This was such a great video! I was wondering if you had any tips about traveling with health issues? I was comfortable traveling alone but now it feels different. I have head pain, migraines, occasional brain fog and plenty of meds to keep track of. I loved the tip about how to get meds in advance. I was wondering if you have anything else you would like to share?

    • @taylorwynn
      @taylorwynn  2 ปีที่แล้ว +96

Yeah I didn't address in this video because it felt more niche, but some things I do:
-always have food incase I get a migraine and can't order/go out to get anything
-always make sure where I'm staying has a water kettle (for hot pack) or freezer if you use ice pack
-try to find one contact (friend of a friend or something) who lives in the country incase of emergency, but that's not always possible so honestly I just cross my fingers and hope I won't need to go to the hospital
-get meds in advance (and also check meds in the country you're in, because a lot of the time, depending on what you need you can actually just buy it cheaper without a prescription in a lot of places)
-I travel at my own pace and don't try to over-pack the itinerary. A lot of the times I cant do *everything* on my list, and miss out on things, but I try not to get frustrated with myself and body and just do what I can!
Also just want to note, at the beginning of my travels I definitely wavered for a couple weeks if I was able to do it or not, and ultimately decided that for me it's worth it to try, and just deal with the shitty situations that may come up. I've definitely gotten a migraine on a train, plane, and other super not ideal situations while by myself but I just try to get to where I'm going and find a bed asap when that happens and hope I don't puke on the road basically. For me, it's been worth it but it can definitely be challenging/intimidating so I understand completely. Best of luck xxx

      @lindatannock 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

@@tiffanysadlertlc I have gone from able-bodied and super fit to being disabled, and it's a challenge, but very doable to travel with health issues!
If you can't walk far, book wheelchair assistance well before your flight (not on the day), and/or any dietary requirements you may need on the flight for meals.
If you book a wheelchair they'll get you on the plane early, and meet you with a wheelchair at the other end, at the aircraft. Even if you don't need a chair but need assistance, they'll help you with what you need (I'm ex cabin crew).
Always take more meds than you need (I always carry extra, just in case I can't get home when planned).
It just needs a little more planning, and don't be scared to ask someone to help you plan things either! I'm taking my own chair on holiday next week (I can walk, but not far), so that'll be a new experience for me, and give me more freedom while I'm away.
Good luck. You've got this! 💖💖🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

I am right there with you…been traveling by myself for both business and pleasure since I was 26 and I’m 57 now! It is by far the best thing to experience and I always have an amazing time and I’ve never felt unsafe because I’m very aware of my surroundings and as an American I do NOT want to stand out like a sore thumb. I moved to Ireland by myself 21 years ago and plan to retire somewhere in the Mediterranean. It has been life changing and so empowering. Let me know if you ever come to Dublin and want to say hi! Keep doing what you’re doing….it will keep you young and strong and beautiful!

This was so helpful. As a rule I am comfortable being alone but solo travel has been a little intimidating. I just retired and was looking forward to traveling with my husband of 38 years. Sadly, he passed away unexpectedly in July. Realistically, I will need to travel solo since as you said there won't always be someone to travel with. I've always been independent so I do believe I can do this but it is definitely out of my comfort zone. Thanks for sharing your experiences!

