Tie a loop in a short section of white nylon rope, tie your mainline or leader to the loop, fray the end opposite the loop (no hook necessary)and cast anywhere you see gar on top. When you twitch that rope, it comes to life in the water and they cant stand it. Hard to explain (or believe) till you try it/see it, but their teeth get tangled in the rope and its nearly impossible for them to get off. An old timer showed me this and i can swear by it.
Btw, and more important, watching you fish with your boys is almost as much fun as fishing. Super intense, yet patient at the same time, an incredible balance! From one dad to another, it blesses my soul. More parenting like this is what this world needs!
Great job boys and dad, I was one of the jet skiers that day and was a pleasure to meet you at the dock. You have a great channel with how to's, rigging and bait set ups. Thank you and get after it!!!!
Hey man, I think I live just up the ICW from you in Swansboro. Thanks for this video, we catch these guys occasionally up the White Oak and my son and I have talked about eating one for a long time. Well, we got a nice one after that last tropical storm that came through and cleaned it, a real pain, but it was actually fantastic. See you out there buddy, save some Sheepies and Black Drum for me!
Y'all need to look into the rope lures for gar fishing. I like to make a smaller version of the rope lures and use them with a hook and bait. I only use very small tremble hooks or small circle hooks. But the frayed nylon ends of the rope easily tangles and holds in their teeth. Yes they work a little too good and you either have to cut the gar off of your line and put them on ice, or take a little time with gloves, ( which you should always use when handling gar fish.), and a good pair of needle nose pliers. It'll take a little longer to untangle from the gars teeth but it's a surefire way to catch them much more consistently without a lot of misses.
Really enjoyed that and pulls at my heart strings remembering taking my boys fishing and watching them dig into some fried fish. btw- I've admired that stainless steel table. Do you remember where you got it?
Man I gar fished for several years, my buddies thought I was crazy until they hooked a 4ft long gar and there arms were about to fall off..the gar is an awesome fish to catch..
My friend, that was fun to watch. Great job with the boys...

Never done this myself but I’ve seen Richard gene the fishing machine do it over on his channel and it definitely worked for him.

These are memories those kids will cherish forever.
Another great day on the water with your future fisherman. Love it.
That was just awesome !! What a day with your sons. Congrats. Was fun to watch.
Love seeing the kids with you. The older guy is turning into a great fisherman like his dad.
Well done dad, those boys are great fishermen and having a ball!

I like catching and eating Gar. Easy to filet.
try an angle grinder with a cutoff wheel to get thru the skin/armor plate.
This is what's it's all about Teaching Our Kids to Fish .. Way better than letting them playing on a phone or a laptop .. Good Parent MB.
btw, lil tip for Gar is to fillet the bluegills No Bones then put it on the treble hook ..
@@MegaBait1616Thanks for the tip, such a fun fish to catch. Definitely going to try for them again.
