Elias Pettersson is one of the most dynamic young centremen in the NHL. He's having a terrific year offensively for the Vancouver Canucks.. however, it has gotten lost in the drama that has surrounded the team this season.
In this video, we break down exactly how Pettersson strikes fear into opposing teams with offensive play.. and how he leverages his skill set to create offence.

He is very unique. Notice when he takes penalty shots or are on breakaways how close he gets to the goalie and most often bumps into them but scores, since most goalies expect a player to avoid them because it can result in a save they don't anticipate someone crossing that line and still scores, it's like Pettersson don't care about the rest of his body, as long as he has a hand or two on his stick he will try to go through whatever he has planned the puck to do, similar to soccer players they try to foresee openings and opportunities and be one step ahead, but the crazy part is that Pettersson are very well aware that he can actually score when he sees such opportunities, just as an example in the past two games when he and Miller have made three goals shorthanded, if you look at Pettersson before he has received the puck, or even when he just stepped onto the ice, he is casually observing and planning what to do if he gets the puck to score a goal, and lo and behold he finally gets the puck and they score, lol. I think that the shorthanded goals are a prime example of nothing getting in the way of Petterssons mind to score a goal if he sees an opportunity to do so, he is as cold as ice, very sneaky and tricky, he tries his best to think outside of the box, literally lol.

Petey is definitely an elite franchise defining talent his ability to know where to be at the right times shows his hockey IQ is on if the best his ability to make anyone on his line a threat means his play making ability is elite as well as his one timers his wrists his snap and slap shot are up there with the elite snipers in the NHL his defensive abilities make his two way game something teams need to be aware of and the fact that he's carrying a defensively ineffective team on his back is just another reason that Elias Pettersson will be the face of the Canucks for the foreseeable future as long as the don't give the money for his contract renewal to someone like Anthony Beauvillier like they did to bo Horvat

Peterson is probably 2nd or 3rd most desired center today. Skills on offence and defence, age… who wouldn’t you give up on center to have him? McDavid (obviously), but do you give up a Draisaitl or MacKinnon? Maybe not Matthews, but probably at least one of those guys.
Hughes is close except he doesn’t have the defensive game, and only one monster year, but otherwise is younger and has a great contract. Everyone else you’d glad give up for him. Except Bedard! But that’s sort of a technicality.

All these pundits - and there were quite a few of them - who were predicting that Petey was too slight of frame to be an impact player in the NHL have long ago shut the hell up. My question to them would be " Hello...did you all have amnesia? You didn't recall that Wayne Gretzky - the greatest player in NHL history - had an almost identical build to Pettersson? " Gretzky's career weight was 175lbs - same as Pettersson, with only a 1 inch height difference. Not only does Petey have the same wiry build as Gretzky did, but he plays the same style of head-up, panoramic view. I expect Pettersson to have more injuries than Gretzky did only because he plays a more physical game - Gretzky was a master of hit-avoidance, and I wouldn't mind if Pettersson practiced a little more of that.

If you watch him in 60 or more games this year like I have then you wouldn't even consider another player for the award this year. You also didn't mention how much stronger he is this year than he has been in the past. He has taken a great deal of pride in his reverse hits and looks for them every chance he gets.
