Offspring of the meerkats at the Mundenhof in Freiburg (Germany)

At least 4 cubs were born on July 23 and showed themselves for the first time today. Yet the elaborate, lovingly designed new barn was only inaugurated on May 25 this year.
But some mysteries remain. Their sexes are still unknown, names accordingly not yet assigned. Also who exactly the father is, can not be said. So far, the group that moved to the Mundenhof in May consisted of one female and two brothers.
Not even the information about the date of birth is on record. The only thing that is certain is that on Sunday, July 23, the female Malkia withdrew with a fat belly into the litter box in the inner pen and was visibly slimmed down in the afternoon. Since then, the keepers had avoided the indoor pen and allowed the group as much rest as possible.
For the first few weeks, the baby meerkats are suckled by their mother, after which the group brings them food. When they are outside, they are shown what they can eat. Gradually, the group then teaches them to hunt and stand guard characteristically. At bedtime (which is not only at night in the meerkat house), the animals lie cuddled together as a group in their den.
If you want to see the young animals at the Mundenhof, you will soon have several opportunities to do so. The cubs will remain at Mundenhof; for the time being, there are no plans to release them to another zoo. Thanks to a camera in the outdoor enclosure, however, the cubs will also be able to be watched on screen at home. Since the young animals will only be in the indoor pen for another two to three weeks, the online audience will have to be patient for a while. Presumably from the end of August, however, the meerkat group will also provide plenty of entertainment online.
