- The Toyota vs Jeep debate will never die and it's a lot of fun. But what happens when a die hard Toyota owner buys a Jeep Wrangler Rubicon? We take two new Wrangler Rubicon owners to Hot Springs Offroad Park to test their new Jeeps and see what happens. Now a Toyota owner has 3 Jeep Badge of Honor Badges.

I’ve always been a Toyota guy, but recently was considering a Gladiator build until pricing one out. It’s probably the coolest platform to build with on the market, but at 20k more than a Toyota. And mine would be 600lbs heavier than something like what you have, and I haven’t seen enough on how a the gladiators do when they are super heavy and on trails week after week. I know guys like @down2mob have had their frames welded on to deal with the weight.
If the Gladiator and Tacoma were in the same price range I’d give a jeep a try for a few years. I know the lower end models can be had for cheaper but it would be a Rubicon or nothing for me. Jeeps are certainly impressive on trails.
th-cam.com/video/N_zMB1eygKA/w-d-xo.html checkout this build from expedition overland.
If you do take the dive, get the diesel rubicon. Makes all the difference in the world.
Came from a 2014 tundra on 35s to a eco diesel gladiator rubicon. I’m used to the long wheelbase but love the 20+ mpg of the diesel
We put about 500 miles on and offroad on the JK 37" 4.88 this weekend and averaged 16.2 I was very happy
I would say charging the obstacle may not be the top idea. But fun to watch. "your gonna need bigger skid plates" Man... that is a stock Jeep. Never hit anything that hard. Use the winch!
I just traded my 2017 4Runner (3" lift on 33" Nitto Ridge Grapplers) for a 2019 JLRU on 37" KM3's with 10k miles!! Love it so far. Can't wait for some snow melt (I'm in Colorado and trails are about 2-3 ft. deep right now lol.)
Was there 2 weeks ago. Great park. Powerwagon trail has that one hole that sucks you in and the only way up is winching out of it.
Jeep’s are awesome. They are very well built and equipped.. It tells you your exact tire pressure, oil pressure and other important things that Honda vehicles don’t .
Robert… congratulations. Glad to see you have upgraded.
I sold my moded 4runner to get a jlurXR. solid Axle is 👑
I’ve had my gladiator for 2.5 years and absolutely love it….it’s a beast. New subscriber.
No. No rusty frames like Toyota’s either!
Funny, I just picked up my JTR that I ordered and the other vehicle getting picked up (in MT) was a Tuscadero Pink JLR Recon. That is an awesome color. I'm usually not interested in factory upgrade packages, but I wish the JT had a Recon package, that's pretty comparable to what you can do aftermarket, but without shortcuts that most of us would take.
cara. 4.56s are great. lift 2 1/2 with a 1 1/4 body pucks. lots of roaming room. i rubbed on the big tree on the rito you did but skids kept it rollling smooth.
Thanks!!!
I was a longtime Toyota Tacoma off roader. I had a 1997 access cab 4x4 and then a 2007 Tacoma TRD Off Road access cab and both were really great. I was getting ready to order a 2021 Tacoma TRD Off Road Pro but wanted the most capable off road vehicle straight from the factory. I had also always wanted a Jeep before but had never owned one though. So I ordered a 2021 JL Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon and fell in love with it. My only hate is the eTorque and engine stop/start. Right after I ordered my Jeep they announced the 392 and then the Extreme Recon package and so now I’m seriously mulling over the idea of trading in my 1 year old JLUR and ordering one of those instead.
I did the exact same thing! I actually love my E-torque!
Nice trails. Was in Hot Springs last summer and loved the area. If we go back definitely going to find these trails
What is impressive to me everytime is, to see how easy the long Gladiator walks over the obstacles compared to the shorter wheelbased Wranglers. Happy with mine too…
It has its weakness as well but it’s by far the best overland vehicle.