i absolutely agree with everything in this wonderful video. i have solo travelled to 2 locations (florida and South Korea) and plan on doing more.
as a woman, i feel we are taught to wait for others/do things with others and let others make decisions for us. so once i started traveling solo, i felt extremely empowered. i researched, planned and paid for my own trip all on my own. if i had waited for people to come with me, i would not have gone to south korea at all and would have missed a once in a lifetime opportunity.
i started small, traveling within the US where i’m from (to florida) for a short 4 day weekend to eat at restaurants and sit at the beach. take myself parasailing and go to an aquarium and feed flamingoes.
then i traveled to south korea to see BTS (won a ticket to see them) and explore the country. i didn’t know the language but i chose south kore bc it was rated as one of the safer places for solo female travel, they recently had the olympics there which meant that there would be more major things in english. as a big international city, they have long had english signs for the things you need - train, street signs, airports, major malls. most people know very basic english and if not are very helpful otherwise. in the hanok village, there are “red angels” who wear read and help direct tourists to the village and hand out maps and of course speak english.
    what helped me:
    - watch 4k street walking videos (for south korea there are youtubers like seoul walker who film a couple of hours just walking around town. this helped me feel like the destination wasn’t so scary and foreign to me, and you can get an idea of what street, metro and traffic signs look like)
    - know the addresses of everywhere you’re going (download a waze like app. for south korea, they use naver and it gives you all the details to get right to the front door even on foot!)
    - get an international wall outlet port and get a long 6’ cord. every country,s outlet is different and they’re affordable on amazon. make sure yours is sturdy bc you don’t know if the socket is in the wall on flat on the ground
    - have the phone number and address for your country,s embassy nearest to your hotel. they can help you in emergencies, that’s what they’re there for
    - absolutely agree, walk with purpose. hagglers and stranger dangers won’t bother as much as someone who looks like an easy target
please don’t feel embarrassed about traveling alone. like taylor said, it’s more a reflection of yourself than what other people are thinking. i always applaud people doing their own thing, and people are too busy in their own world to notice if you’re eating by yourself. if you spend all your time waiting for others to join you, you’ll end up missing your opportunity (i have one too many times and now i travel and do most things myself for the freedom of choice and empowerment). if i waited for someone to join me in south korea (especially covid happening a few months after my trip, effectively shutting down the country), i wouldn’t have been able to overlook the seoul7017 bridge at midnight and marvel how i got here all by myself.
safe travels all! the world is beautiful, go explore!

I've solo travelled a few times and I have to say I did feel very awkward eating out alone at first, but it was totally the opposite. Most wait staff love solo people, easy to serve and usually tip well. Loved being able to read my book waiting for the food to come out 😊 I'm an introvert with chronic health issues as well so I loved being able to just go back to the hotel and chill if I was too tired or in pain

  • @allih8021

I did a nearly four week cross-country road trip by myself for my 40th birthday and it was the best gift I ever gave myself. I'm trying to plan a second one in the next year or two to hit the parts of the country that I didn't have time to see (or even drive through) on my first trip. I'm planning a spring trip by myself - no idea where I'm going at this point, but I'm going! Can't wait. 😀 I love to see you taking this journey and encouraging others to explore too! ❤
The Google tips were super important on my trip too - I drove through some very desolate areas and so I had to plan well in advance where to stop for gas and stuff so I never ran out in the desert or something, and it helped my friends and family feel better that they could look at their Google maps and see where I was at any given time, and I felt better knowing that if something ever happened, people would know where to look for me.

To build on the benefits, and tied to what you shared on independence: It's a great way to build on your own sovereignty and sense of self. Learning how to be alone gives you that space to learn who you really are, what's important to you, and who you want to be as a person. Women are taught to be dependent on men and scared of solo travel. Also, many people (not just women) are afraid to be alone. Usually that means there are unresolved things that we're afraid to sit with. That's so understandable and normal- and is robbing us of true fulfillment and happiness.

  • @jojomarch

I've travelled alone many times, and I loved this! My favourite tip of yours is to do food tours, I remember this from a vlog a while back and it's going to be my new travelling alone staple!
Another good thing about hostels is they can offer up to date advice on great tours/places to go and safety tips. As a white tourist I've encountered a couple of tourist tricks in a couple of places I've been. These aren't necessarily dangerous, but can make you feel unsafe, so it's good to be aware of them. For example in Bangkok I was told by a Tuk Tuk driver that a certain temple was closed, and he drove to another one much further away that I didn't know of, but didn't say this at the start (and it was untrue).
I feel it's also important to acknowledge that safety across the world isn't the same for everyone, including all women. Women of colour, women who identify as trans or non-binary and queer women are not safe everywhere in the same way white women are.

Taylor, I have done solo travelling since 2013 and have created travel documentaries based on my experiences, different villages and people's way of living even if it's in the mountainous region.
I cant tell you how proud I am to see how you are blossoming into your authentic self. I can see how lighter the way you carry yourself, as if a lot of burden have been lifted off your shoulder. I am cheering for you and your dreams. I feel at home when I am on the road and at times not many people understood what I meant. Now that traveling is more normalized, traveling alone as a women is a lot easier :-) Lots of love!

I do a lot of solo travel for my business (about 1 week every 6-8 weeks).

