  • Many stories have been told about the glory years of the Indian national football team. But none of them are as famous, or as untrue, as the 1950 World Cup story. Why didn't the Indian team play at the 1950 World Cup? Was it because they played barefoot football, or was it something else? Together with Budweiser India, we're telling the story of the World Cup match that didn't happen.

Dr. T Ao from Nagaland was the lad who captained the Indian team in the Olympics. His famous quote, "we play football, not boot ball". He was offered a contract from Arsenal FC however due to his medical studies he had to reject the offer.

Football was huge back then. Almost all of the youth used to play football back then. There are many interesting stories that my father and my uncle told us. Of them one goes like this : The chief of the banned ULFA, Mr. Paresh Baruah was a tremendous goalkeeper. He used to play for the Indian Railways. During one game, while playing for the Railway at Katihar, Bihar, he saved an almost impossible goal but he hit the goal post in the process fractured ome of his shoulder. He was rushed to the hospital. The locals were so impressed by his performance that the hospital was soon packed with locals who came to cheer for him and wish him luck seeing his performance at the game. It was during these trips that he saw how the government neglected the state of assam as compared to the other sates despite being rich in resources like oil and coal. This very difference made him and his likes to demand an independent Assam.

This is actually quite informative and helps me makes sense of something that always puzzled me (why more South African Indians love football than cricket). I'm a South African Indian, descended from the Indentured Labourers who came to South Africa in 1860. We Indians in S.A. are actually more passionate about football than cricket (most of us anyways). So it makes sense that at around the time my ancestors left India, football was bigger than cricket and that love for football continued down the generations. It's also widely played amongst Indians here, a lot more than cricket is.

Football in India has always been popular, some may typecast it as a regional sport coz of it's huge popularity in the North eastern states, West Bengal, Goa and Kerala, and some may point the poor state of the AIFF and not so modern football infrastructure. However my friends, we were world beaters in Hockey, the world knew our identity as the Kings of Hockey and we could beat any team in the world and once a legend Late Major Dyan chand bought the mighty Hitler's jaw drop with his skillful play. And then there are people who compare a game Cricket with an emotion i.e. "FOOTBALL". Cricket is an english game, a team game but not an active team game, a game which was made popular by the elite English when they were ruling our country, an unfortunately that game is still ruling out country, but the next generation is more fascinated by Football and I'm sure, the rise of Indian football will happen soon, as we are now a regular participants of the AFC Asian Cup, and we've been dominating in South Asia region, surely good times are not far for Indian Football fans. And us hosting the next year's Hockey world cup, by god winning that would certainly change a lot of things in Indian Sporting culture. Felllas, its high time now, the world has truly become global, and to be the part of the global sporting culture we need to perform in global sporting events.

India has realistic chance of qualifying in 2030 if we continually make progress and invest in grassroots..
2026 world cup los Angeles will have 48 teams . So 8.5 spots for Asia.
Optimistic target for india for 2026 is to
Play in round 3 fifa 2026 qualifiers and rub shoulders with big teams of Asia.
And with that experience we can seriously prepare for 2030 ..
But looking at current setup and situation
I think football fans in India will be happy to beat teams like Bangladesh ,Nepal , srilanka and Afghanistan regularly .

Out of all the field sports that mankind has produced so far football is the one which is most popular now and the number of countries that are trying their best to even qualify for fifa wc is just staggering and ever growing. Even country like China who has dominated in specific sports at Olympics could not produce world class football team that can compete in fifa wc, that's how hard it is now.

India can only dream of qualifying for fifa wc, but being consistent is totally different thing. We still have a long way to go i think we have lost our track and on the other hand many other countries have caught up with the time and pace of new age football. I feel that we can qualify for the WC in the next 30 years, now when FIFA has decided to increase the number of teams & growing infrastructure + interest. But other countries have also planned way ahead looking at how Japan, morocco, Croatia and other low ranked teams performed against giants this also makes our dream of playing football a distant one. But I hope for the best.

They just go on the pitch to win somehow, but are absolutely clueless about the game. As if they are out of their minds.
But just to let people know that you know about football, or you have been playing at a certain level, just to prove yourself more knowledgeable, doesn't make sense. You don't have to brag about yourself, or the kind of football you play.
Even us Indians can do that, even in football, about which the Westerners and the Europeans think that we don't know anything about.