I originally wanted a Gladiator for the bed but thought it was too long. Had no idea it could wheel like a beast! Ohhh well…
Depending on what obstacles you take them on.
I've had both jeep and toyota. I thinkk I will be sticking with my 4runner for a long time. I haven't really found anything I don't like about it. It may not be SFA but it's no slouch. Great video :)
Plus I don't feel like a heavy monthly payment, Just can't do it these days.
Typically with sheared gears it’ll make horrible noises and at least try a little to move. A broken shaft makes perfect sense since the open diff’s torque is set by the weakest output which is nothing. Should have ran the locker to get it to power the other shaft.
Looks like a great time was had! Hate we had to miss it.
Unbolt all of the plastic bumpers, add some high clearance stuff and go!
working on it.
Robert was always my favorite cause of how he rocks with the 4runner.
Agreed. I'm glad he didn't get rid of it. Just added another option to his garage.
Just got my 2022 2 door wrangler Rubicon with manual on Feb 7!!!
I got. 2021 2dr Rubicon! Love it!
Lucky you I ordered my Jeep November 5th 2021, as of March 11th...still waiting!
@@jeepinintheburgh4137 I ordered mine on October 11, and they didn't start production until Dec 16, what did u order?
@@sherri082772 4 door sport altitude. I just went to my dealership a few days ago and they said the holdup was the heated seats for the winter package. But being from Pittsburgh and having our nice cold northeast winters, I am not about to own a car that I can’t turn on from my warm house and have a warm seat for my fanny! Good news is they said the seat issues have been resolved and they can’t see it being too much longer.
@@jeepinintheburgh4137 that's good, I have the seated seats and heated steering wheel, it comes in handy on those winter days
Oh my! My husband & I live in Hot Springs!! It would be awesome if we could meet up!
It’s a good thing y’all didn’t go the weekend before…it was nice and slick in the snow!
High wheel spin always, then instant stop (force) always = Broken shaft or ??? Great video, but that guy is too throttle happy. If that's the way he rolls, then he needs tons front and rear with 39's or 40's. But great content. I used to have fun and poke fun at people breaking, but that detracts from the trip and the fun when you have to work on the trail. Thankfully he was able to keep rolling in front wheel drive (simulated). Lol. Our 44's in the JLUR's are tough, but still have a shear limit if folks are going to spin them hard.
I like that park. Arkansas a little too far for quick trip from Georgia, but I'm going to plan a trip their for sure. I always get concerned with video's longer than 15 minutes, but I like how much you covered. Motivated me to want to try that place out. Good job.
welcome to the free world of solid axels robbert. cant wait to see how you build it out.
@23 minutes is a good example of how a RTT can be a slight hinderance due to CG being elevated. Excellent video shooting and editing keep up the great work.
Thanks!!
I’ve seen very old Toyota pickup trucks on the mountains in central America and Africa as well 22r Engine, maybe the new models aren’t as good as the old ones.
Sesame Street is always a challenge if there is any moisture. I have been avoiding the offroad parks lately, but I need an upgrade on the JK rear axle so might as well go put the old parts to the test. I enjoyed the video another enjoyable offroad adventure.
In your opinion, which has better overall traction, the Gladiator or Wrangler?
I went from a Toyota 4Runner to a 2018 Jeep JLU … 4 years later & best decision on a vehicle. Love my Jeep & will not be going back to the anemic powertrain & horrid seating of a Toyota. People spewing the “superior quality”
narrative are living in the past; the gap among major brands is so close as to be luck of the draw.
100% agree!!!
@@OzarkOverlandAdventures "Superior quality" is the only argument toyofans can currently argue, but it's like arguing that the evolution of mankind is a fact, even though it needs to be proven by claiming that it took millions of years, so it cannot be proven. The problem for toyofans is that wherever authoritative experts test a Jeep against a Toyota, the Jeep always wins.

This is a summary of what a Jeep can do and what a Toyota can do.
