Finally, a performance that lives up to Strauss. Wonderful musical dialogue and acting buy the soloists and orchestra. After much heated dialogue and romance the bassoon wonderfully sobers up just in time and the third movement unisons tell all!

Brilliant. Brimming with energy and playfulness.

Wonderful characterful expressive bassoon playing, brings out duet like quality of dialogue.
It is said to have been inspired by Hans Christian Andersen’ stale « Swineherd » involving a metamorphosis from lowly disguised brute into a noble Prince worthy of a Princess…
Comic touches to the bassoon’s opening passages that border on deliberately clumsy dissonance
Later this metamorphosises into rapturously urbane lyricism.
This bassoonist has a sense of operatic aria lyricism that makes his character’s courtship soar to great heights.
Extraordinary when he becomes principal voice, rousing the clarinet into a viola like rôle, in contrast to the opening movement.
He takes liberties, and plays with his entire body.
    True dialogue.
    A revelation.
    Sensationally beautiful clarinet playing
Magnificent sound, freely interactive, osmosis, complicity.
    A quasi improvised quality.
Perhaps the « live » quality contributes to the liveliness of this version.
Personally, I rate it as amongst the very best.
One of Richard Strauss very final composition two years after the end of WWII where his signature inventiveness is encapsulated with such quintessential economy.
