I saw the movie when it first came out. I was 19 at the time and just starting to take college classes in both Anthropology and History. Also because of movies like this and the Mountain men with Charlton Heston and Brian Keith, I got into black powder shooting with my first rifle being a .50 cal hawken replica.

A Great Film, taken from an excellent example of an American Pioneer, who lived Life the way He had too.
I remember very clearly, how it was talked about, after it's release in 1972. Mr Robert Redford, did one Helluva Job on that Film! An Will Greer was also Excellent. Thanks for the opportunity and the inside Story.

Along with Barbarossa one of the few movies I liked enough to buy when it first came out on VHS! I worked at a video store part time in the 80's for something to do. Occasionally I would have customers who didn't know what they wanted to see. I would recommend Barbarossa and Jeremiah Johnson if they were interested in action/Adventure/western and Somewhere in Time if they were interested in a Romance/Sci-Fi . Each time I rented either movie I told them if they didn't like the movie to bring it back and I would pay for it...I never had to pay for either movie.

Agreed, this is my favorite movie(tied with Shane, which I find very similar in the theme of title character destined to be alone) I have seen this movie so many times, after years of not watching it, I can still quote each line, from beginning to end. I believe this was Redford's best. Just found out T Tucker was in it so had to search TH-cam to see her...thank you for creating this info piece.

His first duty was to his family. Instead, he gave in to pressure and betrayed his people by desecrating their holy ground. Shame on him! He failed both his family and his people.
And yet, rather than admitting his errors, he went on to multiply them 100 fold!