Oh please! You probably came here with a victim mentality or scared already. I came to Us from Puerto Rico in 1990 and this country is great. It has certain areas that aren’t so good JUST like ANY other country. Don’t come or live here if you don’t feel safe… 👋

I took a solo trip to Spain earlier this year and I loved it! Honestly the best thing I did for myself at the time. I like my own company so I didn't feel lonely at all, it was so freeing to be away from home and to choose exactly what I wanted to do. Of the people I told I was going solo, so many wished they were able to do it and I just say go for it. Don't hold yourself back.

I’ve done a bunch of solo travel in Europe, Asia, and most recently Mexico City. I absolutely love it and I agree with everything you said. Also I noticed as a solo traveler a bunch of people would randomly start talking to me when I’m checking out a restaurant or a bar by myself, and I get adopted into local or other traveling groups. It’s amazing!

My first solo trip was a road trip from Phoenix to San Francisco. It was the BEST trip I've ever taken because I was by myself. I did anything and everything I wanted to do. It was so empowering! Learning to be on your own in general opens so many doors and opportunities. My next solo trip is to Tennessee in a few months. Nothing is holding me back from seeing the world 😌

I LOVE solo travel. I'm American and I've spent the last 2 months wandering around the UK. Before that I road tripped around the southern US for a month. It took me until I was in my mid 30s to get the courage to travel alone and now I'm addicted.

Love this topic for those of us who are single and don’t have many friends to travel with. Sometimes you just have to go it alone. I solo travel quite a bit and it can be lonely. The key for me is to plan out my days ahead of time, make sure I stay in relatively safe areas, and go in after dinner. Thanks for these tips! Looking forward to my next trip ♥️

I also have been solo traveling since my 20s I'm in my late 50s now. Your right I would never have seen the places I've seen if I waited to travel with others. People have always been amazed that I travel to locations that don't have the best reputation. They have been my best trips. I have met some great friends that I probably would have never met otherwise. Love watching your videos Taylor. Keep traveling

Esp the safety tips because safety is one of the reason I am afraid of traveling solo.

As another female solo traveler, I agree with every one of your safety tips. For someone with less tech savvy family members (ie. who don’t use smart phones), I always did a daily check-in email. It could be a longer description of what I did that day, or if I was tired, it might be shorter, but I never missed a daily check-in, and my parents were a little less worried while I was away.
I also liked to try to study maps beforehand, in street view where possible, to familiarize myself more with where I was staying, routes to and from public transit stops, etc.
Edit: that tip about going into a bathroom stall to figure things out if you’re lost really works and has made me feel more secure.

I have a narc mom and she thinks it’s so weird that I want to travel alone. She’ll even be like “who gave you this idea?! Because you can’t do that!” I’m like go take it up with this TH-camr named Taylor idk she says it’s fine 🤷🏻‍♀️😂 (to be fair, I do not give a crap what my mom thinks. I haven’t in years. This is just an example of how there are people out there who think it’s weird so I understand why people would be nervous about what others think.) I’m going to be 30 though, and I am finally in this place of confidence. I only have one life to live so I’m going to live it how I want it!

Solo travel is one of my favorite things. It is so freeing and so humbling. I’ve been to Budapest, Tallinn, Krakow, Edinburgh, and Riga alone. It’s amazing. I’ve NEVER felt unsafe. I’m more scared walking my dog alone in Tampa where I live.

I wanted to say you inspired both my husband and I to do Nomad living (since we both work remote). It's been fun exploring places in the US, and your advice for trusted housesitters is fantastic. We've already booked one which will save us a ton of money, plus caring for a cute little dog isn't the worst thing in the world. I love the new direction your channel is taking (tbh makeup videos can get a little bit old due to the oversaturation of the market). And I love how realistic you are with budgeting (even though you are an influencer) when you travel.

Good tips, Taylor. I've used basically all of them in the past. Another one I always do is to lock my luggage up before I leave the place I'm staying for the day. You never know who has access to your room, especially if you carry nice or expensive luggage and wear branded goods.

Excellent tips for people who've never travelled by themselves, and I agree with everything you said!
I often had to travel by myself to my work destinations around the world in my 20's, and if you follow your tips (which are what I did), you can't go wrong!
Always keep yourself safe, and be aware of your surroundings, and you'll be fine.
I'd say to anyone to travel while you're young and unattached if you can. It teaches you SO much about life to visit other countries and cultures, and it's loads of fun! I lived/worked abroad for 6 years, and wouldn't change it for the world! Just go out and do it! 💖💖🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿
