    The ceramic cartridges used in most inexpensive players is sometimes the problem, particularly with newer records which are generally cut 'hotter' than older ones, and also generally with a lot more heavy bass. Look for a turntable with a magnetic cartridge, which are almost always more compliant than ceramics. If you're dealing with older equipment with its original cartridge, be aware that the suspension of the cartridge (usually rubber) may have dried out and hardened, which can also affect compliance.
    Yes, by all means, make sure the record and needle are both clean. They can be dirty even if they're brand new. And yes, avoid the penny-on-the-tone-arm thing as much as possible; it should only be a last resort, and be aware that there's a far greater chance of damage to the record and/or needle if you do so.
    Sometimes it's just a defective needle. It might be that the needle wasn't 'cut' right, or the very tip of the needle might have broken off. Try another. When you buy a needle for a record player, buy two or three of them, and don't be afraid to swap them around to see if one does better than the other.

    Me looking at my old rickety ass record player/radio cabinet from the 1930’s that I’ve only been able to get to being barely functional: “bro I don’t know why this is skipping.”

      As heavy as most of those things track, I'm surprised it's even POSSIBLE for it to skip.

    Cleaning the record is really the most important part. I've bought several new records which skipped constantly when I first played them, even on my AT-LP60X, whose tonearm Audio-Technica specifically redesigned to help prevent it from skipping. But after I cleaned them with a carbon-fiber brush I noticed the amount of skipping reduced, and after several rounds of cleaning and playing, eventually the skipping had stopped entirely.
    To get rid of a few of the stubborn skips I had to carefully guide the tonearm to play through them by pushing back on it slightly so it wouldn't tend to jump ahead. This is caused by burrs of excess vinyl on the edges of the grooves which the stylus has to scrape away the first time it plays the record. Some records even mention in the liner notes that you should temporarily increase the tracking force the first time you play them in order to clean away the burrs from the grooves.

      Wash the vinyl BEFORE playing it ... and DO NOT put it back in the original paper sleeve order yourself some disk keeper sleeves .... they are anti static plastic sleeves made specifically to replace the paper sleeve ... I keep the paper sleeve if it has album art of course LOL stays nicely right beside the disc keeper

    Most pop music has strong bass lines and/or drum beats, something that these cheap cartridges can’t handle very well due to how loud they are in the recording causing them to skip. I’ve always found it ironic how they put the cheapest stylus option available on the turntable itself but include better replacement styli with the turntable. Why they don’t put the nicer stylus on initially is beyond me.

    • @xaenon

      I'm guessing it's a 'value added' strategy. Pay a low, low price for the basic commodity, have it shipped in bulk, add some inexpensive little trinket to make it seem like a 'better deal', pad the price a bit, box it up, and ship it to the stores.
      When I built, sold, and repaired computers, this was a strategy we often used. Instead of just selling a hard drive, we'd 'VAR' it by including improved warranty, free installation, file defragmentation, and transfer of data, and bump the price $20-30. That not only allowed us to buy bulk-packaged hard drivers (less expensive for great profit margin, but no retail packaging), but it got the computer physically into the shop so we could look it over and maybe point out that it might need more memory, make sure the fans are turning, etc.

    • @Recordology

      It all has to do with low cost of manufacture so they can sell them at a price that people only somewhat interested will take the plunge on something completely new to them.

    • @snewton47
      @snewton47 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Recordology True, but if it skips playing the music you like listening to, then it's more expensive.
      You have the cost of the record player you should have bought in the first place with a higher compliance magnetic cartridge + the cost of the "cheaper" one you initially purchased with low compliance ceramic cartridge.
      - Modern dance and electronic music can have very heavily modulated grooves which a ceramic cartridge will have a pretty hard time tracking accurately, also if its mis-tracking (while not skipping) it will increase the wear and groove damage substantially.
      I've got a Numark PT01 with a ceramic cartridge as well as a Rega RP40 .
      The PT01 runs on batteries and is great for single plays when crate digging, but it will skip and or damage heavily modulated dance tracks in a way that the RP40 and pretty much any turntable fitted with a higher compliance magnetic cartridge will not.
      I also have an Ortofon Concorde Pro cartridge on my SL1200, that tracks happily at 4g but has higher compliance than the PT01 cartridge, it does not damage records in the way the PT01 can when it meets a groove that it physically can not track.

    I mean honestly the problem is probably that the groove is throwing out the needle. The tonearm is pretty cheap on those suitcase players, and I doubt the average user is going to try and upgrade, so all in all I say use a penny unless you plan on being serious about records.

