    Ugh. Thank you! "Monetizing the friendship." I'm a new-ish mom of an almost two year old and have struggled a ton with loneliness and depression. I finally started thinking about joining a mom's group one of my FB friends shared about... But then I started getting messages from her about her business and asking if I wanted to host a "party" for her. Suddenly I didn't want to go to the group I could've really benefited from, out of fear that I'd be pressured everytime to join the company. And it felt so gross because she started the messages by feigning interest in how me and my son were. Way to add to my feeling that people don't genuinely care at all...

    • @theyoutubecommentepidemic5528

      Please hang in there. You will find people who don't want to monetize friendship. Still, I'm sorry you had those bad experiences. That lady was predatory and scummy. I hope you never have to deal with any more people like her.
      Good people will genuinely care about you, I promise. That horrible woman didn't care because she wasn't a good person. However, compassionate people will truly want to be there for you. Do your best to keep your head up until you find your true friends. I believe that you will. I'm quite proud of you for your ability to power through your loneliness and depression and take good care of your two year old.
      Remember you're strong enough to make it through this. I wish you nothing but the best, and I hope you're staying safe during this quarantine.

    My girlfriend had a professor during her masters that used "Onward!" as his sign-off....he was a great man and included me in the community of their masters program and his attitude towards life really resonated with me. It kind of became his thing and was a saying that stuck with me and others as a way of looking forward and pushing on. He tragically passed away just last year right before he was about to retire. I have been using his sign-off as a sign of respect and to keep his tradition going ever since.

    Hey Link, if you keep picking up after your kids they'll never do it themselves. The simple solution is this: Figure out a consequence for them that logically follows. For example if they don't put the used towel in the laundry, they now have a dirty towel located on the floor to dry off with next time. When they want to use the sink next they'll have to take the underwear out of it themselves. Assuming Christy is doing their laundry, don't do it unless they've put all their dirty laundry where it belongs, & letting them wear dirty clothes is not ok, so the choice will become go out naked because they'll run out of clean clothes, or make sure their clothes are getting washed, & mom will only wash them if they pick up their own dirty laundry. You do have to put expectations on them, since you're the parent, & it's easier when they're younger. I'm a therapist btw, I have parents ask how to handle those things all the time, usually once the kids are already teenagers & really don't want to change their habits.😄 Barbara Coloroso wrote lots of self help for parents books on this subject.

    • @pokelover02
      @pokelover02 5 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      I agree with this. I keep telling my mom not to pick up after me and make my bed if she wants me to do it myself, but she says she gets annoyed and does it anyway. Of course I'll never do it myself if she keeps doing it for me. And while Link's video is funny for me to watch, I would be annoyed if I were his kid. It's really passive aggressive. Sounds like he just needs to communicate with them and kindly explain the importance of maintaining good habits while also not cleaning up after their mess and letting them do that themselves.

    It’s not a pyramid scheme, it’s multi level marketing, and the levels just happen to be in the shape of a triangle, and triangles aren’t pyramids, so it’s all very legal and “reputable” 🤔🧐🤯

    • @poeticeclipse
      @poeticeclipse 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Something that is legal and "reputable" isn't necessarily morally just and sound. There can still be an "ick" factor to it. MLMs can still open the door for destruction of relationships. MLMs can still drive people into debt (usually more debt than they are in when they get started) and seriously cause stress on the person involved, as well as their family.

    As a bio major I just had to confirm that the pink residue you would see in your shower is normal. Pink/orange mold feeds off the soap residue in your shower! Also I think link isn’t impeding on his kids space. Maybe it’s just how I was raised by I see it as, his house, his rules (within reason). You wouldn’t leave dirty underwear in your friends sink! I just think it’s about cleanliness and them learning to clean up after them selves.

You were allowed to hold as much as you wanted, so I had bricks in my bookbag and had a friend on my back. I think I ended up getting over $100 back.

    This is the greatest thing ever. I have been a part of to MLM schemes and it is crazy to think back on it. I sold Cutco knives and I also did Primerica insurance. I remember they pressured us into bothering all of our friends and family to southern a bunch of crap they didn't need and I always felt horrible that goes putting them through some sort of idea that they didn't want to be a part of but I had to do it in order to make any money. I made no money at all with Primerica and I think I may be made $1000 in total for Cutco because this lady felt bad and bought a huge knife set from me. I will never get dragged into that world. I was absolutely dying laughing when link was talking about being held hostage at a at a "dinner party," and he felt like he was about to die of starvation. Literal tears of laughter because I can relate so well.😆😂🤣😭 This whole thing could be a stand-up comedy bit.

    Sound advice about how to set boundaries with a friend trying to recruit you into an MLM. Just be honest and direct. I am part of an MLM and I’ve seen all sides of it. I appreciate you guys approaching this in a diplomatic manner. You don’t need any business skills or marketing education to start an MLM biz, so naturally lots of people are going to get it wrong. You absolutely can be successful without recruiting your friends and being shady. This girl’s friend just hasn’t figured out a good way yet. She might not realize the implications of how she’s going about things. Patiently educating her on how you feel could inspire her to reform her methods.

    Right away, Rhett says that MLMs and Pyramid Schemes are not the same thing. They are. Look at the shape of any MLM system, it's a pyramid. You're conflating "legal" pyramid schemes with things like Ponzi schemes which are well known to be very illegal. Just because a pyramid scheme is "legal" doesn't mean it's not a pyramid scheme. It depends on how much revenue the company gets from the outside vs. how much they get from their "partners," if they pass a certain threshold, it becomes an illegal pyramid scheme. This is why many MLMs like LuLaRoe have had to completely restructure their businesses; they got caught by the gov't in an illegal pyramid scheme.
    By going easy on MLMs just because you know some of your viewers are in some, you're doing everyone else a disservice.

I totally see this happening though. I will say it can be very misleading and the average mlm consultant makes almost nothing and very few of them actually move up to leadership or to a point where they are actually making a decent income.

    I don't even understand MLM companies in the age of the internet. Everything the MLM was trying to solve for is no longer necessary to be a successful company. You don't need sales people going door to door to push product and you don't need a physical store front to sell merchandise...just buy a domain and set up an online store? You don't even need to work hard to find your audience (through single point of contact sales) online ads are so deliriously simple to target certain people/demographics/behaviors a monkey could set up a successful online ad campaign! If your product is useful and needed (it's not that's why you have to use an MLM to sell it) then people will purchase it. We don't need the majority of the absolute shit these MLMs are pushing and it's why MLMs are all duplicitous and gross.

    Having worked for MLMs, it is just another business structure with strengths and weaknesses. _If_ everyone acted honestly and with integrity, the MLM develops good life skills and a clear success-oriented promotion structure.
    That all said, the MLM is especially prone to the worst aspects of human nature. Even if the boss isn't promoting shady techniques, the pressure to compete makes people cut corners. I left because I set boundaries that created a cap to my success. The experience also did help me get my current "legit" sales engineer position.

    Do the kids still leave stuff all over the place, and leave stuff open?
    My dad used to growl and I would kill myself laughing, and couldn't take him seriously; but with you I think it shows your displeasure, and frustration. Whenever I grunt at the kids they eventually stop playing with my face; I always reinforce with a hug afterwords or doing something fun.
    I worry about people getting sucked into MLMs (thank you for correcting that for me), especially when it involves friendships. Like what happens if you trust someone with your merchandise, do a down payment for them to produce and sell for you, then things go down hill and that other person still has all of that money?
    I just can't imagine the dynamics. But I'm no economist, or business person.
    There are a lot of good products out there though from credible sources (like SLMD skincare, Sandra's a doctor).