Greetings from Costa Rica.
@@waltermeono5253 Exactly - well stated.
@@waltermeono5253 lmao way to bring religion into a jeep vid. Good lord, cant we just enjoy the vehicles brother?
@@Cptkirk1315 Imao... it's not religion, it's science, elementary science. Cause and effect applied to the nonsense said by toyofans... lol.
Was so happy to see the Pearl out on the dirt road :)
Just got home and I'm about to sit and watch this 😁😎
thank you for keeping America economy moving. Mechanics gotta eat too.
That Tuscadero Pink looks more like Snazzberry in the video.
It definitely is a color changer. I love it!
I just watched 38 minutes of good wheeling👍😄😃. But I was really hoping for your or your wife's Jeep vs Toyota comparison based on the title. I am a current Toyota owner and always have been but I have a lot of jeep friends. You should make a video about the two companies and how they compare.
Man this two last videos were awesome 👏🏻 congrats!!! Love your videos !! 🤙🏻
About how much ground clearance do you have with the 37's?
oh woof on that driveshaft brother. my goodness.
We seen tons of deer last July on Rubicon ridge mostly mommas with fawns and yearlings. Also lots of trash panda mommas with kits. Pretty cool I was able to only get a few pics of some of the deer.
If you wanted to use winches yall pass impossible it's at the entrance of Rubicon ridge. Last summer it was a 6 diamond trail LOL
that new mxt 500 is crisp and clean
His 4Runner is still an absolute BEAST tho.
Agreed
Good music in this video Matt.
Jeep is the best! Hello from Russia. Джип самый лучший! Привет из России!
Awesome video! What Antenan mount do you have the the 3db ghost antenna that is mounted on your light bar. Thanks for your help
You guys prolly know but just letting you know that one time I knocked the rear end back so far one time it pulled th he drive shaft out the. Transmission. So be careful running up on them rocks real hard
I received a badge for the Jeep Adventure Academy, and have the app for the different badge trails, but if I complete one, how do I go about being recognized and receiving the badge?
It’s all in the Jeep badge of honor app. If you check in, you have to also request a badge.
Oh dang you never want to see somebody break something, also this video perfectly illustrates the need for lockers with that maroon JL struggling
I want a jeep as a daily transport and for winter snow here in KY. No rock climbing for me. I want a Willys with manual shift.(your thoughts)
Great video....Do you think John was.a Bit aggressive on some obstacles?
Are these new Rubicons stock from the show room? Under armor, lift kits, etc... Thanks!
The two new ones are completely stock. the Xtreme Recon package includes 35" tires and a 1.5" lift among other things.
I like that orv park in Hot Springs. Be there pretty soon. Recommending some chromoly Driveshaft in all 4 corners.
last weekend me and my wife took our stock 2014 grand cherokee limited off road and we went to hot springs and had a blast
we stayed on the 1 and 2 diamond trails and i learned that the cherokee is a lot more capable then i am
hot springs is a 3hour drive for me so we will be going back some time soon but i want to put the 2 inch lift on it and skid plates because we scraped a few times no damage though
it sounds like you all are some where in Arkansas do you all go to the ORV park a lot because we would like to find a group to go with next time
Sounds awesome!! We are in Arkansas but only go to the off road park a few times a year.
Does Robert and Cara have the same model JL Rubicon?
I noticed they both have an extra skirt on the fender flares
Yes. They are the same. Both Rubicon Xtreme Recons.
I as wondering what motor is in Robert an Cara's jeeps? I bought my 2021 recon in Oct and its got the 3.6 etorque. I had a 2018 Sahara with the 3.6 an 6 speed , an the new one feels like it has way more power. And I notice their tail lights are a little different .
3.6. Same that's in my Gladiator.
I have the 3.6 etorque in mine. Yes it seems to have more power than John’s 2018 Jlu but we will see when I put 37’s if there is a real difference.
