Thank you so much for taking us along in your explorations. I remember reading about how women would use crayon to color fabric during the Depression years of the 1930's. I've never tried this technique, but now I may very well give it a go!
Tanks for watcing Sue, I'm glad you enjoyed it, and how interesting that people used crayons on fabric during the Depression - necessity is the mother of invention as they say. I love the flour sack fabrics they used as well, we didn't have that here, they look wonderful :)
Love this Annie lovely results. Learned this as a child we used old pieces of bed sheets and did rubbings off the flagstones then stitched. I was lucky to have had a very creative mother and grandpa with lots of patience. Cheap and easy way of adding colour and texture to fabrics and paper endless possibilities. x 💐
Thanks Jen and what a lovely memory - funny enough I was thinking about flagstones yesterday, in fact I've been looking for textures everywhere since doing this! As you say, SO many possibilities :) xo
Oh Helen you won't be able to stop once you start, especially if you have embossing folders to place with. It's only occurred to me today that I could make words from diecut letters and take rubbings from those, or any other diecuts come to that - if you have embossing folders maybe you have dies as well. oooooh excited squeak I have even more ideas to play with now. Have fun and please do share some pics of your experiments, I'd love to see :)
Thank you Kerry, it's a very fun and easy process, honestly it was hard to stop!! Might experiment with an artsy version of the idea next, what do you think? :)
Really lovely Annie. I have been playing with crayons on fabric the past few weeks, lots of fun, your piece turned out beautifully, thanks for sharing💖💖
Thanks so much Maria 😊I have so many more ideas to try with this - are you in our Discord or Facebook group? I'd love to see some pics of your creations :)
Great video Annie, and shows that with just a plain piece of fabric and a few crayons you can create something colourful and interesting to add your own individual stitching to.
Interesting you should do one of these videos, because I was, recently, watching someone else use crayons on fabric to create shapes to then slow stitch around and it really peeked my interest. Your idea of using texture plates, embossing folders and stencils opens up a whole new world of possibilities. I will definitely be having a go. I really like your colour swatches and look forward to seeing the wonderful stitchery swaps you will create from them :)
Thanks Susan - yes I've seen people drawing some lovely images to quilt around, there's such a lot of scope in this technique, I have some more experimenting to do for sure. I'm on the second square using the pieces I made in this video, it's really fun to just take your thread for a walk around the different patterns and follow the colours which are already there, no real thought needed but very absorbing, which is perfect for me! :)
This looks great Annie - I’ve just recently bought myself a set of crayons for this very purpose having watched a few people try it :). Amazing strip! ❤
Oooh Annie! Yes, I must get my birdy lino cut out, and the one Jess did with one eye too! Next step is to raid the girls' crayon tin (aka old Roses tin). As soon as I have finished today's Christmas trees I will be on the case!
Glad you liked it!! It was very easy and satisfying to do, took me right back to doing rubbings with crayons on huge sheets of newsprint when I was little - I'm looking at textures everywhere now, wondering how they would work as rubbings :)
This was very interesting. Who would've thunk that crayons would work so well? 😉 So inventive! I especially like the paisley design with the orange and magenta next the blue. A good contrast. This experiment was fun to watch, Annie. Thank you for sharing! Love and Bless xoxo
What a fun idea!!! I really love how it's coming out with the stitching in it too. I don't have that many embossing folders but like you said, there's probably other things you can use. I know I have a few texture plates meant for clay that I never used on clay that would work well. I love your sense of adventure trying new things!
Please do Rose, and I'd love to see some pics of your creations, I think there are so many possibilities and each person will do something different with the idea I'm sure :)
Howdy, Annie! Thought I'd pop by and see what you've been up to! Sorry it's been so long. I love this idea of using the crayons on fabric for slow stitching... I think I might give it a go. Your patterns turned out lovely and the stitching really adds some pizazz! Stay Creative! Bubbles...ooo🫧🫧🫧
Hey Patty, lovely to see you! Thanks so much! 😊 I will pop over and see what you've been up to later as well, it's been ages hasn't it? We're busy busy busy eh?! Yes this was a really fun and easy technique, although the stitching took quite a while. I'd really love to see what you do with it :) xo
Wow seriously such a fab wonderful idea! Aww I so want to try this. Right must finish me squares I’ve got a little painting to do ( up to three people with the art swap) . I love the paisley design so special. Love how you use what you have and repurpose the craft tools. Thanks for a relaxing fun watch.
Thanks Paula, I'm really happy you like the idea, I think we can have loads of fun with it and it is always nice to find a different use for stuff you have already. I bet you'll do something amazing with it - we just need more time for all these ideas eh? :)
So very nice! Other folks have stated that there is a soy oil based and a wax based crayon. The wax based like Crayola's seem to work better. I wonder if wax based color pencils would work? I enjoy that we, your fans who are crazy about you, can actually feel your enthusiasm and giddiness thru your voice, even when your sweet face is not on camera. Sending good wishes from south Texas. 💜
Aw thank you so much, that's really sweet of you to say, I'm blushing now! :) Aha yes that makes sense, I haven't tried it with other crayons, might try it with some ancient oil pastels I have stashed away as I think the colours would be more vibrant. I'm sure it would be worth a try with wax-based coloured pencils, surely they'd work in a similar way. I think if it's for things that aren't going to be wash and especially if you're not worried about lightfastness or longevity, then any way of adding colour to fabric that doesn't make it difficult to stitch into is work trying out. I love using Inktense pencils on fabric, they work beautifully (you can just let them do their thing, or use Aloe Vera Gel instead of water to activate them for more control). Oh I just love how we all inspire each other and share ideas, it makes me very happy xo
Oh Annie, what are you doing to me. Between you and Kool Kooky Kreatures, I’m being sent down so many Rabbit holes that I’m not sure what to do next. Haven’t used stencils or embossing folders for a while so it will be good to try those again. I love what you’ve done with your squares. Must find some crayons and give it a go. Xx
Sorry not sorry Maggie hehe - so much of this idea came from being inspired by your beautiful work, I think we're all leading each other down those rabbit holes, a world-wide network of amazing rabbit holes, isn't it wonderful?! :D
hehe - there are so many possibilities with this Jacquie, I@m sure you'll do amazing things with it. Just occurred to me that I could make words with die-cut letters and use those for rubbings... ooooh !!
I would say this would be a perfect way to use old stumps of crayons Judy - apparently Crayola crayons are made of paraffin wax and colour pigment, so I can't guarantee that it will work as well with crayons made of other materials, such as soy wax, or less pigmented ones. I would say just experiment on scraps of fabric - use cotton so you can set the iron temperature high and just try it. If it's for slow-stitched pieces that are purely decorative and aren't going to be washed I can't see that you can go too far wrong quite honestly. Please do share some pics if you have a go, I'd love to see them - links to the FB group and Discord community in the description box if you haven't joined already :)

I love this idea. Crayons ordered! They are so cheap it’s definitely worth a go and I don’t get out my embossing folder stash often enough! 😊
