Very lovely present, thanx for no corny jokes or music, just serene project. I was thinking I would try with heating pad and keep it in a styrofoam chest
because my house in North Central FL not heated except space heaters and it can get pretty cold pretty quick. Great idea and your yogurt looks beautiful.

    Ingenious. Thanks for sharing!
Technically, the important temperature to monitor is that of the dairy culture, right? There could be a slight difference in temperature between the surrounding water and what's inside the bowl.....Still, I like the creativity in finding something on hand to accomplish the task.
I would give it a try as soon as I can get some l. reuteri to begin my culture.

I only measure the water temperature. I leave the dairy covered the entire 36 hours.
I hope you enjoy the benefits!

Should just put "Heating Pad L. Reuteri Yogurt" instead

Is it normal that its sour?

Mine normally has a sour taste, like yogurt. Although my very 1st batch did not. I add a probiotic tablet or 2 when it has lost the taste.

@NaturesOvercast thanks. This is my first attempt and it tasted bad. Almost like milk gone bad.

No worries. Mine had a cheesy flavor. I went ahead and used it to make another batch. It was much better. It's normal for the 1st batch to curdle.

If you have no L. reuteri 'yogurt' use 10 Bio Gaia tablets (crushed) as your starter