Great vid…!!! New subscriber from Down Under…!!! 👍😊
Question: When new rigs under warranty break on the trail, is it covered under warranty?
Depends on what breaks and why.
@@OzarkOverlandAdventures - specific to this video....sounded like gears broke somewhere in the front driveline. Covered? What is something that would be or wouldn't be covered that broke while off-roading?
What kind of phone mount your guys use please give us the name or link description
Bulletpoint Mounting Solutions. They are great!!
I got my Badland Apex for $480 synthetic winch with 20% coupon at HF.
Great video! 👍🏻
So whats wrong with the drive shaft? Is it discombobulated because of lift or you were talking about rear wheel drive shaft? In your lift video comments you mentioned possibility of upgrading front drove shaft way back when.
It's the front. 3" lift and crazy articulation are not good for the factory front drive shaft. lol
How can we get to go along with you guys ?
I’ve been watching your channel for a while now and enjoy the Ozarks content. I grew up near the lake of the ozarks. I have a badlands bronco coming in a couple of weeks supposedly. I am considering a trip into Arkansas and the Ozark’s national forest for one of my first trips. It will be on factory 33’s. Any suggestions for suitable trails in that area? Any thoughts you have would be appreciated!
Anyone else hear that song and think a Dave Ramsey podcast episode was ending?
😂😂😂
Keep on being yourself. You have a video good enough for a few thousand views so I'm sure more than a few are jealous.
Man that's awesome I live less than 4 miles away from that park the wife an I would have loved to have met yall even a chance to trail ride let me know if yall are still around hot springs
While I can't wait to go on a trip with you guys with mine, I will be taking any and all bypasses without complaint.....lol
I’m so happy for Cara and her Pink Jeep! That thing is too cool! 💙
Thank you!!!!
What's going on with that front drive shaft brother? Love the video!
3" lift and lots of flex is not kind to the factory front drive shaft. LOL.
Are y’all using amateur radio? I hear what sounds like courtesy tones on a ham radio repeater.
We use Midland GMRS radios
Once again a great video I've been wanting to get out to that place it's only 4 MI from the house but I've never been
What kind of Radios are making that beeping sound??
We all run Midland Micromobile GMRS radios.
Love the flex on those Mile stars .. how do you like the road handling ?
they handle great on road. They just wear fast on pavement.
We run the 315/70R17 on my wife’s JKU and we are very pleased with how they ride on road. It’s my next tire for my TJ when it’s time to replace.
you guys did a nice off road trip but I will never use my $70,000 for it.
KEEP UP THE TOYOTA ROBERT!! #TEAMYOTER
I will...4runner got a good cleaning and is running better than ever...I plan to wheel it quite often in the future. I am also working on my old Taco. Bumpers/winch/lockers/gears and 35's.
What off-road park is this ?
Hot Springs Off Road Park
You've popped up on my recommendeds. I'm going to sub. Your trails remind me of my trails in PA. Same mountains, different state. I run a '13 Power Wagon on 37x13.5 Toyos. My son has a '05 LJ with Rusty's long arm 3" and 35s. Love your video / editing style.
Thanks so much!!!
Is power wagon point still a deep hole that swallows 38s lol
Yep. That’s where my friend broke.
That TJ was struggling not because it is a TJ, but because it is an X (base) trim TJ with fully inflated tires. It doesn't even have a limited slip differential. A Rubicon TJ, even Unlocked, would have had no trouble whatsoever.
When unlocked the Rubicon is the same as the sport (minus the transfer case)
@@OzarkOverlandAdventures the X model TJ doesn't have limited slip differential and doesn't have the 4.10 gears. Instead it has open differentials and the 3.07 gears. Big difference when offroadin. Struggling at that incline doesn't have to do with it being a swb. That swb becomes an issue in bigger inclines over 30 to 35 degrees, not because of grab, but because it can roll back.
