Looking forward to more videos - there's definitely a niche to be filled on TH-cam with more analytical (yet still humoursly cynical/sarcastic) videos of our road network. As another commenter said, northern Jago Hazzard for the roads!
You're bang on about the causes of congestion! Yeah, there are certainly too many cars on the road but chaos is exasperated by the amount of drivers who simply don't plan ahead in any way! Thoughts of a Birmingham bus driver here!
I work in Spinningfields and have to cross Deansgate all the time. The ability to cross at peak time has been improved massively. It has been done on the cheap without a doubt but the ambience around there is so much better now. During the day there is little traffic although most of the offices there have underground car parks and Kendal's has a multi storey behind it (hence the Chelsea tractors everywhere).
Signage “substantial compliance” with the Regs. I suspect those cars are all dropping off pedestrians? Very odd use of the cycle scoop; could there be any other reason for making the cycle track dart about like that? Cycle parking, for instance? We seem to have forgotten how to sign diversion routes….
I have done deliveries around Deansgate - multi-drop from a car. you do need to be able to keep moving and being able to get to next place. Also drivers might be collecting people from rail stations and hence cannot go out via ring road easily to get to sat naved destination
It's very hard to get to this location from Victoria station and the other stations nearby are better reached from Whitworth St. Given it's a self contained area the only traffic that should be there is residential and servicing such as deliveries, not people trying to short cut across the ring road.
As someone who came to Manchester for the first time in 10 years recently, frankly I found the city roads, layouts and signs to be confusing and overwhelming. I came back with a penalty fine for going down a road for taxis. With so many car parks set deep into the centre, I can understand why so many cars on the roads, as they are trying to park. I won't be returning in a hurry.
I do love bit of cycle infrastructure and should work wonderfully once it's fixed and drivers get used to the alternative routes however I do think it should be more permanent arrangements, but just like roads 'Build it and they will come' - a wise person once said
the long opening shot where the folks walking on the sidewalk (under the overpass ) have to walk out into the street to get around the two parked vehicles. It would be too bad if those vehicles got scratched
just from watching the video, I guess the reason for the bidirectional cycle lane is due to the parking/loading/taxi bay on the left ahead, they decided to put cyclists out of the dooring zone, by putting them on the other side of the road. It is odd thou
7:28 - guy on a quad bike?? 🤷♂️ I often think that people who run these big cities should take a trip to the Netherlands and see how the city centres there look. If I were a cyclist, I wouldn’t feel happy cycling through there
This video just makes me think “Northern Jago Hazzard”. Your voice in this video is very soothing, Bryn.
Great video Bryn, love the rants

Speaking as a Manchester resident I can't remember the last time I tried to drive down Deansgate and I can't imagine why anyone would.

I agree, it is much more pleasant now it isn't permanently lined with traffic jams. Just needs a proper public realm scheme to make it look good!

Deansgate is what I would like to go to. As I have never been to Manchester before.

Good review of Deansgate.

The car parks right in the city centre do not help matters at all, that's true.

A question for ya Bryn, is there any roads in the UK you actually like 😂 Also how's ya dad not seen him now for years.
You'll have to wait and see! 🤣 I'll pass on my regards too.
What is responsibility of Manchester City Council and Greater Manchester Authority ?