  • @MrBillmcminn
    @MrBillmcminn 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    If getting rid of skipping necessitates replacing the stylus get one with an elliptical profile, it will ride deeper in the groove than the conical styli that come with entry level record players that will also make it less prone to skipping on heavily modulated records such as the Lady Gaga you showed. If it’s an older record player that is skipping on a new record then the stylus has gotten dull and needs to be replaced

    I think the quality or condition of the tonearm and pivot plays a huge part. Not only does a good quality or condition pivot prevent skipping, it also vastly improved the depth and detail that's obtained from the record groove and prolong the life of the record causing minimal wear. Those poorly designed record players have so much play in the tonearm pivot. Modern seemingly better quality turntables can too. Vintage quality turntables like Technics SL-23 shouldn't, however someone online pointed out that they can, probably from rough handling, wear and tear. I checked mine and the play was where they said, on the down pivot. I was noticing some records sounding distorted or off and skipping. I swapped the same cartridge on the headshell to a vintage Toshiba SR-F440 turntable I've had in storage for years and the difference was night and day. No more distortion or skipping.

    • @7JANEWAY
      @7JANEWAY 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I use the small boxes you can purchase at Walmart. They cost less than $2 and are sturdy enough to hold the records. These boxes can hold upward to approximately 75 albums. I don't recommend the medium or large boxes, for the records don't fit into these boxes very well, due to their dimensions.
      In addition, I use both outer and inner sleeves for my records. The outer sleeves I use are clear and resealable. There are other types of plastic outer sleeves also available if you choose. I prefer the resealable ones so that my albums can come out, but the outer sleeve stays protected. One thing people may say about these is that the stickiness wears out after a few times. My answer is simple: get yourself some glue sticks. That way you can swipe the sticky area once with a glue stick and you're as good as new.

    My son has this issue on his PL-990 with a couple of his records. The main records are Information Society's self-titled release and Split Enz "True Colours" where they skip like crazy on side 1. I got my daughter a Kenwood KD-492F that doesn't have this issue. He takes really good care of his records & stylus. It might be the lighter tracking force on the Kenwood vs the Pioneer (1.5 vs 3.0 respectfully). Might try some way to adjust the tracking on the Pioneer if I can find out where to adjust this....

    • @kevinsvideodump
      @kevinsvideodump 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have the original laser-etched version of True Colours and it plays perfectly fine on my PL-990. But I can't guarantee that a modern re-release of it is anywhere near as well-mastered and well-pressed. The quality control of modern vinyl records is often quite poor, with warps, skips, scratches, and incorrectly sized or placed center holes all being common problems.

    Do you have any other tips that I could do to prevent my records from skipping? I have just bought a new record player (the Victrola suitcase player) and all of my vinyls skip. Actually skips at the same place every time. Rest of LP is fine. I've cleaned the vinyl few times with solution. All good advice except not a fan of a penny on the headshell. It works, but not good for your records. One thing people have to remember is new vinyl is generally cut with a lot more dynamic range then back when it was the main format. It used to be important that a record could play on just about any system. Nowadays if it'll play on a proper turntable they will cut it making some records hard to play on little all-in-one cheap record players.

    If a turntable tone arm tracks at crazy measures like 5-7 grams. It won't hurt the records. Originally, when records first came out, the suggested tracking force was supposed to be around 4-6 ounces. You heard me, ounces. So, most of the time it's dirt or a scratch on the record which causes it to skip. I started playing records on a cheaper turntable and I had no problems at all. Now, after going through 2 turntables (all different kinds) I found one that doesn't skip at all.

    Howdy again just saw the video it was top notch and very helpful for the new record player owners the only thing I noticed on several of your videos ,and let me add they are good and I like your enthusiasm want to apologize to you don't want you to think I am criticizing you but you often start and stop a record in the middle of play knowing that these type of record players have a heavy tracking force that kind of hurts the groove when you start up like that when I used to read magazines in early 70's I had stereo review they had a article about record care and one of them was never let a tonearm stop in middle of a song cause as it sits in groove u have all that weight and when u start it up it will slightly tear in to groove slowly wearing it out slowly.in my day that was a no no,especially when power goes out in the middle I will bang up any body part at the point of losing a arm or leg just to get to my turntable ti lift the tone arm ,you have less friction when you have a record spinning and you place the tone arm in middle of song then when you drop it in middle of a track then start it up you are not the only one who does this I have seen a lot of new vinyl lovers who do this not realizing the damage they are causing , if you do this once in while no harm or foul but why hurt the LP if you don't have to I once left a record on it stopped in middle of record I somehow tripped the circuit ,the tone arm was on record for maybe 15 to 20 minutes when I realized what I did if I could kick my self I would of when power came on it started playing till this day I here a slight pop when I play the spot the tone arm was in it is the only pop that you here when playing this album .it bothers me even now!!!
