Jack the railfan you’re correct. With these sets, realism is usually sacrificed for lower prices and features that make the trains more fun. It’s an interesting observation!

Cameron Springman, that is not recommended. The smoke unit is designed for smoke fluid only, as the heating element gets to a temperature made only to evaporate this kind of substance. Water will only get absorbed by the wick, and likely damage the smoke unit. Lionel recommends using Lionel branded smoke fluid, but products like JT MegaSteam and ProtoSmoke will also work.
The set comes with a wall-pack power supply, which plugs into a terminal track to provide power. You will need some kind of track power though, or else things won’t go very far!
In the US, this does not come with a UK adapter. It’s certainly possible that authorized Lionel dealers in the UK may have a UK adapter/connector, though. I’d double check this from whichever vendor that you decide to purchase from.

Rachel Genthner sorry to hear you were having issues. Getting the app on iPad is a little unconventional. Essentially you’ll need to do this: Pull up the App Store on your iPad, and then tap the search toggle in the bottom right-hand corner. After getting the search field, I have found what it best is to simply search for “Lionel” and not “Lionel LionChief”. Once you search for “Lionel”, you’ll then need to tap the “filter” button in the top-left corner. By default, this should be set to iPad Only, but for this app we’ll need to temporarily choose iPhone Only. Once you tap iPhone only, the Lionel LionChief app should pop up in the search results and it can then be downloaded on to your iPad. Make sure not to forget to set your filter back to iPad Only once you’re done!
J Rad Man, a few thoughts - If your engine is still pairing with the remote, the engines ability to revive a bluetooth connection should be fine. In this scenario, it’s likely that the LionChief app may need to be updated, or reinstalled. I did notice that an update through the App Store came out within the last week, so I’d definitely check that out. Now, if your engine isn’t pairing with the app AND the remote, it’s likely that there could be an issue with the engine/tender in this case.

The red light on the back of the observation car does not light up, sadly.