@@matadorprime a locking diff, when unlocked, is just an open diff. The Rubicon does not have limited slip when the locker isn’t on.
@@OzarkOverlandAdventures the TJ Rubicon, has both a LSD in the rear in addition to the lockers.
I think we are deviating from the reason of my comment. In your video you say, I'm paraphrasing, "this may be a fine example of the difference between swb on a hill climb and a lwb." I'm trying to point out it is not that simple. That TJ is the X model without LSD, the 4.10 gears, or the 4:1 ratio in transfer case. That makes a big difference on hill climbs. Other factors include: it's on street tires, the tires are highly inflated, and sounds like it has a manual transmission. The driver seems to have some experience, so I don't think that was a factor in this case,
@@matadorprime obviously there is more to it than just wheelbase. It was just commentary in the video not a whole breakdown on long vs short wheelbase and pros and cons of each. Sheesh!
Love 💕 my pink rubicon 😊
YESSSSSSS
I think you are losing me. This is your channel and clearly what you are doing is finding you success (based on the “new spendy toy of the month” cadence). For me, I miss the homegrown feel that used to be this channel. If y’all rip on 4Runners, I can only imagine the shade I would get for my 2002 Xterra. :/ No hate being thrown here at all. I wish you all the success in the world with your creative endeavors. :) Safe travels!
I hate to hear that but understand. Everything we have been doing is to get ready to hit the road full time in 3 years. It allows us to get things paid off before that big change happens and have newer reliable vehicles for that life stage. And we love 4Runners. I told Robert I didn't want him to get a Jeep. lol. They all have their pros and cons.
@@OzarkOverlandAdventures i am looking forward to following your full time adventures. Thanks for the reply :)
Don't worry we kid each other about our rides all the time. The 4runner might be a little more tippy but it makes for good video. You can't beat the functionality of the 4runner. I'm having to rethink my "over land" set up with this new jeep. For the record...I had to wait three days before I could pick up the new Jeep because it had a faulty sensor in the passenger seat from factory :/. All the rigs that Matt has as "guest" on his channel are very capable machines. Thay have to be. The trails they run are pretty intense. They may make fun of each other's rides as friends often pick on each other but the truth is we all love the variety. I was messing with Ben on this trip because he has yet to hook up his lockers, and yet he still made it through a lot of tough obstacles (38's help :)) I love Ryan's 4th gen 4runner (I'm jealous of his V8) and Obviously Nick's 5th gen (same model as mine) I hope they can make some trips in the near future. please know that we are all friends and love everybody's rigs. Sorry if it came across as harsh.
Our budget can’t handle another spendy thing. 😂😂😂 This shall be what you see!
@@frenchie4wd lol!
Waiting on my wife’s tuscadero 392 to arrive.
Aww Robert... I'll miss your 4Runner. I like watching a variety of vehicles on the trail. The best videos have had 4-5 different 4x4's. Fun to watch diversity. This seems to be turning into a Jeep only channel. Too bad.
Watch tonight’s video. Robert’s 4 Runner is back.
Don’t be upset Ben. They are $50,000 plus in the hole. I’ll winch all day long for the difference.
You're not wrong. 😂
Ozark Overland Jeep Adventures. Hey man look Toyota's are great at some things and jeeps are good at others like rock crawling. I have to daily my Tacoma so 35's are out. 2 inch lift and 33's do well for trail riding and gong to work so I do what I have to do. I like all of them, Jeeps, Land Cruiser, what ever you have. . Just messing with you on the Jeep Adventures thing.
Unpopular fact, the Ford Raptor can be a great rock crawler/overlander. I would like to see one it there with them
We saw the Raptor this past weekend and would love to have it out. It was beautiful!
Whip out the Varla!
I love my Xtreme Recon Tuscadero! Glad to see you showcase your wife’s!

Cool video! I think he's sold on the Jeep. Lol
Not gonna lie, I will miss seeing the 4 runner over time.. 😢 lol
