  • This is why autofocus on wide angle lenses is really kind of pointless. Don't let the microprocessor think for you. Learn stuff.
"Nikon Film Cameras, Which one is right for you" is an e-book on Amazon by yours truly. It's three dollars worth of knowledge, guaranteed.

This is the FIRST time I ever clearly understood how to calculate and use the Hyperfocal Distance. Thank you very much. R S , Ontario, Canada

I always understood these markings to be the "Depth of Field Scale" since the hyperfocal distance of a given prime lens is fixed. Some lenses, such as those from the Irix brand, include a hyperfocal scale marking *in addition* to the DoF scale.
It's funny to me that many photographers used only to digital have no idea what that scale is; indeed it is almost always absent on modern lenses. Like you, I collect older Nikkors and find most of them incredible performers - all built like brick outhouses. Just picked up a mint 200mm f/4 AI for a modest amount of dosh given the sheer quality of that lens. Both that and the 135mm AI feel like Zeiss lenses in their build quality, feel and focus.

Couldn't agree more! I am wondering, though, how a hyperfocal scale would differ from a depth of field scale. I always used those terms interchangeably; perhaps I'm missing something.

@@BriansPhotoShow The hyperfocal marking just makes the process swifter, apparently. Marketing if you ask me - "hyperfocal" marked on a lens marks it out as special...not.
