I am originally from Scotland, but I moved to the US when I was 14. I love seeing your footage from Britain. Makes me a little homesick. You live in a very nice area to ride as far as I can see, minus the weather. I live in NE Massachusetts and I also have a nice area to ride in. The winter's up here get way colder than it did when I lived in Scotland so winter riding is tough. I like your ride for 5 miles and see what happens advice and will be using that to get out as much as I can. I also took your advice from about 9 months ago about what camera to buy to record my rides. I got the DJI action 3 and have just started to record my rides. Very happy with it so far.
Clothing and sweat levels are really hard to gauge. At certain temperatures I tend to sweat after 20 mins or so then get bitterly cold after an hour. I still keep going out and try different combinations of gear, sometimes I get it better than others. And slowing down a little helps.
If it's more than just a passing shower and not too windy I use a poncho, no condensation, keeps me warm and keeps me dry from the knees up. Worst thing about the cold for me is cold fingers, there have been times when I struggle to even open the front door because my fingers were so cold, I would not be able to fix a puncture at the roadside. So when it's that cold I use handlebar mitts or pogies. I do my daily food shop on my bike (4 to 6 miles round trip) so motivation to get out is not really a problem.
Can't imagine anything sadder then cycling in virtual reality, how depressing - that's something they draw in cartoons for mockery. There's an entire world out there! If it's horrible and cold, that's just unfortunately Britain. To coin the tired military expression; "embrace the suck". Wearing an entire tent, with a big flask of coffee and a waterproof on my camera in a soaking storm is great fun.
I don’t do rain if I can help it. Nov to March I use an ageing Genesis One Twenty road bike, it’s got an 8 speed hub gear so perfect for salty roads, but a big enough gear range for Home Counties riding. Lots seem to think the Nexus hub is a Mahle e-assist motor. I wish 😎

I've had some past experiences of trying to cycle on icy roads. Oh, boy..
Studded tires for ice and snow are game changers. From Edmonton Canada
They'd be worn out too fast over here because we don't get a consistent frost it's patchy black ice which in a way is worse.
@@Trevaricus We don’t have enough snow and ice here to justify changing tyres. Even really bad snow doesn’t usually last more than a week or two
