤
Enjoy the Billy Joel ride. He's a genius..so versatile. Every song is different 😊❤😂🎉😮😅😊😊😊😊😊😊
☮️💙💙💙🔥🔥😎thank you!
Facing the sea, Boston to the left, to the right New York City. The East Coast is just fine. Particularly if you're in a "New York State of Mind"! Peace & Love, and the smog in the air above!
I was lucky enough to see Billy and Elton in concert together.
Me too. What an experience!
Me too. Busch Stadium in St. Louis.
Me too! In Philly.

Your reaction was extremely intelligent and insightful. Subscribed.

New York! 💕
He’s the best of the best!!!
I love his songs AND his renditions of them. When he played with Sir Elton, I was in Heaven! Thank you, Lee ❤

Billy joel "live" sempre una goduria
Painting a mood with music. Unreal.

This performance is from 1978 and yes, that is Richie on saxophone.

Thanks for this one. Never listened to him much, but if he has more this good it’s time to start.
Captain Jack from his Songs in the Attic live album will rock you
Joel is a prolific song writer and has a huge catalog that is well worth diving into. The official video of Goodnight Saigon is a masterpiece!!
This is such a dynamic video
"Uptown Girl" -- tribute to "The Four Seasons".
I love NYC too. So much fun and a lot to see. 😊
Another great pick Gail. One of my favorite Billy Joel songs, the piano and sax are great! Heard you say you lived in Buffalo for a couple of months Lee. Have lived here my whole life. A great place to be!
Yup I lived there in the winter of 2017 lol lots of snow. Learned to drive in the snow there for sure. Thank you for watching my friend!
Best version of this song (imho)
Love this one.
Me too, fellow Lee. This was awesome.
Try his River Of Dreams for an entirely different side of his voice. He is an amazingly versatile talent.
Check out “Captain Jack” sometime in your future. 🍻🖖
Lord, he was cool!
I was lucky to see Billy Joel three times. He IS the piano man! Another great sax solo to check out, the Big Man Clarence Clemons live in New York on Bruce Springsteen’s “Jungleland”

It is so satisfying
I CAN NEVER LIVE TO FAR AWAY FROM NY
I never saw this live performance ... very nice
Come on people "Good Night Saigon next?
That is Richie Cannata! :)

virtuoso
I think, if you've ever really loved a woman, his _She's always a woman_ is one hell of a song.
This is a great song. I love NYC too🗽💗
Check out his TH-cam version of "Hey Girl" written by Carole King and Gerry Goffin. Gorgeous!
Turnstiles is my favourite BJ album. Amazing album.

The stranger.
He says he loves HAVING WRITTEN songs, but he hates WRITING them.

Actually, it is Richie Cannata
as a fellow long islander I love Billy, but my love for New York is fading fast...
No disrespect to the great Elton .He’s the Rocket Man. NOT the PIANO MAN
Talking about them, don't know if you ever did Gary Moore, "Still got the blues". Just to know what a guitarist can feel...
Drummer reacts to "Still Got The Blues" (Live) by Gary Moore

Comment. 🙂
No disrespect to any of Billy Joel's excellent musicians, but nothing matches Richie Cannata's sax and Liberty DeVitto's percussion.
Billy Joel is incredibly talented. And I'm happy to report that nobody I associate with cares in the least. He is just not it. Just not.
Cringe showboating
Can';t stand Billy Joel. Pass.
Me neither but this is one nice performance. Jazz Club…
